Chapter 45 - Reading the Monster

Minh opened with restraint.

Huyền Kha punished him for it.

The first exchange taught Minh the shape of the fight: every mercy would be touched, named, and turned into a handle.

A tap to the wrist with the metal tip of the pen.

Not hard.

Not even painful at first.

Then Minh's fingers blurred with numbness.

He stepped back.

Huyền Kha was already there.

"Wrist first when you fear overcommitting."

The words landed before the next strike. That was part of the attack too. Huyền Kha did not only hit the body. He narrated the body until Minh began listening for himself from the outside.

Palm to ribs.

Cold spread under Minh's skin.

Dòng Lạnh.

The word arrived from Lãnh Phong's lesson as Minh's breath shortened.

Gomboc surged.

Minh swallowed it down and tried One Beat.

Huyền Kha shifted before Minh's palm rose.

The strike passed through empty air.

Two fingers touched Minh's shoulder.

His arm dropped half an inch.

Enough.

Huyền Kha's knee struck his thigh, folding the stance.

Minh hit the wall shoulder-first, right where a rusted clinic sign jutted from the concrete.

The sign edge tore his shirt and opened a hot line across his shoulder. Pain flashed white, then cold chased it away before it could become useful.

"When anger leads, your strike begins at the wrist," Huyền Kha said. "When control returns, it begins deeper, near the ribs. You are between them now."

Minh tasted blood.

"Shut up."

"Anger spike. Predictable."

Huyền Kha moved again.

Minh blocked, but the block met no force. False opening.

Khoảng Rỗng.

The real attack came from below: Huyền Kha kicked a plastic stool into Minh's shin path.

Minh's step shortened by instinct.

Not because the stool hurt.

Because the alley had suddenly become part of Huyền Kha's body.

Only then did the pen touch the side of his neck.

For a second, sound flattened.

Motorbikes became water.

His own heart became a drum underwater.

Thiên Phú barked:

"Retreat. Rebuild distance."

Gomboc surged from another place entirely:

"Forward. Tear the chart."

Minh hesitated.

Huyền Kha struck during the hesitation.

Not because he was stronger.

Because he had been waiting for both voices to speak.

Two coins dropped from his off hand and rang against the wet pavement, splitting Minh's eyes for half a second.

Ordinary coins. Bus fare. Lunch money. Two tiny sounds that dragged Minh's attention away from the hand that mattered.

Minh fell to one knee.

Outside the alley, Tân Phong watched from a roofline and clenched his teeth.

Thuận stood two streets away, facing Hạo Kỳ in silence.

No one could enter yet.

This was Minh's line.

Huyền Kha crouched before him.

"Anger, compassion, hesitation. You are not complicated."

He touched Minh's forehead lightly with the pen cap.

"Only untrained."

Minh wanted to spit blood in his face.

Instead, he forced himself to notice the ground.

Wet pavement. Coin near left knee. Stool behind right heel. Broken clinic sign above shoulder height.

The alley had become Huyền Kha's body.

It could become Minh's map too.

Huyền Kha entered the alley only after Minh had mapped it.

He wore no school jacket and carried no visible weapon. The quiet presentation forced Minh to supply the threat from memory. That was part of the method.

"You keep looking at objects," Huyền Kha said.

Minh shifted so the broken clinic sign remained above Huyền Kha's right shoulder. "Objects do not lie about where they are."

"People do. That is why objects need interpretation."

Huyền Kha kicked the plastic stool without warning. It skidded toward Minh's ankle while his hand came from the opposite side. Minh stepped over the stool and blocked high, exactly as the chart predicted. The second strike found his ribs.

Pain bent him toward the coin near his knee. Huyền Kha had placed it there. Even the useful detail was bait.

Minh stopped trying to solve each object separately. He looked at the alley as one system: puddle under Huyền Kha's rear foot, loose sign above, narrow exit behind Minh, delivery cart approaching from the street. Huyền Kha controlled the placed pieces. He did not control the cart.

Minh backed into its path. The driver shouted and braked. Crates shifted, forcing Huyền Kha to step onto the wet patch. Minh pulled the sign chain. Rusted metal dropped between them with a crash loud enough to open two windows above the alley.

Witnesses appeared. Huyền Kha's clean fight ended.

He could still have attacked. Instead he smiled at the new variables and withdrew through the clinic passage before anyone understood what they had seen.

Minh remained beside the spilled crates, one hand pressed to his ribs. He had escaped the chart by involving a civilian he could not fully protect. The solution worked and left a debt. That was the kind of answer Huyền Kha wanted him to learn.

The delivery driver demanded payment for the broken crates. Minh paid with the money he had saved for new training gloves.

At Dạ Nam, Lãnh Phong examined the bruised ribs and asked what the solution had cost. Minh described the witnesses, the fruit seller, and the driver's damaged goods.

"And?"

Minh looked at his bare hands. "I used people who did not know they were part of it."

"So did he."

The comparison hurt more than the ribs. Lãnh Phong made him repeat the alley problem with chairs standing in for civilians. Any escape that knocked one over failed, even if Minh landed the counter.

By the end, he could no longer chase the cleanest victory. He had to choose the route that preserved people outside the fight. Huyền Kha read monsters by what they would sacrifice. Minh began training on what he refused to spend.

Minh replaced the lost glove money by cleaning mats after closing. The gym owner assumed he was paying for extra training. Lãnh Phong knew the real debt and let the misunderstanding stand, another ordinary task carrying a consequence no spectator could applaud.

The debt changed his hands before it changed his skill.
