Chapter 74 - War of Faith: Part 4

The false god moved.

Its body was shaped like a man, but hollow, as if carved from light itself. Symbols of prayer crawled across its surface like veins. Each step it took made the shrine creak, as if the building itself were afraid of what it had created.

Hiroto's shadow twisted violently.

…Break… it…

"Don't let it touch you!" Yui shouted.

The High Preacher spread his arms. "Behold the power of united belief!"

The false god raised its hand.

Light poured from its palm.

Hiroto barely had time to react. The shadow surged up and formed a wall, but the blast still sent him skidding across the wooden floor. The shrine cracked under the impact.

Goro charged, blade raised.

He leaped and was thrown aside by an invisible force before he could reach it.

Akari moved next.

Her spear flashed red as she hurled it.

The weapon pierced straight through the false god's chest.

For a moment, it seemed to work.

Then the light inside its body closed around the spear and absorbed it.

Akari's eyes widened. "It's feeding on belief… and power."

The High Preacher stepped back calmly. "Every prayer strengthens it. Every doubt weakens it. That is the law of faith."

Outside, the chanting grew louder.

The believers had begun to pray.

The false god's body expanded, growing taller, brighter.

Hiroto forced himself to his feet.

"So you built a god out of fear," he said. "What happens when fear runs out?"

The High Preacher smiled. "It never does."

The false god swung its arm.

The floor split open.

Yui fell backward, barely avoiding the collapsing boards.

"Hiroto!" she screamed.

The shadow poured from him like ink, forming long blades that wrapped around the creature's arm.

The light burned against the darkness.

Steam rose where they touched.

For the first time, the false god staggered.

Akari grabbed her spear as it was pushed out of the creature's chest and landed beside Hiroto. "It reacts to your shadow."

"Because it's chained to belief," Hiroto said. "And my shadow hates chains."

The High Preacher's smile finally faded.

"Kill them," he ordered.

The soldiers rushed in.

Goro met them head-on, steel clashing against holy staffs.

Yui pulled civilians away from the shrine doors. "Get out! Now!"

Some ran.

Some stayed, praying harder.

And every prayer made the false god stronger.

Hiroto stepped forward.

The shadow wrapped around his body like armor.

"I won't fight your god," he said.

"I'll fight your faith."

He drove his hand into the false god's chest.

Darkness spread like a crack through glass.

The false god screamed.

Not with a voice but with thousands of human prayers tearing apart at once.

The High Preacher stumbled back. "Impossible…"

Outside, bells rang wildly.

The shrine began to collapse.

Akari grabbed Hiroto's arm. "If it breaks completely, the city will fall with it!"

Goro shouted, "Then we get out now!"

Hiroto hesitated.

Inside the false god, he felt something else.

Not belief.

A presence.

Watching.

Waiting.

…Deeper war…

The shadow whispered.

The false god shattered.

Light exploded upward like a dying star.

And the City of Radiance began to burn.

To be continued…
