Chapter 179 - No One Used As Bait

Lao did not lose the old group because he was too violent.

He lost it because he arranged violence and called the result rescue.

The memory returned when Thuận saw the reflected camera image. Fourteen again. The disused Lê Quý Đôn gym. Hạo Nhiên away at an MMA event everyone believed was only sport.

Lao told them three older students were coming to reclaim the protection list. He said the safest plan was to meet them at the disused campus gym before they reached the classrooms.

Thuận believed the location gave them control.

Tân Thành believed standing together made the numbers manageable.

Tân Phong asked who had confirmed the threat.

Lao said confirmation was what frightened people demanded before courage.

The older students arrived with eight others.

Then the side doors locked.

Not from outside.

From Lao's instructions.

He had told two younger boys to chain them so nobody could flee before the winner was clear. One of those boys still wore a middle-school uniform. Lao had promised protection if he helped.

The fight filled the disused campus gym.

Lao loved the center. He struck where everyone could see and shouted names before each punishment so fear would remember ownership.

Tân Thành fought beside him at first. Lao had saved his brother once. Debt made brutality look like confidence.

Then one of the younger boys became trapped behind the ropes.

An older attacker saw him and changed targets.

Lao did not move.

"He chose the chain," Lao said. "Let him learn the cost."

Tân Thành left the center.

He took the attack on both forearms and drove the younger boy toward Tân Phong.

"They leave first!"

That was the first version of their rule.

Tân Phong found a rusted latch behind stacked pads. It did not open the chained door. It opened a narrow equipment passage leading to the alley.

He could have left alone.

Instead, he returned with the route.

Thuận stopped trying to win the gym.

He divided it.

Students unwilling to fight moved toward Tân Phong. Tân Thành held the passage. Thuận redirected pressure away from the line. The more people escaped, the less audience Lao possessed.

"Come back!" Lao shouted.

No one did.

By the time Hạo Nhiên returned, Lao had won the center and lost the room.

The older attackers had fled. Two younger students sat in the alley bleeding. Tân Thành's eye had swollen shut. Tân Phong still held the stolen protection list inside his shirt.

Lao stood beneath the ring light waiting for praise.

Hạo Nhiên looked at the chained doors.

Then at the middle-school boy.

"You did not protect them," he told Lao. "You arranged witnesses."

Lao's face changed.

Not shame.

Recognition that someone had named the method correctly.

That night, Hạo Nhiên refused to teach him the deeper branch.

Lao blamed Thuận because Thuận had become the alternative standing in the room. Balance. Routes. Restraint. Everything Lao considered fear wearing clean clothes.

The trio wrote four rules on the back of the protection list.

Every operation needs a real exit.

Ordinary people leave before fighters settle anything.

Nobody is used as bait.

Two members can stop one member's command.

Lao refused to sign.

"The weakest voice can stop the strongest hand," he said. "That is how groups die."

"Then you are not in this group," Tân Phong answered.

It was the bravest thing he had said while standing still.

In the present, Thuận placed the photograph of the hidden diagnostic screen beside the old protection list. Two documents built years apart. Both used people without telling them the complete fight.

Tân Thành touched the rule about bait.

"The Union used Tín."

"And us," Thuận said.

Tân Phong looked at Thuận. "You almost entered because you wanted a public answer."

"I entered because Tín offered a separate record."

"That is your explanation. The camera still got what it wanted."

Thuận did not defend the choice.

Outside, Hạo Nhiên listened from the stairwell without entering. The old failure had stopped being history. It had become a diagnostic screen with lawful formatting.

He entered after the trio finished speaking.

Tân Thành looked at him. "Where were you that night?"

The question was fourteen years old in feeling even if the boys were not.

"At an MMA ranking event arranged through Lục Hoa," Hạo Nhiên said.

"Sport?"

"That was the public layer. The deeper matches determined which young guides could carry branch instruction between cities. I thought earning rank would let me protect you better."

Tân Phong touched the old list. "You left to become more useful and returned after usefulness expired."

"Yes."

Hạo Nhiên did not decorate the failure.

He took four blank cards and placed them beside the old rules.

"Write what each rule protects. Not what it forbids."

Tân Phong wrote choice beneath real exit.

Tân Thành wrote life beneath ordinary people first.

Thuận wrote dignity beneath no bait.

The final rule waited.

Two can stop one.

Thuận wrote group.

Tân Phong crossed it out and wrote freedom.

Tân Thành crossed both words and wrote each other.

Hạo Nhiên left all three visible.

"Lao believed disagreement made a group weak," he said. "The Union believes disagreement makes a person unclassifiable. Both want the same convenience: strength that never refuses its owner."

Thuận looked at the reflected diagnostic photograph.

"Then why did Lục Hoa tell us not to interfere?"

"Because a martial school can become another owner while believing its balance is mercy."

"And if neutrality leaves children in the register?"

Hạo Nhiên's answer took too long.

"Then neutrality must be judged too."

It was not permission.

It was the first time he admitted Lục Hoa could be part of the failing field.

Tân Thành remained after the others left and turned the old protection list over in his hands.

"I admired him," he said.

Hạo Nhiên knew who.

"He entered when my brother was trapped. You were not there. Thuận was still thinking. Lao moved."

"Fast action can save a person."

"And make him loyal to the wrong reason."

Hạo Nhiên placed one chipped cup beside him. "Then remember both truths. If you erase the rescue, you will never understand why people follow him."
