Chapter 83 - Jake the Advocate.

Rain's POV :

I shift in the bed, the mattress dipping softly beneath me, and the movement sends a dull ache blooming through my body, the kind that makes me aware of every muscle all at once. My thighs protest.

My shoulders feel tight.

Even my calves throb faintly when I stretch my feet beneath the covers.

Voss worked me to the bone yesterday, and I welcomed it.

Patients all day. Running between rooms. Learning at least four new procedures, fumbling through them once, twice, again, only for him to shake his head and tell me to do it over.

Exhaustion like that leaves no room for anything else, and that's why I loved it.

Every ounce of energy spent was an ounce not wasted thinking about a particular blue-eyed man who has made a habit of disappearing.

I'm done with him.

The thought settles heavy and deliberate.

If he's going to do this, if he's going to vanish and return without a word, then the next time he comes back he either talks or I leave.
