Chapter 111: Orochimaru Is Practically the King of Ninja Scrolls
As it turned out, these meteorites were incredibly difficult to melt. Even when Kenichi used Sage Art Fire Release, he could only barely soften them. That alone made him even more curious about what, exactly, was hidden inside.
In the scientific community, meteorites were precious materials, especially the ones containing metal. Those were rare, expensive, and difficult to come by, which was exactly why Kenichi had been willing to pay for them.
After all, meteorites came from outer space. Sometimes, they contained traces of unknown elements, the kind of discovery that could stir up a huge argument in academia.
It was called a disturbance rather than a revolution for a simple reason. Meteorites were usually not large, which meant even if a new element existed inside them, it would only be present in tiny amounts. That made them valuable for observation and study, but not for widespread use.
No one could expect a meteorite that weighed only a few kilograms to supply the research needs of all humanity. In reality, whatever new element was inside might not even add up to a hundred grams.
"This thing is ridiculous…" Kenichi stared at the small sphere in his palm, the final product he had extracted after forcing the meteorite to melt.
It was not big at all, only about the size of a quail egg. Yet that tiny egg sized lump had already absorbed an enormous amount of chakra, even Sage Chakra, and its surface had not changed in the slightest.
Even so, Kenichi did not dare keep testing it inside the lab. If it suddenly reached some critical point and erupted, who knew what it would do. The teacher's laboratory did not have an explosion proof room.
So Kenichi planned to take the quail egg outside and test how much chakra it could absorb. He also needed to test whether it would explode after absorbing chakra, and if it did, whether there were warning signs and how long the delay would be.
All of that needed to be recorded. It would be extremely useful for future research. If possible, it would be even better to preserve the results properly, in case the material could be reused later.
"Kenichi, what is that in your hand?"
Just as Kenichi was about to leave with the quail egg, he ran straight into his teacher, Orochimaru.
Kenichi immediately felt uneasy.
After all, there was still Jiraiya's so called masterpiece inside his sealing scroll. If Orochimaru discovered that, things would get very interesting.
But Kenichi also noticed something else. Orochimaru was not wearing Yuki's face this time, he was using his own.
He was dressed casually, with a bag in his hand. Kenichi could not tell what was inside, but that was not the real issue.
The real issue was the man following behind him, a man with both arms intact, named Mara.
"Teacher, it is a meteorite I bought." Kenichi explained quickly, while also stealing a glance at Mara behind Orochimaru. "It has a very strong chakra absorption ability."
The moment Mara saw him, the man gave a flattering smile.
Aside from the fact that his body no longer triggered rejection, nothing about Mara seemed particularly special.
He was a ninja, yes, but he was facing a genin. Kenichi's strength was average, but it was still enough to read the room.
Kenichi gave a polite smile back. He vaguely remembered hearing about someone like this from the Naruto world, a character who appeared at some point, but he could not recall the name.
"Teacher, did your cloning technology make a breakthrough?" Kenichi asked, watching Orochimaru take the quail egg and study the small metal sphere with clear interest.
Before, Mara's left hand had been cut off and given to the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, to help Hiruzen recover. But now Mara had a left hand again.
That meant the cloning work had advanced.
"Yes, there has been some progress," Orochimaru replied calmly.
Kenichi almost wanted to complain in his head. His teacher's research speed was outrageous.
Ever since Kenichi became Orochimaru's disciple, Orochimaru had practically stopped doing anything else. Most of his time was spent on research, and the most terrifying part was that he often used Shadow Clones for it.
What was this?
This was the true king of scrolls.
While others rested, Orochimaru researched. While others fought for power, Orochimaru researched. Kenichi even suspected that during the Second Shinobi World War and the Third Shinobi World War, Orochimaru had still been doing research with Shadow Clones.
It was more terrifying than a roommate who promised to go play games, then secretly went to the library to study.
Kenichi had no idea how many Shadow Clones Orochimaru had scattered across the world doing experiments. All he knew was that, every so often, Orochimaru would casually pull out something that shattered his understanding, like the facial recognition device from before.
Kenichi always had the same thought.
If he ever explained the principles of nuclear weapons to Orochimaru, maybe one day his teacher would casually pull out a nuclear bomb like it was just another prototype.
"Kenichi, look over this experiment log, then store it properly," Orochimaru said, handing him a copy with the same casual tone as if he were passing over a grocery list.
Then Orochimaru left with Mara.
Danzo had been restless lately, constantly urging Orochimaru because his arm was not functioning well. Danzo wanted to replace it with an arm that would not react abnormally.
Danzo also stated that he would begin planning an operation against the Uchiha Clan as soon as possible, and that he should be able to deliver Orochimaru a large number of Sharingan.
Hearing that, Orochimaru decided to test whether Mara's body could withstand the power of the Sharingan.
Kenichi scratched his head, but he still opened the experiment log and began reading.
The moment he saw the first page, his pupils tightened, and his focus sharpened instantly.
[Research Log of the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path]
It was Orochimaru's research log on the Gedo Mazo.
Kenichi's mood lifted slightly.
The Gedo Mazo.
It might not look useful right now, but Kenichi knew exactly what it represented.
The Ten Tails, or the Divine Tree, was the source of all chakra, a monstrous existence connected to the Otsutsuki Clan. Kenichi was certain the Otsutsuki Clan had the ability to reproduce Divine Tree seeds.
That was why they planted trees across the universe.
Kenichi had already guessed that Nagato must have agreed to let Orochimaru research something in exchange for Orochimaru doing a task for him.
He just did not expect it to be the Divine Tree.
