Chapter 31 - Chapter 31: The Tag Duel Against the Twins (Part 2)

[Yako & Mako: 3700]

[Yutaka & Mai: 2200]

"My turn! Draw! I activate the spell card that I just drew! Machine Conversion Factory!"

[Machine Conversion Factory] [SPELL]

[SPELL CARD / FIELD]

[All the Machine-Type monster in the field will increase their ATK and DEF by 300 points.]

"Now, the attack points of our monster will increase by another 300 points!"

[VWXYZ-Dragon Catapult Cannon]

[ATK 3000 → 3300]

The empty field started to change and took on the hue of a factory with molten metal and constantly hammering conveyor belts and chains to build some kind of robot.

Invigorated by the familiar environment, the VWXYZ-Dragon Catapult Cannon also got stronger.

"Next, I will discard the last card in my hand to activate its effect, which allows me to banish one card from the field! I choose that card!"

The card that was set was revealed to be the Grave Arm, which Mai had set last turn.

[Grave Arm] [SPELL]

[SPELL CARD]

[Destroy 1 monster on the field.]

Originally, this was a card that Mai kept in her side deck for uncontrollable situations like the one just now, but she would never main deck it.

However, seeing that Yuta used an even worse version of this card, Tribute to the Doomed, Mai changed her mind and thought there must be merits to this that she was not aware of.

If Yuta could hear her thoughts, he would claim slander. How could Tribute to the Doomed be a worse version of this card!?

Do you even understand the concept of stacking cards in the graveyard?

It was basically a second hand!

If not for discard cards like Graceful Charity and Tribute to the Doomed, how could Yuta easily play cards like Bacon Saver, Witch of the Black Forest or even Sangan!?

Wait...

Witch of the Black Forest + Sangan?

Wasn't there a fusion of these monsters?

Something like Sanwitch?

From what Yuta remembered, it was a vanilla joke fusion because both of its fusion monsters were banned, but Sanwitch itself was playable.

Maybe he could take an opportunity to summon it someday and see if he could print a bs effect for it.

Anyways, these were all matters for the future, so back to the duel.

"Next, I will be attacking your Amazoness Swords Woman! Go! Hyper Dragon Cannon!"

Once again white light started to gather at VWXYZ's dragon head and started to fly towards the Swordswoman.

However, Amazoness Swords Woman did not know the immensity of the heaven and earth.

Looking at the upcoming beam, she was thinking to herself that she could dodge it!

The thought itself was almost as absurd as a certain blond special agent working at OSI thinking that he could dodge a point-blank tank shot.

And the result proved to be the same as well, as the mid-dodge Amazoness Swords Woman was blown to smithereens.

"I activate the effect of Amazoness Swords Woman! My opponent bears all the damage I would have otherwise taken from battles involving this card!"

[Yako & Mako: 3700 → 1900]

"Kuh, this effect will not change the outcome of the duel! Your monster is still destroyed! I end my turn!" Yako said in impotent rage.

"My turn! Draw!" Looking at the gust of wind accompanying his draw, Yuta became excited. When he turned the card over, he was delighted to the extreme.

It was Graceful Charity!

"I activate the spell card! Graceful Charity to draw three more cards!"

First draw, Black Witch!

Second draw, Pot of Greed!

Third draw, Time Machine!

"I discard Lycanthrope and Witch of the Black Forest from my hand! Black Witch's effect activates, and I add Kuriboh to my hand!"

With this life-saving Illusive 4th Egyptian God Card in his hand, Yuta finally felt a little secure.

After all, despite having the card advantage, he truly could not deal with the opponent's VWXYZ-Dragon Catapult Cannon.

It had high attack power, a banish ability that rendered their trap cards almost useless, immunity to spell cards, and a disgusting ability to disengage and dodge attacks.

So the formula for defeating the VWXYZ-Dragon Catapult Cannon was first to put it under pressure, whether it be from attacking with a higher-point monster or trap card, and then to force it to disengage and use another trap card or monster attack.

So he needed a way to defeat it at least twice in one turn.

But the question was how?

After all, traps were unreliable, as no matter how many you put on the back row, there was always a possibility of them being targeted by the opponent.

As for monsters?

The highest potential monster he had was Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon, but it did not have the ability to attack twice, not to mention the fact that it was a two-card combo.

*Roar*

The Red-Eyes replied from the deck, saying to trust it.

Well...

"I activate Pot of Greed, which lets me draw two more cards!"

As soon as he touched the first card and felt the heat emanating from it, Yuta knew which card it was.

First draw, Red-Eyes Black Dragon!

It was time for this dragon to make its dazzling entrance and save the beauty *– ahem,* help its master get out of the predicament.

Second draw, Metalmorph!

Looking at the cards he drew Yuta was 99% sure that Red-Eyes Black Dragon must have played a hand in it.

He was just saying Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon had the highest potential to defeat the opponent, and now suddenly he drew both cards.

If someone said it had nothing to do with this, no one would believe it.

Anyway, who cares?

Even if this might be considered cheating IRL, it was called 'heart of the cards' in this world.

Do you even know what 'heart of the cards' means?

Then, the next step was to summon...

"Now, I will summon one of my ace monsters!" Yuta declared as he took one of his cards and forcefully held it up above his head.

"Is it coming?" Both Mai and Tristan thought to themselves. They were both eager to see the appearance of the legendary dragon and how it manages to turn this duel around.

"What is it!?" Both twins suddenly looked worried, looking at the reactions of the other two.

"I summon Fencing Fire Ferret in the defence position!"

"What!?" X 4

Mai almost fell off the platform.

Where was the promised Red-Eyes Black Dragon!?

"What? Did you expect something else?" Yuta said mischievously.

Why would he play Red-Eyes Black Dragon in this situation?

Just to get banished?

Even for Metalmorph, he needed to set it a turn beforehand, so there was no way he was playing it this turn.

"This is one of your ace monsters? This little ferret?" Yako asked while laughing; it was wrong of him to expect something else from this white-haired guy. Honestly, Yako did not even understand why Master Pegasus was paying attention to somebody like him. Even the woman next to him played better than him in this duel.

First turn, he just summoned a weak monster like Baby Dragon.

Second turn, it was a little better as he summoned that blue fiend Zoa, but it was nothing in front of their combined strength. Then he set two useless cards and ended his turn.

And this turn, he also summoned a weak little monster and did nothing.

This guy was really not worthy of the attention Master Pegasus was giving him.

"I wouldn't be so sure about that; appearances can be deceiving, you know? Anyway, I set down two cards and end my turn!" Yuta ended his turn without any burden.

After all, even though these two had superb monsters ahead of this era, their minds were still stuck in the ways of this era.

Even by thinking with his toes, Yuta could tell that they valued the ATK points of VWXYZ rather than its unreasonable effect.

"Yuta, is this alright?" Tristan couldn't help but ask from the sidelines.

From his perspective, the duel was not heading in a good direction, and Yuta seemed too passive in this duel, not showing the dominance he had in his previous duels.

Could it be possible that it was because he was still sick?

It shouldn't be!

When they left this morning, Yuta looked completely fine.

But it was also true that he seemed to be not playing his best in this duel.

"What Tristan asked is precisely what I wanted to ask Yutaka Minami! Why are you playing like this?" Mai also voiced her doubts at this moment. Unlike Yuta, who looked easygoing, she was practically betting her entire future on this tournament. So his attitude started to get on her nerves.

"Whatever do you mean? Haven't I been playing like I always have?" Yuta looked confused. This time, he was not even throwing the duel intentionally; the opponent had a broken deck, and that was all. So why were they ganging up on him?

"How could you!?" Mai punched the platform in front of her in fury.

Looking at his expression, Mai could tell that he did not even know what he did wrong.

But how could that be possible?

Where were his signature monsters and combos?

Even for trap cards, it was always her trap cards that were targeted by the opponent, but despite that, he still did not play his cards.

Now that she thought about it, this guy had even intentionally sabotaged her trap card by making her monster make a suicide attack.

Was he trying to get eliminated here?

"Huh, look, brother, in front of our invincible tactics, they can't do anything. Now they even started to fight among themselves." Mako had a schadenfreude smile on her face.

This feeling of them hating the twins but not being able to do anything to them was exhilarating.

"My turn! Draw!" Seeing that the duo did not intend on stopping any time soon, Mako started her turn.

"You just wait! We will talk about this once I win this duel!" Mai said furiously and turned back to the arena. She didn't even have any hope in Yuta anymore. It was better to focus on this duel and win by herself.

After all, she was THE Mai Valentine! How could she leave her fate in the hands of others?

At first, she was considering leaving this monster to Yuta to deal with, but now that she thought about it again, this was wrong.

As a strong duellist, her first thought should have been to think of a way to defeat this monstrosity instead of trying to leave it to him.

So what if it could split in two and was immune to spells?

Didn't her deck still have trap cards?

Didn't she still have effect monsters?

Didn't she have spell cards that can boost a monster's ATK points?

She had all these things, but once she saw this monster, her first thought was to leave it to Yuta to deal with.

She had even lost the basic fighting instinct of a duellist.

When she was like that, how could she think about winning the championship?

Or was it that she already considered herself beneath him?

And that was the reason she wanted to rely on him to solve the problems?

She refused to accept this!

She was going to prove to herself that she was still the best by winning this duel alone!

Looking at Mai, who was suddenly 'fired up', in a literal sense, Yuta did not know what to say.

What was going on?

Wasn't it the norm that the duels in this era went on for like twenty to thirty turns?

Why was everyone suddenly against him just because he played a little slowly this time?

His new deck was still breaking in okay?

He was still in that awkward stage where his deck was neither here nor there, so what if he took it a little slow this time?

He did not have to go for an OTK each time, okay?

He also liked the feeling of going blow for blow with an opponent.

There was no need to treat him like this because of that, okay?

"I activate VWXYZ-Dragon Catapult Cannon's effect and choose one of the set cards on the field! Then discard the card I just drew!" Mako shouted as he commanded her big robot.

The card she chose was one of the cards Yuta said in his second turn, Ancient Lamp.

[Ancient Lamp] [TRAP]

[TRAP CARD]

[Ancient Lamp reflects all attacks.]

"Tch." Seeing that Yuta had an expression like he swallowed a fly.

This card was one of the combo pieces that he envisioned using to finish the duel with Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon, so now he could only go with plan B, Yuta thought to himself as he looked at the second card he set during his second turn.

"Then I activate my monster's second effect to turn your little ferret into the attack position!"

Fire Ferret immediately took an attack position without any qualms.

It already knew its job was to be beaten up and set the field for its big boss.

"Now! I attack! Go! Hyper Beam Cannon!"

VWXYZ-Dragon Catapult Cannon once again destroyed a monster with its thick light beam.

As soon as his ferret was destroyed, Yuta activated its ability.

"Fencing Fire Ferret's ability activates! When destroyed by battle, it can destroy one of my opponent's monsters and deal 500 damage!"

From the smoke of the explosion, Fencing Fire Ferret suddenly jumped out and attacked the VWXYZ-Dragon Catapult Cannon with its serrated sword tail!

"VWXYZ-Dragon Catapult Cannon disengage!" Mako hastily ordered her monster to separate so that it could escape from the fate of destruction.

This truly had caught her off guard.

Who could tell that such a sweet little ferret would have such an insidious ability?

[Yutaka & Mai: 2200 → 600]

As the ferret attacked, the giant robot split into two, dodging this unexpected attack. So the little ferret fell off the stage with an unwilling expression.

However, this was not the end just yet!

"Then I activate my set trap card and turn back the time of the duel! Come back! One of my beloved ace monsters! Fencing Fire Ferret!"

As Yuta shouted, a black capsule shot out of the ground and opened its doors. Steam covered the field, and among the steam, Fencing Fire Ferret stepped out of the black capsule.

This ferret was here to stay! And it then proceeded to give off a mighty roar!

However, to others, it just sounded like

*Kyuuuuun*

"With this, I end my turn!" Mako continued to look fearfully at the Duel Arena, knowing that if she was even a second too slow, their precious card would already be in the grave.

Mai took a deep breath before drawing her next card. She didn't have any cards left in her hand, and their life points were like a candle in the wind, a measly 600 points. If she wanted to win, she needed to believe in the heart of the cards and draw the most perfect one for the situation.

Yuta: Sister, you already set up enough flags; just draw your card already!

"My turn! Draw!"

As a gust of wind accompanied her draw Mai looked at the card and was relieved; her deck had not disappointed him.

"I activate Card of Sanctity! Every player in the game draws until they have 6 cards in their hands!" Mai declared as she showed her card and then played it on the board.

Yuta's eyes, once again in this duel, almost popped out of their sockets.

You say what now?

If you had such an OP card, why didn't you say it before?

If he had known she had such a broken card, Yuta would have taken it in a heartbeat compared to Harpie's Feather Duster.

Everyone drew their cards; Yuta regretted only being able to draw just three cards, unlike the other three, who at least drew five cards each.

First draw! Graceful Charity! Nice.

Second draw! Monster Reborn! Another combo puzzle piece for plan b!

Third draw! Threatening Roar! ... Well, better than nothing, I guess.

"Next! I summon the favourite pet of my beloved Harpies!"

[Harpie's Pet Dragon] [WIND]

[LV: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ]

[DRAGON / EFFECT]

[2000 ATK / 2500 DEF]

"Its effect activates; my dragon gains 300 ATK points for each Harpie on the field!"

[Harpie's Pet Dragon]

[ATK 2000 → 2300]

"So what? It is still weaker compared to our monsters!" Yako said stubbornly, not afraid that she would make another suicide attack on their monster.

"Who said I was done!? I activate my set card! Sword of the Deep-Seated and boost its attack points for another 500 points!"

As Mai activated her set card, a big purple sword materialised in the pet dragon's mouth, creating a comical image, but no one was laughing, so he decided to keep a serious expression.

Also Sword of Deep-Seated?

Did Mai really play this pit of a card in her deck?

Doesn't she know that this card is the biggest bane for players that rely on destiny drawings like her?

Oh, Yuta was the one that actually convinced her that this was a good card?

Never mind then!

[Harpie's Pet Dragon]

[ATK 2300 → 2800]

"Now, my pet dragon! Destroy her VW-Tiger Catapult! Fearsome Fire Slash!"

The sword in the pet dragon's mouth was suddenly covered in flames, and then it took to the skies before diving and slashing the VW-Tiger Catapult in half!

"Naive! VW-Tiger Catapult merge with XYZ-Dragon Cannon! Union!" Mako commanded her monsters to merge back again. Honestly, it was a breeze to remember, as it was a once-per-turn effect. She did not understand how anyone who made it to this island could forget such a basic rule...

Joey: I believe you are dissing me, but I have no evidence...

Suddenly Mai's proud expression froze on her face; in her haste she had actually forgotten this monster had such a hateful ability...

"I end my turn..." Mai said dejectedly. She really was embarrassed right now; just now she had accused Yuta of taking it slow and not finishing the duel, and now suddenly she had made such a basic mistake.

"My turn! Draw! First, I discard a card to banish your Sword of the Deep-Seated!"

[Harpie's Pet Dragon]

[ATK 2800 → 2300]

"Next I attack the Harpie Lady in your field to end the duel! Go! Hyper Dragon Cannon!"

The red-haired Harpie Sister Airo felt like she was suddenly suffering from an unprovoked disaster.

She was just quietly watching the duel from the side without any sound, enjoying a good show, and now suddenly she was chosen as a target of the attack.

Who would feel happy about this?

"I discard Kuriboh from my hand to activate its effect! The damage taken from this battle becomes zero!" Yuta immediately played his life-saving card. Otherwise, he felt like he might not even have time to play it anymore in the future.

As soon as Yuta finished speaking, a little brown fluffy puffball jumped out in front of Airo and protected her.

But she thought wrong.

The one the little puffball was protecting was not her but Mai behind her.

"Tch, you are wasting your time! Give up! I set one card and end my turn," Yako said annoyingly as he finished his turn.

"My turn! Draw!"

Bacon Saver!

"I activate the ability of Graceful Charity in my hand to draw three additional cards!"

First draw, Witch of the Black Forest!

Second draw, Graverobber!

Third draw, Synthesis!

"I discard the cards Bacon Saver and Black Witch from my hand! Black Witch's effect activates! I add Sangan to my hand!"

Looking at Yuta, who was furiously discarding and adding cards to his hand, Mai finally felt like he had become a little more familiar.

Maybe she really was overthinking it before.

"Next I summon my true ace monster! Come forth, the dragon with thousand faces that represents infinite potential. The Fiercest! The Ferocious! The Dreadful! Red-Eyes Black Dragon!"

*ROARRRRRR*

Red-Eyes arrived in the field with a grand roar!

It also was itching for a fight.

In the last two duels, it didn't even have a chance to make an appearance before the duels abruptly finished.

"Pfft, just a mere 2400 ATK points and you call it your true ace? Even the blue fiend from before would have made a better one," said Yako mockingly.

Zoa: Boss, have I offended you somewhere before? Why are you digging my grave!?

Hearing their words, Mai also had a smirk on her face.

She didn't know why, but whenever someone insulted Red-Eyes Black Dragon for its low ATK points, she felt a weird sense of gratification; it was like looking at someone courting death and not knowing it.

After all, for Red-Eyes, its ATK points were never the main focus.

"We will see about that! Next, I activate Metalmorph and transform my Red-Eyes into a brand-new form! Arise, Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon!"

Red-Eyes roared towards the sky as a black metallic substance covered its body.

What stood before them was a metallic beast painted in jet black!

Looking at this familiar proud figure, Yuta smirked.

Yes, Red-Eyes was his favourite monster, but he had a special fondness for the Black Metal form, as this was the first card he created and added effects to.

This Red-Eyes was truly 'his'.

[Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon]

[ATK 2800 / DEF 2400]

"Because its new typing is Machine, it is also privy to the field bonus!"

[Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon]

[ATK 2800 → 3100]

Next, Yuta wanted to revive the original Red-Eyes that was sent to the graveyard with his monster reborn, but he was not sure if it would be hit by the power of bs since the Red-Eyes on the field was technically the same one, just wearing armour. So since he was not sure, it was better to keep it as a trump card for the future. Because if he couldn't win this turn with the metal dragon, he was sure that he could print a new vest on the spot.

"Now, metal dragon! Destroy their VWXYZ-Dragon Catapult Cannon. Dark Mega Flare!"

Even before Yuta gave his order, Red-Eyes had started to condense a dark ball crackling with red lightning inside its mouth!

"Brother, is this person stupid? Our monster is clearly stronger, so why would he attack?" Mako asked in confusion.

"I do not know, sister, but I think he might have some problems with his head," replied Yako seriously.

"Oi, you two! As the dragon that represents infinite potential, how could Red-Eyes have lost the inherent ability of the trap card that made it transform into this form? During the battle phase, Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon can raise its ATK points by half of the monster it is attacking. Black Metal Dragon, go! Gear shift!"

When it heard the order, jet flames appeared under Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon's feet, and it took off into the air; then, with the sound of gears turning, it suddenly started to fly even faster towards VWXYZ-Dragon Catapult Cannon!

[Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon]

[ATK 3100 → 4750]

"Hmph, so what!? VWXYZ-Dragon Catapult Cannon, disengage!" Yako arrogantly declared, as if he had already seen the result, but this time he was wrong!

Soon the giant robot split into two different monsters once again, dodging the Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon that was about to cleave it in half!

"Sorry, unlike a dumb blonde bimbo I am not going to name, I remembered this was going to happen."

"You!" Mai pointed towards Yuta in impotent rage.

They were a team!

A team!

There was no need for friendly fire!

"I activate the effect of Bacon Saver from my Graveyard to redirect Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon's attack towards VW-Tiger Catapult!"

Yuta was not sure if this was going to work, but it didn't matter.

He believed that if Bacon Saver could be used to cancel attacks, it should also be able to redirect them as well.

After Yuta gave his comment, a disheartened little piggy crawled out from the ground.

It didn't want to stay outside anymore than it had to since the new episode of the anime it was watching had arrived, so it pulled out a feather from somewhere and tickled its own nose.

Then its skeleton shot out, hitting the metal dragon, redirecting it towards the tiger catapult!

Seeing the results, Yuta nodded to himself as one of his conjectures turned out to be true.

Mai, on the other hand, thought that this little piggy did not look that hateful anymore; in fact, it even started to look a little pitiful.

The metal dragon then arrived in front of the trembling tiger catapult and fired its shot.

A giant cloud of smoke covered the field as a result.

"This attack must have got them right!?" Tristan asked in excitement, but as soon as he heard those words, Yuta wanted to go down and give this guy a good beating.

He was already worried about the nuclear smoke cloud; after all, it is well-known in anime that the presence of smoke indicates that there is no damage.

But as if that was not enough, this insensitive bastard added another flag on top of that to make sure the twins survived.

He was seriously doubting whether Tristan was an enemy spy planted next to him by Kaiba.

"Trap card activate! Iron Resolve! All the damage we take to our points this battle phase becomes 0, and then we forcefully end the battle phase!" Yako declared as he activated the trap card he just drew last round.

He felt lucky; if not for Mai's help, this round they probably would have lost.

Yuta also noticed this, but he did the math, and... damn! He really survived due to Mai's Card of Sanctity.

If not for that, his draw this turn would have been Graceful Charity.

If he played it, he would draw Threatening Roar, Monster Reborn and Bacon Saver.

Discard Bacon Saver and Tsurugi.

Play the same way as this turn.

They really would have won!

No wonder there is a saying that I do not fear a godly enemy but a pig-like teammate.

Yuta turned to look at Mai, who was avoiding his gaze, as it looked like she also noticed the crux of the problem.

Just last turn, she was talking about winning this duel all by herself, and the next turn, her actions directly allowed the enemy to survive.

This face slap really came too fast.

"I set down two cards and end my turn," Yuta grumbled to himself. Anyway, at worst, he would print a new vest next turn, but it really irritated him that the enemy survived due to Mai's actions.

"My turn! Draw! I activate the spell Monster Reborn and revive VW-Tiger Catapult! Next is the move we are all familiar with by now. Union!"

"Then I discard a card to banish your dragon from this game!" This time Mako did not even bother with the trap cards, as she felt like this dragon was the most dangerous, and she needed to get rid of it as soon as possible.

"Then I at—"

"Stop! Trap carp threatening roar..." Yuta said listlessly as he suddenly lost all his interest in this duel. He did not even react to Red-Eyes being banished to a different dimension.

Mako looked in disbelief.

She only did not take trap cards seriously for one single turn, and suddenly it directly took the opportunity to win from her hands.

"Then I end my turn..." Mako said as she stamped her feet in anger.

"My turn! Draw!" This time Mai was ready to wash away her shame and win this round!

"Hey, Mai!"

But Yuta's words broke Mai's concentration, and she looked at him with a question mark on her face.

"Left is for coolness and right is for potential; the rest is up to you," Yuta said while pointing to the cards he had set.

Suddenly, everyone in the field got serious.

Yuta's words indicated that the cards he had set were a combination that could help Mai in this round.

The question was whether Mai could understand Yuta's hint.

So Mai seriously started to consider what they could be.

Coolness... when did Yuta look his coolest?

No, the premise was wrong.

The premise should be, when did Yuta feel that he looked the coolest?

Thinking like that, Mai's eyes immediately took on a bright hue and promptly activated the left card.

She did not know the name of the card, but she could be sure of its effect!

"I activate the left card set by Yuta last turn to revive Red-Eyes Black Dragon from the graveyard!" Mai declared as she clicked on the panel, and it gave off a green light, proving that Mai was right.

Yuta then proceeded to reveal the card, which was Monster Reborn, just like the one Mako played last round.

"But how? We banished it last turn!" Mako tried to argue, but Yutaka was not going to let her.

"Sorry, but Red-Eyes Black Dragon and Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon are entirely different monsters. At best, Black Metal Dragon can be called a future possibility of Red-Eyes, so upon summoning it, the original card is indeed sent to the graveyard." Yuta replied and shut Mako up.

With that, a black hole opened in the sky, and Red-Eyes flew out, covered in red lightning.

It certainly was not pleased with being sent to the graveyard, but this time it was sure that its master would print a new vest to win... wait! Why is it the blondie's turn?

Red-Eyes looked confusedly at its master, but Yuta just nodded in response.

He wanted to see if he could piggyback off of Mai's destiny to print a new vest and divert the cost to her.

Looking at the mighty black dragon in front of her, Mai was excited and felt a connection between it and her soul.

She now fully believed that she could unleash its potential no worse than Yuta!

That brings us back to the key word 'potential'.

The word that represented Red-Eyes and its myriad possibilities.

So how could she unleash this potential?

Fusion?

But with what?

She didn't think either her Harpie or Pet Dragon had the potential to combine with Red-Eyes.

"Mai, did you know? Yugi once said that if you believe a card exists, then it must certainly exist somewhere in the world." Yuta spoke to himself from the side without looking at Mai.

This was the limit of his interference; otherwise, the experiment would lose its purpose, and he would be the one to pay the cost of Red-Eyes' new vest. It has to be Mai that came up with the idea, not himself.

So he also excitedly waited like a kid on christmas eve, awaiting tomorrow to open his present.

Tristan, on the other hand, looked around confused. He did not remember Yugi saying any words along those lines.

Was he friends with Yugi or Yuta?

Why did he not remember anything?

Mai chewed on those words; she did not know if it really was true, but she decided to bet on this possibility!

"I activate the right set card and fuse my Harpie's Pet Dragon and Red-Eyes Black Dragon to form a brand new monster!" Mai declared as she clasped her hands together with a bang.

Looking at her, Yuta revealed the Polymerization he had set on the second turn as a bluff with a wide grin on his face.

The two dragons looked at each other, and Red-Eyes snorted and flew away. It did not want to fuse with this birdbrain, but the order was already given.

The two dragons flew into the sky, circling each other, and reached to the black clouds in the sky that appeared when Yuta summoned Black Metal Dragon.

Soon, a red lightning struck the two dragons, fusing them together, and Mai immediately felt like she lost all of her energy.

She was confused.

What just happened?

Why was she feeling so tired all of a sudden?

But there was no time to hesitate, as the duel was waiting for her to finish it.

"A brand new possibility has emerged from the merger of two different souls, a possibility that would never have come to pass if not for this moment! Now arise! Harpie's Black Pet Dragon!"

As Mai finished her words, a dragon completely covered in black feathers landed on the Duel Arena with a powerful bang.

It was a feathered dragon, just like those in the aztec myths.

No, rather than a dragon, it looked more like a wyvern.

It still had the mask that represented its identity as a member of the Harpie Clan, but there was no longer a chain wrapped around its neck.

Its white underbelly was covered in mysterious red markings, just like those of Meteor Black Dragon.

Under its mask, there was a pair of crimson eyes that looked down on the world.

Then Black Pet Dragon roared towards the sky and lifted its wings as red lightning fell all around it.

Mai felt like she could feel the heat emanating from this dragon, almost as if it was truly alive at this moment.

Was this the legendary dragon?

Was this why Yuta was so obsessed with it?

Was this feeling also why Kaiba was so obsessed with Blue-Eyes?

If so, she could understand them, as the sense of power she was feeling at this moment was intoxicating.

Which was confusing.

She felt so tired that she looked like she could faint at any second, but she also felt like there was boundless strength hidden in her body.

[Harpie's Black Pet Dragon] [DARK]

[LV: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★]

[DRAGON / EFFECT]

[3300 ATK / 2100 DEF]

"First effect of Harpie's Black Pet Dragon! It gains 300 points for each Harpie monster in the graveyard, including two Harpie Ladies and Pet Dragon that was sent to the graveyard due to the fusion, there are a total of three harpie monsters so it will gain a total of 900 points!"

[Harpie's Black Pet Dragon] [DARK]

[ATK 3300 → 4200]

Yuta nodded to himself.

This effect was kind of like a chicken rib. It was not fulfilling to eat it, but it certainly was a waste to throw it away.

"Now! Harpie's Black Pet Dragon! Destroy that annoying robot once and for all! Fearsome Inferno Blast!!"

Pinkish-red flames gathered in the mouth of Harpie's Black Pet Dragon, reminiscent of Red-Eyes Black Dragon's own signature attack.

"Huh, naive! So what if your monster can increase its ATK points? Don't tell me you forgot the effect of our monster once again? Disengage!"

Mai blushed but immediately retorted, "Then you would be wrong! Harpie's Black Pet Dragon can attack once for each Harpie monster in my graveyard, but for each extra attack, I need to banish one harpie monster from the graveyard!"

[Harpie's Black Pet Dragon] [DARK]

[ATK 4200 → 3900]

Looking at the robot that divided into two, just dodge its powerful attack. Harpie's Pet Dragon gave a harpie-like laugh, and then it started to gather flames in its mouth again.

[Yako & Mako: 1900 → 0]
