Chapter 100 - Stairwell Chart

Huyền Kha waited on the middle landing, neither top nor bottom, where wet steps, broken light, a wall mirror, and one camera made the stairwell feel smaller than it was.

"You improved," he said.

Minh stopped three steps below him.

"You ran."

"I collected."

Huyền Kha's hands were empty.

That meant nothing.

The first attack came from a coin.

It flashed toward Minh's left eye, not dangerous enough to injure, bright enough to steal attention. Minh did not follow it. Huyền Kha's foot touched the wet step where Minh would have shifted if he had.

Trap one failed.

Huyền Kha smiled.

"Camera awareness retained under visual distraction."

Minh stepped up.

Huyền Kha's sleeve moved.

A clinic pen appeared between two fingers, point angled toward the soft space between thumb and index finger. Same family of cruelty as the compass from the restroom. Small pain. Large hesitation.

Minh turned his palm, let the pen scrape sleeve instead of skin, and posted his forearm against Huyền Kha's elbow.

One Beat began.

Huyền Kha had been waiting for the beginning.

His other hand touched Minh's floating rib. Cold arrived as absence rather than pain.

For half a second, Minh's body lost the report from that side. Gomboc mistook numbness for freedom and surged into the gap.

Thiên Phú shouted from somewhere distant:

"Feedback compromised."

Huyền Kha's knee tapped Minh's thigh, changing the step before it finished.

Minh hit the wall shoulder-first.

The camera saw him lunge but missed the cold touch, the pen, and the coin.

Of course.

Huyền Kha spoke softly.

"Cold Ledger Hand. Touch, record, adjust, repeat."

He attacked again.

No big motion.

Pen to wrist. Shoulder into blind angle. Coin under heel. Nerve touch behind elbow. Every contact small enough for footage to misunderstand and precise enough for Minh's body to believe.

The stairwell had become Huyền Kha's chart.

Minh stopped trying to win the center.

Center was where the camera wanted him.

He let Huyền Kha take one step too high, then shifted into the mirror's blind edge. Not backward. Not forward. Sideways, the choice Lãnh Phong had beaten into his legs.

For the first time, Huyền Kha's next touch found empty air.

Minh placed his palm against Huyền Kha's shoulder for position rather than a strike.

The chart changed.

Huyền Kha's first real strike did not look like a strike.

He brushed Minh's wrist while stepping aside.

The touch was light, almost polite. Then Minh's fingers numbed for half a second, just long enough for the next movement to arrive late. Huyền Kha used delay the way Lao used force: not to dominate the body, but to edit timing.

Minh caught the wall before his shoulder hit the stair edge.

The stairwell was built for Huyền Kha. Wet patch on the third step. Loose rubber strip near the landing. Mirror angled to split attention. Clinic pen hidden between fingers. No single piece impressive. Together, a chart of small failures.

"You fight like paperwork," Minh said.

Huyền Kha's eyes brightened. "That is almost accurate."

He touched again. Forearm. Collarbone. Knuckle. Each contact left tiny information in Minh's body: numbness, pressure, imbalance, hesitation. Huyền Kha did not need power if he could make the next second arrive crooked.

Minh retreated one step, then another.

Gomboc hated retreat.

Thiên Phú calculated angles too quickly, trying to turn the stairwell into numbers.

Minh let both reactions pass and looked lower.

Huyền Kha's shoes avoided the wet step every time. His left shoulder turned before each pen attack. His eyes checked mirrors after contact, not before.

He was not reading Minh perfectly.

He was updating after every touch.

That meant the answer was not to become unreadable.

The answer was to feed him a wrong paragraph.

Once Minh saw the pattern, the stairwell lost some of its magic. Not all. Fear remained. Pain remained. But the room was no longer a monster's mouth. It was a design, and designs could be misread in both directions.

The real fight began when Minh stopped treating Huyền Kha like a weaker Lao.

Lao had filled space. Huyền Kha removed it.

Lao's pressure shouted through shoulders, hips, breath, the joy of impact. Huyền Kha's pressure appeared as absence: missing traction, delayed fingers, a reflection that made the wrong side feel open. He fought like a man who believed the body was a document to annotate.

Minh's first bruise came from a wall he had not meant to meet.

The second came from a stair edge after Huyền Kha touched a nerve near his elbow and turned grip into delay.

The third almost became serious.

Huyền Kha flicked the clinic pen toward the web of Minh's hand while stepping on the loose rubber strip. The movement asked Minh to either protect his hand and lose balance or keep balance and sacrifice the hand.

Minh chose a third answer badly.

He caught the pen point against his sleeve and took a shallow cut. Pain opened hot across his forearm. Gomboc surged with pleasure at having something simple to answer.

Minh gave ground instead.

The retreat looked like loss. Huyền Kha followed because the data said anger would dislike retreat.

That was the first wrong paragraph Minh fed him.

On the next landing, Minh stumbled on purpose with the injured side visible.

Huyền Kha adjusted to exploit the stumble.

Minh finally saw the rhythm beneath the analyst.

Blood from the sleeve cut warmed Minh's forearm. Huyền Kha saw him notice it and adjusted, expecting pain to narrow his next choice. Minh let the pain exist without negotiating with it. That was another of Lãnh Phong's lessons: the body could report damage without becoming commander.

The analyst had habits too. That realization steadied Minh. Huyền Kha wanted to be the one who watched, updated, corrected. But every observer created a pattern through what he chose to notice. Minh only had to survive long enough to read the watcher.

The watcher could be read. The observer could be observed. Minh held that thought like a handhold on the slickest part of the stairwell.
