Chapter 31 - After the roar

For the first time since the nightmare began—

There was no gunfire.

No screaming.

No roar shaking the sky.

Only smoke drifting through broken streets, emergency lights flickering against cracked concrete, and the low hum of Ada's helicopter fading into the distance.

Nobita sat on the ground, back against a damaged barricade, breathing slowly. The black-and-white lightning that once wrapped his body had faded into faint sparks, like dying embers.

Shizuka still hadn't let go of his arm.

"You're not allowed to do that again," she said firmly, eyes red.

"Do what?" Nobita asked weakly.

"Getting eaten," she snapped.

Gian snorted despite himself. "Yeah, man. At least warn us next time."

Suneo crossed his arms, shaking. "My heart almost exploded. I was already planning your funeral speech."

"…You'd give a speech?" Nobita asked.

"Of course," Suneo said proudly. "I'd cry the loudest."

Doraemon knelt beside them, scanning Nobita with his device, eyes serious.

"No broken bones," Doraemon muttered. "Internal damage… minimal...your healing system is not like another human have. ."

He looked up at Nobita. "…But don't scare us like that again."

Nobita smiled softly. "Sorry."

Leon, Helena, and Chris stood a little distance away, watching the kids regroup like something fragile but unbreakable.

Chris crossed his arms. "They bounce back faster than most soldiers I know."

Helena nodded. "…They shouldn't have to."

Gian suddenly slapped his useless air cannon. "Hey, Doraemon! These things totally died back there!"

Suneo waved his lightning arc gun. "Mine too! It just fizzled out!"

Doraemon sighed and reached into his pouch. "These gadgets were overcharged by the mutation field. It's normal."

He pulled out two compact devices and handed them over.

"To you, Gian—Ultra Reinforced Air Blaster, lower power, more stable."

Gian's eyes lit up. "OHHH! YES!"

"And Suneo—Arc Pulse Emitter. No flashy lightning, but reliable."

Suneo hugged it instantly. "Reliable is my middle name."

"It's not," Gian muttered.

Nearby, Dekisugi slowly stood, still bruised but steady. He walked over to Doraemon, rubbing the back of his neck.

"…Doraemon," he said carefully, "about the Small Light… I know it was destroyed but—do you have another one?"

The group went quiet.

Doraemon's hand paused mid-movement.

"…No," he said gently. "That was the only one I had."

Dekisugi blinked. "O-Oh…"

Doraemon continued, voice soft but firm. "I trusted you with it because you could handle it. I don't keep backups of things that dangerous."

Dekisugi nodded slowly. "…I understand."

Shizuka stepped closer. "You did your best, Dekisugi.

Dekisugi smiled faintly. "…Thanks."

Suneo's attention shifted suddenly.

"Hey—HEY—what about that dagger?"

All eyes turned to Nobita's side.

The Void-Fang, The new dagger that nobita holds..its white blade pristine despite the blood around it, black guard folded like stylized wings. Faint lightning crawled across its surface, alive but calm.

Gian leaned closer. "That thing looks sick."

"…Can I touch it?" Suneo asked cautiously.

Nobita hesitated. "…Maybe don't—"

Too late.

Gian reached out and poked the blade.

ZAP.

A tiny white lightning arc snapped against Gian's fingers.

"OW—!" Gian yelped, jerking his hand back. "HEY!"

The lightning vanished instantly.

Nobita blinked. "…That was small."

Doraemon says. "The weapon responds to intent. It didn't sense hostility—just curiosity."

Gian shook his hand. "…Still hurts!"

Shizuka tilted her head. "It didn't hurt Nobita."

Leon watched quietly. "…Guess it chose him."

Nobita looked down at Void-Fang, thoughtful. "…It's not just a weapon. It feels… aware."

The wind shifted.

Something felt wrong.

Dekisugi frowned and pointed. "…Everyone—look."

Behind them—

The massive corpse of the T-Rex mutation loomed… but where its torso should have been—

There was a hole.

A massive, torn opening straight through the body.

No remains.

No Simmons.

Silence fell again—but heavier this time.

Chris's expression hardened instantly. "…He's gone."

Leon stepped forward slowly. "…He escaped."

Shizuka felt her stomach drop. "No…"

Nobita stood up, eyes narrowing. "…I felt it earlier. The fight ended too… clean."

A distant sound echoed.

WHUP—WHUP—WHUP

They all turned.

Behind collapsed buildings, a black military helicopter lifted into the air. Armed soldiers inside. A familiar silhouette stepped aboard—

Tall. Calm. Smiling.

Simmons.

He glanced down at the battlefield.

At Nobita.

Their eyes met—for just a second.

Simmons' lips moved.

"Next time".

The helicopter banked sharply and vanished into the smoke-choked sky.

Gian clenched his fists. "…He ran."

Suneo swallowed. "He always does, doesn't he…"

Doraemon looked up at Nobita. "…This isn't over."

Nobita tightened his grip on Void-Fang, lightning flickering faintly.

"…I know."

The night grew quiet again.

But not peaceful.
