Chapter 46 - The Pill Reaction

The cold in Minh's arm met the warmth in his chest.

They did not cancel.

They fed.

It felt like two strangers grabbing the same steering wheel.

For one breath, his body became too smooth.

Khí moved before intent.

Muscles answered before choice.

Hạ Yên's pills had taught his damaged pathways to accept flow.

Huyền Kha's cold poison pushed that flow into panic.

Minh rose without meaning to.

Huyền Kha's eyes sharpened.

"There."

There was no fear in his voice. Only confirmation.

Gomboc laughed like a door opening.

"Mine."

Minh crossed the alley faster than he had ever moved.

Huyền Kha dodged, but not cleanly.

Minh's palm grazed his sleeve and tore fabric.

For the first time, Huyền Kha retreated more than one step.

The retreat should have satisfied Minh.

It thrilled Gomboc instead.

He did not retreat in a straight line.

He kicked one of the fallen coins under Minh's next step and let the wet pavement do the work.

Minh's heel slid.

Only a little.

Enough to aim him toward the wall.

Pain vanished from Minh's body.

That was the warning.

No pain meant no border. No border meant Gomboc could call destruction freedom and almost sound right.

Thiên Phú shouted:

"Pain absent. Damage assessment compromised. Stop output."

Gomboc flooded the rest of Minh's body.

"He knows us. Break him until he forgets."

Minh saw the path.

Knee.

Throat.

Skull against concrete.

Clean.

Permanent.

Huyền Kha watched with fascination, not fear.

"Predatory construct dominant under cold-stress reaction," he murmured.

The words were not for Minh.

They were for the chart.

That was when Minh understood the true trap. If he lost control, Huyền Kha gained proof. If he restrained too cleanly, Huyền Kha gained proof. Every version of him was being invited to become evidence.

Something in Minh recoiled.

He was being written down while losing himself.

Not even his collapse belonged fully to him.

Then Lâm's voice returned.

Don't make my hand your excuse.

Not soft.

Angry.

Alive.

Minh slammed his own palm into the wall beside Huyền Kha's head instead of Huyền Kha's throat.

Concrete cracked.

Pain returned like fire.

The pain was ugly and immediate and completely his.

Minh gasped.

Good.

Pain meant body.

Body meant choice.

Huyền Kha's smile widened.

"Anchor reasserted."

Minh lifted his head.

"Stop calling him that."

For the first time, Huyền Kha said nothing.

Silence opened between them.

Minh used it before Huyền Kha could measure it.

Minh breathed.

Five things.

Wall. Blood. Pen. Rain. Enemy.

One intent.

My shape.

The reaction began after the alley, when danger was already gone.

At Dạ Nam, Minh tried to unwrap his hands and could not make his fingers obey. Heat moved under the skin in waves. The black cloth tightened as his knuckles swelled.

Lãnh Phong cut the wrap instead of pulling it. "How many doses?"

"One. Hạ Yên measured it."

"That was not my question."

Minh remembered the emergency vial in his pocket, the one he had taken when the ribs started hurting. Empty. He had used it without recording the time.

Hạ Yên arrived with her clinic bag and anger held so tightly it became precision. She placed cold packs beneath his arms, checked his pupils, and made him name objects in the room while she counted his pulse.

"Heavy bag. Blue stool. Exit sign."

"Again."

The hungry presence inside Minh surged toward movement. His leg tensed. Lãnh Phong placed one palm against the knee without forcing it down. Resistance would give the body something to fight.

Thiên Phú surfaced as a separate instruction: slow exhale, tongue behind teeth, do not bite. Gomboc offered no words to anyone else. It pulled at the body like an animal finding a loose door. Minh alone knew the difference.

To Hạ Yên and Lãnh Phong, the symptoms looked like the same primitive overdrive old fighters described in rumors: a body abandoning tomorrow to survive the present.

Minh named the objects again. On the third cycle he added one that was not in the room.

"Chart."

Hạ Yên's hand paused above the syringe. The reaction was not random. It had peaked after Huyền Kha forced adaptation under pain.

She wrote the time on Minh's cut wrap because no paper was closer. The black cloth became the first honest record of what the pill had cost.

The overdrive lasted nine minutes. Recovery lasted three days.

Minh could not close his hand around a spoon the next morning. His mother assumed fever and left rice porridge beside the bed before work. He waited until the door closed, then used both hands to lift the bowl.

At school, he avoided stairs because his calves trembled after six steps. Rumors called the stiffness confidence. Students saw a straighter posture and did not know it was the only way he could keep his knees from folding.

Hạ Yên checked him in an unused counseling room. She compared the time written on the cut wrap with his pulse and found a delayed second peak. The body had continued spending energy after Minh believed control had returned.

"No training," she said.

"Huyền Kha will not wait."

"Your muscles are not a vote."

She made him sign the rest order, then signed beneath him as the person responsible for prescribing the dose. The shared page changed their argument. Minh was not the only subject, and she was not allowed to hide behind clinical distance.

When he left, Hạ Yên stored the black wrap with the sample records. It smelled of sweat and disinfectant, an object carrying both the fighter's choice and the researcher's mistake.

For the rest of the day, Minh carried his spoon in the same pocket as the folded rest order. One object measured what his body could no longer do; the other proved somebody had finally written down the limit.

He obeyed the order for one full day. The next morning, he asked before training. Hạ Yên made him wait another hour and checked the shaking first.

Permission had entered the routine.
