Chapter 102 - The Room Is Empty

The holding room opened too easily.

Minh knew before the door finished moving.

Still, he entered.

The room beyond had been arranged like a sentence.

One chair.

One medical strap cut cleanly at the edge.

One paper cup of tea still warm.

One torn page from Dataset 06, folded into a square.

One laptop open on the desk.

No Hạ Yên.

The absence hit harder than a body would have.

Bodies gave the mind something to hold. Absence made every possibility arrive at once.

Minh stepped inside with both hands visible because even grief could be filmed.

The laptop screen brightened.

Huyền Kha appeared, somewhere else now. Moving vehicle, maybe. Dark window behind him. His cheek had begun swelling from the wall impact.

"You reached the room," he said.

Minh looked at the empty chair.

"You took her."

"We moved her."

"Say kidnapped."

Huyền Kha tilted his head. "Words have legal consequences."

Minh almost laughed.

It came out as breath.

"You built all this for data."

"Not all." Huyền Kha's eyes moved once, maybe to another screen. "Some of it was logistics."

Minh picked up the Dataset page with a tissue from the desk, not fingers.

Huyền Kha noticed.

"Still careful."

"Still watching."

"Of course."

Minh faced the laptop.

"You lost the footage."

For the first time, Huyền Kha's expression paused clearly.

No public monster. No clean Gomboc takeover. No beautiful clip of Minh becoming what every institution wanted permission to seize.

Then the pause vanished.

"I collected enough."

"Not everything."

"No one collects everything," Huyền Kha said. "That is why we continue."

The screen shifted to show a scrolling report:

Updated control pattern.

Anchor absent but internalized.

Training influence confirmed.

Hạ Yên page moved to locked file.

Subject denies clean monster footage under emotional load.

Minh read the last line and felt colder than the stairwell touch.

Even refusal had become data.

Huyền Kha smiled softly.

"Next time, we remove what makes refusal sustainable."

The screen went black.

Minh stood in the empty room until Lãnh Phong's footsteps reached the hall.

He did not turn.

He did not know what face he would see.

Only that, for once, Lãnh Phong would not look amused.

The empty room was worse than a body.

A body would have ended one kind of fear. Horror, grief, action. Minh could imagine those shapes. The empty chair gave him nothing to strike and everything to imagine.

The strap mark on the armrest was fresh. A cup of tea sat half-finished, still faintly warm when Minh held his hand near it. Not long gone. Long enough.

Hạ Yên had been here.

The thought entered quietly and destroyed the room.

Minh wanted to run after the route. Every instinct pointed toward motion. Down the service stairs. Across the street. Through traffic if he had to. A boy could still catch a car in stories if he wanted badly enough.

But stories did not have tracking ink, edited footage, institutional reports, or opponents who built doors out of desire.

So Minh did the thing that felt least like love.

He stayed and collected evidence.

Photos. Chair. Cup. Strap. Laptop position. Page title. Vent direction. The torn fiber on the floor. The faint print near the table leg where a wheel had locked and turned.

His hands shook only after the tenth photo.

Huyền Kha's voice from the screen sounded almost gentle.

"Most people call this cold when someone they care about is missing."

Minh took another photo.

"Most people you study are already bleeding," he said.

The screen went quiet.

Not victory.

But a wound had reached back.

Lãnh Phong had once told him that the hardest thing in a rescue was accepting the room you reached was not the room you needed. Minh had thought it sounded cruel. Now he understood cruelty was sometimes just instruction arriving before experience made it useful.

When Lãnh Phong's footsteps reached the hall, Minh did not turn immediately. He needed one more second to be the person who had found the room before becoming the student who had failed to save her.

The laptop on the desk was not locked.

That made Minh distrust it immediately.

The screen showed an open folder named TRANSFER, with three files visible and one progress window frozen at ninety-seven percent. A younger version of Minh would have rushed to click. This version photographed the screen first, then the keyboard, then the dust around the mouse. The mouse had been moved recently by a gloved hand; the dust showed a clean crescent where fingers should have left oil and did not.

"Trap?" Lâm asked.

"Invitation," Minh said.

"Same thing."

He smiled despite the room, because Lâm still had enough sharpness to be annoying.

The tea cup bothered him more than the laptop. Hạ Yên did not drink tea that way. She left cups near books, near medicine, near windows. This cup sat centered as if placed for a photo. He crouched and saw a small crescent of lipstick on the rim anyway.

So she had touched it.

Alive here.

Moved after.

The thought steadied and wounded him together.

He photographed the cup, then the strap mark, then the wheel print. Evidence could not hug anyone. It could still follow where arms could not reach.

When Huyền Kha spoke from the screen, Minh did not look up.

"You are behaving more like Dr. Hạ than yourself."

Minh took another photo.

"Maybe you don't know myself."

The empty chair would return to Minh later in dreams, but not as horror. As assignment. A place where someone had been and was no longer. A reminder that arriving late did not excuse arriving careless. He photographed it once more from the doorway before leaving, because thresholds told stories centers did not.

The threshold photo caught Lãnh Phong's shadow entering the frame. Minh noticed only later. At the time, he was too focused on not running. In the image, the empty chair and the arriving shadow seemed to argue about which was stronger: absence or consequence.

Neither answered. The silence made Minh understand that rescue and failure could arrive through the same doorway.
