Chapter 33 - The First Night

The calm after the storm wasn't really calm. It was a busy, humming quiet. Alexander and Benjamin were gone, but you could still feel them working somewhere in the city, moving pieces on a giant board. The penthouse felt different now, charged with their energy.

Anna was always by his side. She fussed over him, bringing more tea, fluffy pillows, her eyes constantly checking him like she was afraid he'd fade away.

"I'm not made of glass, Anna," Cameron said, a small, tired smile on his face.

"After what they did to you? I'm treating you like the most precious, fragile glass in the world," she shot back, but her voice was soft. She sat next to him, pulling her feet up under her. "Tell me something. Something small. Something they didn't take from you."

Cameron thought. "I like to run," he said. "Early in the morning. When the streets are quiet. It's the only time things felt... clear and quiet."
