Chapter 73 - War of Faith: Part 3

The army of white moved like a slow tide.

From the gates of the City of Radiance, rows of robed figures marched in perfect lines. Between them walked men in armor painted with the Divine Path symbol, carrying long spears and banners that fluttered in the cold wind.

Their chanting reached the ridge.

Not loud.

Not angry.

Calm.

Unified.

"Faith is the road."

"Light is the guide."

"Obedience is peace."

Yui's hands trembled. "They don't sound like soldiers…"

"They sound like believers," Goro replied. "Which is worse."

Lady Akari stepped forward, her crimson cloak snapping behind her. "They won't attack yet."

Hiroto glanced at her. "How do you know?"

"Because they want you alive."

The chanting stopped.

A single priest walked ahead of the formation. He wore layered white robes and carried a staff shaped like a cross between a spear and a torch.

"The shadow-bearer!" he called. "Step forward!"

Hiroto felt every eye turn toward him.

"I'm here," he said.

The priest smiled serenely. "You stand against the Path. That means you still walk in darkness."

Goro snarled. "Says the man hiding behind an army."

The priest ignored him. "Our High Preacher wishes to meet you."

Yui whispered, "That's a trap."

Akari nodded. "Of course it is."

Hiroto's shadow stirred.

"I'll go," Hiroto said.

Goro grabbed his arm. "Alone?"

"No," Hiroto said, glancing at Akari. "With allies."

Akari lifted her spear. "I was hoping you'd say that."

They approached the army slowly.

The believers did not move. Their faces were calm. Some even smiled.

The priest gestured toward the city. "Come. Witness the truth."

As they passed through the lines, Hiroto felt something pull at his shadow like invisible threads trying to bind it.

The shadow recoiled.

Inside the city, the air was warm.

Too warm.

Candles burned in every window. White cloth covered broken walls. Bells hung from ropes across streets.

And at the center stood the shrine.

Up close, it was massive.

Wood layered over stone.

Metal bands holding it together like a cage.

Light pulsed from within.

Hiroto's head throbbed.

"This place…" Yui whispered. "It feels like it's breathing."

The priest bowed. "Behold. The heart of faith."

The doors opened.

Inside, a man stood on a raised platform.

Tall.

Wrapped in white and gold.

His hair was silver despite his young face.

"The shadow-bearer arrives," he said warmly. "Welcome."

Akari stiffened. "High Preacher."

The man smiled at her. "Lady Tsukihana. Still fighting inevitability?"

"I fight lies," she replied.

He turned to Hiroto. "You carry something ancient. Something that should not exist in a godless world."

Hiroto stared back. "And you carry people's fear and call it light."

The High Preacher laughed softly. "Fear is the seed of faith."

He raised his hand.

The shrine glowed brighter.

The air twisted.

From the light, a shape began to form.

Not a god.

But something wearing the outline of one.

A hollow figure made of prayer and stolen divine residue.

Yui covered her mouth. "You built… a fake god…"

"No," the High Preacher said. "We built a future."

The thing opened empty eyes.

Hiroto's shadow screamed inside him.

…Chain-breaker…

The High Preacher stepped closer. "Join us, shadow-bearer. Become our proof. Or become our enemy."

Akari raised her spear. "He already chose."

Soldiers rushed in.

Believers cried out.

The false god took a step forward.

And the war of faith truly began.

To be continued…
