Chapter 49 - The Shadow of the Three Idiots of Class D

A girl's blush surpasses everything else.

Natsuki Subaru smiled gently at Hiyori Shiina, whose face was flushed and whose speech was becoming somewhat incoherent.

No one does things without meaning, and he was no exception.

'The Devotion of Suspect X... is it?' Natsuki Subaru was clearly aware that this was not purely about sharing a novel. The hardcover edition also represented Hiyori Shiina's serious attitude. Perhaps she wanted him to understand something through the medium of the novel.

"Strictly speaking, according to my calculations, it's enough to cover my expenses for one semester."

"I might struggle to make it through summer break."

Natsuki Subaru played along with Hiyori Shiina perfectly, continuing the topic she had initiated: "I originally thought it would be enough to let me live comfortably for a year no matter what."

"It seems that in a while, I'll need to consider earning personal points again."

It wasn't just about earning enough personal points for his own expenses. If there was an opportunity, Natsuki Subaru decided he would make a big score, earning enough personal points to deal with any emergency situation.

Based on Natsuki Subaru's understanding of this academy and the scale of points issued every month, having ten to twenty million personal points should be enough to handle the vast majority of emergencies within this school.

Last time, before being taken away by the police, Natsuki Subaru had actually asked about something. For example, asking Arisu Sakayanagi's father: if one accidentally killed someone, could points be used to gain immunity? After all... this academy claimed that as long as one had enough points, anything could be bought.

The result was that Arisu Sakayanagi's father, in extreme anger, tried to take Subaru down with him right then and there. With no other choice, Natsuki Subaru could only dispose of him and then reset.

"One semester... if you include accommodation..."

Hearing Natsuki Subaru's answer, Hiyori Shiina said somewhat speechlessly, "Outside, three or four hundred thousand yen a month might not even be enough, but many things in this school are sold at cost price."

"Although, it feels like earning points is really easy for you, Natsuki-kun..."

Even though Year 1, Class C almost beat each other's brains out over the issue of personal points last month. Hiyori Shiina complained silently in her heart.

The only thing Hiyori Shiina felt fortunate about was probably that Natsuki Subaru no longer seemed interested in the competition between classes. Otherwise, she would be a little worried about him. Because the leader of Year 1, Class C was really not a good person. As long as no one hindered him, he wouldn't do anything excessive. In the end, it just meant that Year 1, Class D might be tight on points for the next three years.

However, Natsuki Subaru has nearly one million personal points. If things get really difficult, I can also... Hiyori Shiina's thoughts continued to drift.

"Well, I get the feeling that Shiina-san is thinking about some scattered things. In any case, I will read this novel seriously."

Natsuki Subaru spoke to Hiyori Shiina with a tone that carried a hint of seriousness.

"Alright, you don't need to be so serious."

Seeing Natsuki Subaru looking at her so earnestly, Hiyori Shiina subconsciously began to avert her gaze, complaining in a small voice, "Really..."

Time quickly moved on to the next day.

A low pressure permeated the classroom, especially in the area at the back of the class. The students of Year 1, Class D still hadn't moved on from yesterday's news, and it wasn't just that.

During yesterday's homeroom, the homeroom teacher, Sae Chabashira, had announced a despairing piece of news. That was: starting from May, in every midterm and final exam, those who failed would be expelled.

Most people's grades were not particularly outstanding, especially since they had let themselves go for a period of time. Among them, Haruki Yamauchi, Kanji Ike, and the others reacted the most intensely.

"What do we do, what do we do?!"

"In the last quiz, let alone passing, I was far from even the low score line!"

In the last row of Year 1, Class D, Haruki Yamauchi was frantically complaining to Kanji Ike and the others.

At a time like this, only by being with people like Kanji Ike who also had no way to pass could Haruki Yamauchi feel a slight sense of relief in his heart, preventing him from becoming completely anxious.

"Hey, Ike, Sudou, say something! Are we just going to sit here and wait for death?"

Although the hope was very slim, Haruki Yamauchi still tried to get some help from his good friends.

"There's still a month left. Let's study hard. Maybe we can make it?"

Kanji Ike sighed along with him.

Although his grades were a tiny bit better than Haruki Yamauchi's—Yamauchi couldn't even reach the low score, while he, Kanji Ike, was just at the low score level. However, Kanji Ike had absolutely not confidence in spanning the gap from a low score to a passing grade.

"Our Class D is meant to be defective goods anyway. I think the school just wants to take this opportunity to clean us out."

"Bastard! Don't talk about defective goods here!"

Ken Sudou smashed his fist on the desk in frustration.

"Training in the basketball club every day is already exhausting enough, and now I have to deal with this here... I'll deal with it when the time comes."

Impatience aside, Ken Sudou had already begun to prepare himself for expulsion.

Among the three, and even in the entire class, Ken Sudou had the worst grades. He didn't think that a short month would allow his grades to improve much. Getting a low score would already be very impressive.

Rather than working hard for a month only to still face expulsion, he might as well take advantage of the final time to continue enjoying life.

'Are the missing spots in the upper-year classes all due to failing exams?'

Natsuki Subaru sat in his seat, resting his chin on his hand as he watched Haruki Yamauchi and the others discussing heatedly.

Yesterday, after learning the standard that failing exams would lead to expulsion, Natsuki Subaru had already begun to think about this question, because it was a big issue.

If Class D in the upper years lacked students because of this, it would be understandable. But according to Natsuki Subaru's observations, almost all classes had personnel gaps. It was one thing for Class C and Class D to have such students, but Natsuki Subaru did not believe that Class A and Class B would have students expelled due to failing exams.

So, from this, another conclusion could basically be drawn. Besides failing exams being grounds for expulsion, there must be other issues that lead to student expulsions.
