Chapter 523 - Captured Alive

The orbital defenses were quickly brought under the control of Fabius's lackeys. The heavy gun batteries, dynamic arrays realigned, commenced a devastating, relentless bombardment of the hives sprawling across the world's surface below. Compared to standard ship-borne armaments, the sheer destructive yield of these macro-cannon installations was staggering. Deprived of orbital screening, an average Imperial world could not endure such a severe chastisement for long.

Fabius cared nothing for the ruin wrought upon the infrastructure of this segment of the Imperium. Humanity's unwashed masses were as thick as vermin in the dark corners of the galaxy; so long as he refrained from issuing a direct Exterminatus or detonating the hive-spires entirely, there would always be an ample harvest of test subjects.

For now, he needed only to bide his time until his underlings broke the world's defenders and allowed him to reap his toll. The gene-seed extracted from Alpha Primus contained bio-mysteries that intoxicated his brilliant mind. In recent weeks, the death toll from his ceaseless cataloging and genetic viviscriptions had eclipsed tens of thousands. Among those statistics were over a hundred Space Marines drawn from various Chapters, each laid bare upon Fabius's iron operating tables.

The vast majority of these specimens had succumbed to rapid genetic collapse, their cellular structures dissolving into slurry. Yet Fabius knew this setback was merely a temporary variance. His ultimate grand design was far grander than any ambition held by Belisarius Cawl. Within the sequence of that stolen gene-seed, Fabius caught tantalizing, phantom echoes of the Sangprimus Portum. That legendary artifact, containing the pure genetic blueprints of all twenty Primarchs, had long been an object of Fabius's desire.

Cawl had guarded it with frustratingly effective vigilance, but now, Fabius no longer required it. That self-proclaimed loyalist, that vital crutch to Guilliman and Archmagos of Mars, had been thoroughly parsed by Bile's intellect. They were cut from the identical cloth. Why else would Cawl dare to tread upon such forbidden, blasphemous thresholds? To utilize the genetic templates of every Primarch, to forge the foundations of the Primaris Marines, and to raise the Alpha Primus itself, it was the work of a kindred spirit.

"Hehe... Hahaha..."

Amused by his own deductions, Fabius pulled the gene-seed harvested from Alpha Primus from his heavy robes, turning the vial over in his hand. A cold, mocking chuckle slipped from his lips. Perhaps he was laughing at Cawl's agonizing over-caution, or at the structural rot of the Imperium. Perhaps he was mocking the sheer, monumental futility of the rotting carcass bound to the Golden Throne. The true evolution of the human form would be ignited by his hands alone; only through the uncompromising advancement of science could humanity find its singular path to salvation.

BOOM!

A violent explosion suddenly tore through the aft hull of the Pale Master.

"Report!" Fabius demanded over the vox, keeping his footing as the deck shuddered violently beneath him.

"Unknown! The primary reactor bays have sustained a catastrophic strike! We are dead in the water, My Lord!" a crew member responded, a wretched, stitched-together monstrosity of flesh and crude augmetics.

Under ordinary conditions, neither Chaos renegades nor Imperial warships maintained active void shields indefinitely while anchored in a secured zone. Yet even without shields, no conventional Imperial configuration should have been capable of punching clean through a capital ship's heavy armor plating and disabling its main reactors in a single, instantaneous salvo.

Nearby, the black veil of space tore open as a localized warp conduit collapsed. A silver-white mechanical armada materialized from the empyrean glare, its monolithic hulls reflecting the light of the distant star.

"My Lord! It is the Iron Men!"

Without power, the heavy battlecruiser's primary weapons systems were dark, its sub-light engines cold. The Pale Master had been transformed into an immobilized beast awaiting the slaughter. Fabius realized with absolute clarity that he had been hunted down.

A tempest of conflicting emotions welled within him. I did not expect them to move with such swiftness, he mused.

Stepping toward the reinforced viewport of the bridge, Fabius stared out at the advancing silver-white fleet. His clouded eyes flickered with an unreadable emotion. Perhaps... this too represents a form of salvation for the species.

Yet the tactics unfolding before him subverted what little data Fabius had gathered regarding these ancient automata. The silver-white fleet did not open up with a systematic broadside. Instead, they glided directly toward the crippled hull of the Pale Master.

The orbital defense batteries, still manned by Fabius's mortal chattel, desperately pivoted their macro-barrels to engage the incoming vessels. The response was instantaneous. A blinding array of pinpoint luminescence flared across the hulls of the Iron Men's mechanical warships. Countless lances of brilliant orange and blue energy cut through the void, utterly atomizing the orbital defense platforms and reducing the small moon serving as their bedrock to a pitted, crumbling ruin.

Down on the planet's surface, within the shattered outer perimeters of the hive cities, thousands of mechanical units materialized directly into the fray via warp-teleportation tech. The Iron Men wielded the dangerous physics of short-range warp displacement with absolute, terrifying mastery.

The horde of bio-engineered monstrosities that Fabius had so painstakingly cultivated proved agonizingly fragile against the high-frequency vibration of the machines' particle-scythes and phase-blades. Flesh-grafted shock troopers were efficiently dismembered, their mutated limbs severed before their heads were loathed from their shoulders.

Even the warped sonic weaponry of the Noise Marines found its lethal efficacy reduced to near-zero against these mechanical hulls. Against an army of flesh and blood, those agonizing frequencies could bypass conventional armor plating to liquefy internal organs or shatter a mortal's mind. Against the Adeptus Astartes, such cacophonies could disrupt focus, dulling an Emperor's Child's reflexes and giving the duelists of the Third Legion a decisive edge.

But the Iron Men possessed no flesh to distort.

Their internal quantum cores maintained a flawlessly stable command matrix, their chassis operating with chilling, mechanical indifference. The cold alloy warriors advanced directly into the psychic and sonic storms unleashed by the pink-clad, garish Traitor Astartes. High-frequency blades and particle beams reduced the sybarites of Slaanesh to neat piles of charred debris. The dark, shifting influence of Slaanesh swirled around the dying heretics, desperate to find purchase, but its metaphysical hooks found no purchase upon the cold logic of the machines.

The battle had been stripped of warp-born theater, reduced to a sterile exchange of raw martial metrics. Among the renegades' conventional arsenals, only multi-melta blasts directed at key joints yielded any measurable disruption; standard bolt shells did little more than scuff the lustrous finish of the mechanical hulls. The ground engagement concluded without a shred of tactical ambiguity.

Up within the drifting battlecruiser, the breach was complete.

The mechanical boarding parties swept through the companionways of the Pale Master, systematically purging the vessel of its biological aberrations. They flooded the command bridge, their heavy weapons locking onto the lone figure who stood waiting, arms resting upon his cane, prepared to meet his end.

"Bald cranium, standard terrestrial pattern male-pattern baldness. Skull-motif golden staff. Overcoat composed of cured human epidermis. Modified power armor matching the heraldry of the Third Legion Astartes, bearing profane markings of the warp. Query: Are you the individual designated as Fabius Bile?"

Fabius looked upon the six-legged automaton confronting him, his ancient, lined face tight with a mixture of disbelief and deep irritation. The sheer physical presence of these Armored Wardens was suffocating, but the clinical, almost insulting description of his person pricked the vanity of a creature who had defied the limits of life and death for ten millennia.

Before he could answer, Axion completed a rapid facial and biometric scan, confirming the target's identity with absolute certainty.

It was not a lack of will that stayed Fabius's hand from drawing his weapon, but rather his understanding of the Iron Men's pristine operational record. He harbored no illusions about his chances of escaping these unyielding blocks of living metal. Yet underneath his irritation, he felt no true panic regarding his personal survival.

Long before the fires of the Horus Heresy had consumed the galaxy, the Emperor's Sons had been hollowed out by a catastrophic genetic rot known as the Blight, a sickness that plagued the Terran-born neophytes of the Legion. Refusing to succumb to the executioner's axe like so many of his brothers, Fabius had falsified his medical data, and in the dark decades following the great rebellion, the mad geneticist had abandoned all moral restraints.

By capturing the elusive Aeldari of the craftworlds, studying their spirit stones, and reverse-engineering their psychoplastic consciousness-transfer networks, he had perfected a methodology of digital soul-transference. This allowed his original biological matrix to remain safely suspended in stasis while his active consciousness was uploaded into an endless succession of cloned bodies across the stars.

Throughout ten thousand years, his primary biological form had escaped the ultimate ravages of the Blight, though each cloned shell inevitably inherited the cellular decay after prolonged use. To Fabius, however, this was merely an administrative inconvenience, a matter of changing clothes. The only distinction between himself and Lucius the Eternal was that Fabius relied upon the clinical perfection of his own cloning vats, while Lucius relied upon the fickle whims of Chaos to gestate inside the flesh of his killers.

Suddenly, the heavy security doors of the ship's holding cells were forced open. A dozen Space Marine captives, dragged from various loyalist Chapters during Fabius's recent raids, lunged forward with righteous fury, eager to tear the architect of their torment apart with their bare hands.

Before they could bridge the distance, a wall of cold, silver-white metal intervened, boxing the loyalists back with absolute force.

"Maintain baseline emotional metrics. This individual is a high-priority captive of the Iron Men. Subsequent disciplinary protocols have not yet been ratified by central command. Do not strike the prisoner."

His expression a complex mask of grim irony, Fabius was escorted under heavy guard directly into his own inner sanctum.

Right before his eyes, the Iron Men began a meticulous, cataloged sweep of the laboratory facilities. Every piece of specialized surgical equipment, every stasis flask of exotic gene-seed, and every scrap of bio-data was systematically secured for transport.

They deployed direct data-tethers into his cogitators, pulling down ten millennia of experimental data logs. Fortunately for the longevity of the data, Fabius's deep-seated cynicism toward the powers of the warp meant his logic-engines were heavily shielded and scrubbed of scrap-code; no daemonic entities had corrupted the cogitator cores. Had the data been tainted by the chaotic madness of the empyrean, Axion would have ordered it purged without a second thought. Instead, the pristine secrets of the Primogenitor were downloaded into the machines' memory banks, bit by cold bit.
