It's always been said: "Lancer has E-rank luck" and "Rider has many Noble Phantasms." Neither phrase is empty.
As Achilles revealed his True Name, he simultaneously handed the round shield to Artoria.
The story that had been heading somewhere tragic took a turn.
[Chat]: HUSBAND
[Chat]: I KNEW HE WAS THE BEST HUSBAND
[Recognizing]: Achilles — as in Achilles' heel Achilles?
[Answering]: that Achilles. if you ranked Greek heroes, Heracles is first and Achilles is second. he's not a minor figure.
[Different_Priority]: I don't care about the ranking. when he pulled out that shield, he became the greatest person in my life.
[Noble_Phantasm_Count]: wait — chariot, shield, and the spear he's been using this whole time. that's three Noble Phantasms.
[Responding]: he can have as many as he wants. he earned it.
[Noticing]: wait where is Maverick. why isn't Maverick in frame.
[Found_Him]: he's on the chariot. with everyone else.
[Visual]: Artoria surrounded by three grown adults on a vehicle built for one driver.
[Accurate_Description]: they look like spring onions packed into a bag.
[Also_Accurate]: they really do
The plan was set. Achilles ran — a Rider who happened to be faster on foot than most vehicles — while everyone else occupied the chariot. The vehicle was not built for four. The chat found this very funny, which served a purpose, because the last few minutes had needed something to dilute.
And then Lancer Artoria summoned the Holy Lance.
Even before the release words, the change in the white space was immediate. The geometry of the labyrinth's infinite walls began to lose confidence in themselves — a vibration, structural, the kind of disturbance that precedes something that has opinions about the space it occupies.
She raised the spiral lance. Light poured from it — not decorative light, load-bearing light.
"To the sky's other side, rush to the earth. It is the light wedge standing at the world's end — now, from the end, let the light of finality burst forth. This is the storm anchor that tears the sky and connects the ground!"
"Shine — O Spear of Finality!!!"
The spiral tip expanded outward. The white space ahead split into a void — the seam between the labyrinth's constructed reality and the real world.
Simultaneously, the shield answered.
"This is the world I see, I witness. Standing here now — repel all calamities! The small world that encompasses the firmament!!!"
Green light erupted from the shield's face — oceans and coastlines and civilizations built at the edge of water, the world Hephaestus had inscribed for Achilles carried outward in a single projection. It met the Pillar of the End's discharge with the authority of something built for exactly this.
The white labyrinth became a green ocean of life. Ten seconds.
The chariot and Achilles moved simultaneously. Maximum speed — not combat speed, escape speed, the speed of a hero who had been given a window and intended to use every fraction of it.
The void split wider. Through it — Ryudou Temple's ruins. Visible.
Artoria seized the lance and threw it with everything she had. The beam tore the void fully open.
The real world appeared.
Then A-bro jumped off the chariot.
Not forward. Down. Back. Toward the shrinking opening, toward the place where Lancer Artoria was still standing.
"What are you DOING—" Maverick grabbed for him and caught nothing.
Lancer Artoria caught him.
"You absolute idiot," she said. "Master."
"You liar." He wasn't trying to stop the tears. "I won't leave you here. If you disappear, my Holy Grail War ends anyway — so why shouldn't I stay?"
"Because you have a future and I don't." She looked at him directly. Actually looked, the way the haptic rendering made feel like something more than code. "I'm sorry for making an idiot my Servant."
"It was an honor," he said. "Being your Servant."
The Pillar of the End's full release was not something a Servant's Spirit Core survived. The shield had absorbed the worst of it. What remained had still been considerable. By the time Lancer Artoria caught A-bro, she was down to one arm and one leg.
She was smiling.
Then she wasn't anything.
[Chat]: she sacrificed herself anyway
[Noting]: Achilles said "I will not allow anyone to be sacrificed before my eyes"
[Also_Noting]: she sacrificed herself behind his back
[Destroyed]: those two sentences. that specific gap between them. I'm done.
[Watching]: A-bro is still crying and he's wearing the face of a middle-aged man and I am also crying
[About_Achilles]: wait — why is Achilles's heel bleeding. it was fine—
[Checking]: is he—
It was unclear whether Lancer Artoria had done it on purpose, by accident, or intentionally by accident.
As the group cleared the void — everyone out, the window closing — the lance's final trajectory had grazed Achilles's heel.
His heel. That heel. The one that, according to three thousand years of legend, was the only place on his body that mattered.
Achilles's face went still.
His Master had been watching everything without looking away. The Command Seal on her hand lit. Two Seals, forcibly binding the shattered components of his Spirit Core, holding the structure together through directed will.
Achilles stood. Breathed.
His apology to Lancer Artoria, he reflected, had diminished considerably.
Being extremely famous, it turned out, was not an unconditional advantage.
But they were out. Everyone out. And when he glanced at Artoria — Saber, who had exposed her True Name to deal with Ashiya Doman and now knew exactly what he was capable of — what he felt was closer to anticipation than dread.
He turned. Jumped to the front of the chariot. Pulled the reins.
The group of four rode out of the labyrinth from which no one could ever escape.
