Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 Pretending to be too much

When Chuanfeng returned home, he didn't see Shuomao in the dojo. That brother of his, who only ever cared about completing missions, spent all his time working and training. His social circle was so tiny that what happened later—the suicide incident—wasn't surprising.

But with Hatakawa Kaze's deliberate guidance, the story turned out far more interesting than the original. At least someone was there to narrate his joys and sorrows, so he wouldn't be trapped inside a dead end.

When I entered the living room, my sister-in-law was feeding her beloved ninja dog.

My sister-in-law had long brown hair draped over her shoulders, and two red markings on her face. Instead of making her look strange, they gave her a unique charm.

The ninja hound was a massive black dog, half the height of an adult. A thick ring of fur ran from its neck to the top of its head, covering its ears. One look was enough to tell it was not an ordinary dog.

There was no doubt that my sister-in-law belonged to the Inuzuka clan. Her original name was Inuzuka Natsuyu—a very beautiful name.

"You're pretty too. Just like Chuanfeng always says—my sister-in-law must be blind to fall for a boring guy like you."

At that, Shuomao would glare at his brother, then turn back to his wife with a doting smile.

"Chuanfeng, you're back. Your brother spent the whole day yelling inside the dojo."

Hatakawa Natsuyu didn't even look up. She recognized her brother-in-law by scent alone.

"Haha, this broken blade is perfect as a replacement."

"Out with the old, in with the new."

With a bright smile, Chuanfeng walked up to Ghost Mastiff, crouched down, and began rubbing its thick fur vigorously.

Who could understand how this giant ninja dog felt? It was amazing.

Look at what Kakashi has—a tiny ninja puppy?

This made my sister-in-law embarrassed. Except for a sharper sense of smell, Kakashi hadn't inherited any of her good traits.

Chuanfeng decided Kakashi should raise a mastiff. Otherwise, how could he be worthy of the future head of the Hatake clan?

The ghost mastiff whimpered unhappily. If this guy weren't the owner's brother-in-law, I would have bitten him already.

"What? I'm just wiping him a little. You're so stingy."

Chuanfeng clearly sensed the mastiff's displeasure. He patted its head, then reluctantly withdrew his hand.

He keeps rubbing the same spot… I'm practically going bald. It's ruining my look.

"Don't keep touching that ghost mastiff's head. You'll make it dumb,"Natsuyu said, rolling her eyes. She didn't understand why her brother-in-law liked petting such a fierce-looking dog.

The ghost mastiff nodded in agreement—as if saying, If you dare take a picture of me again, I won't go easy on you.

"Is my brother not home?"

Chuanfeng casually asked, trying to gather some info. If things looked bad, he was ready to flee.

"I went to the weapon shop… then to the ancestral shrine to apologize,"Natsuyu said.

"You could go talk to him too."

She sounded helpless. Even though her husband and brother-in-law were siblings, their personalities were worlds apart.

"I don't know what kind of girl could ever 'conquer' a man like my brother-in-law," she muttered.

"I think we can relax now."

"He's probably going to stay kneeling there until dinner."

Hearing that, Chuanfeng happily stood up and headed to his room for a nap.

"..."

After feeding the ghost mastiff, Natsuyu was speechless. He was clearly the one who broke White Fang, yet now he was gloating.

"Call me when dinner is ready," Chuanfeng said, stretching before returning to his room.

"Got it."

Covering her face, Natsuyu whispered, "Forget it. Let those two brothers sort it out themselves."

After a comfortable nap, Chuanfeng woke to the ghost mastiff calling him.

The dog had been pacing at the door for a long time before finally working up the courage to enter. Chuanfeng's existence cast a shadow over its entire life.

It pushed the door open, barked once at him, then ran away without looking back.

"I was just taking you to eat some dog meat. Why are you being so dramatic?"

"Naïve creature."

Yawning and cracking his neck, Chuanfeng got up to eat.

When I reached the dining room, the servants had already set the table.

Hatake Shuomao, with his unusually sharp eyes and nose, sat at the head. His wife sat on the right. The empty seat on the left belonged naturally to Chuanfeng.

The Hatake clan had few members. With Kakashi nowhere in sight, the dining room was silent.

Ignoring Shuomao's dark, gloomy face, Chuanfeng simply took his seat.

"Eat, eat."

Without waiting for his older brother, he started first. With only the three of them, he didn't bother with etiquette.

He picked up a piece of sushi and popped it into his mouth. Chuanfeng always thought it was just a seaweed rice roll anyway.

Natsuyu looked at her husband's face, almost black like a pot bottom, sighed, and began eating with Chuanfeng.

"Can you even eat right now?"

Shuomao finally couldn't hold back. Watching his brother eat so happily made him furious.

"I'm still growing, you know."

Chuanfeng replied while chewing roast suckling pig, taking a moment between bites to answer.

"You know…"

"Yes, the ancestral sword."

Chuanfeng cut him off. That old stubborn man only ever repeated two phrases—his combat ability was embarrassingly low.

"Do you know why that precious ancestral sword broke?"Chuanfeng asked, leaving Shuomao speechless.

You couldn't exactly say the sword was low quality.

He swallowed the roast pig, washed it down with a cup of wine, and continued acting like no one could do better than him.

"Because at that time, I wasn't part of the Hatake household."

"Starting today…"

"I, Kawai Hatake, will treat this blade as the heirloom weapon to be passed down through generations."

His brother and sister-in-law were stunned. They never imagined the younger brother (or brother-in-law) would have such ambition.

"I'm… very moved."

"To honor our ancestors."

Shuomao excitedly raised his cup and clinked it against Chuanfeng's empty one before downing it in one gulp.

Natsuyu drank with him.

This left Chuanfeng baffled.

Hey, I was just trying to act cool. No need for this. You're making me embarrassed.

Shuomao's emotions finally settled. He no longer brooded over the broken White Fang.

Dinner was delightful.

Chuanfeng couldn't refuse his brother's enthusiasm and ended up finishing all the leftover alcohol he hadn't finished at noon.

During this time, Shuomao said many things Chuanfeng never expected. In his brother's eyes, he had become more mature.

"You brat, you make good money."

"You brat, I can't beat you."

"You brat, all you do is piss me off."

...

In the end, with eighty percent of his senses dulled by alcohol, Shuomao announced—while leaning on his wife—that he wanted to offer incense to the ancestors again, declaring a great figure would rise within the Hatake clan.

As the instigator, Chuanfeng could only watch silently. He never expected his brother to take his words so seriously—what a headache.

Reviving the clan and becoming a powerful ninja… that wasn't his dream.

He just wanted to date the prettiest girls, drink the strongest liquor, and ride the finest horses.

Why did he suddenly feel a heavy burden on his shoulders? His head spun as he shook it.

He quickly grabbed the ghost mastiff, which hadn't left yet, and made it haul him back to his room.

The poor dog probably wasn't very bright. The only reason it hadn't run off was because it couldn't figure out what Chuanfeng wanted.

And now it had to carry this over-100-pound man back to his hellish room. Life was tough indeed.
