Within an obscure, shadow-veiled expanse of void along the western fringes of Segmentum Ultima, a warped, grotesque silhouette of a Chaos vessel lay in ambush like a leviathan slumbering in the dark. Etched into the corrupted hull plating, fractured and pulsing with a faint, malevolent light, runes traced out its blasphemous name: Pale Master.
"Another failure! Damn it all! The test subjects are insufficient. Go, harvest more."
The speaker's iconic, hairless scalp gleamed under the harsh, artificial illumination of the chamber. From within the sterile yet deeply unsettling laboratory, the voice of Fabius Bile rang out, sharp and dripping with cold irritation.
Rows of meticulously arranged racks held countless test tubes and chemical vials, refracting the frigid glare of the lumens. Within glass stasis jars, fragments of harvested flesh suspended in preservation fluids assumed unnatural, shifting configurations, a silent testament to the unimaginable agony and violent transmutations endured by their former hosts.
Before a massive, central surgical altar stood the towering figure, draped in a stained, heavy apothecary's smock. Beneath the tattered fabric, flashes of ornate, sinister purple power armor glinted, a mocking reflection of the dark depths of the Warp. The Eight-Pointed Star of Chaos was emblazoned prominently upon his pauldrons, a stark and defiant insult to the distant authority of the Emperor.
Beneath the shadowless surgical lamps of the primary operating table, Fabius's unhelmeted visage appeared stark and severe. Thick, subdermal cables and neural interfaces snaked across his neck, casting stark shadows that made him resemble a twisted, living fortress of forbidden biomechanism torn from a nightmare. His ash-grey smock was caked with layers of dried bio-fluids, exotic chemical stains, and shifting chaotic runes that wriggled and flickered across the fabric as if possessed by a malicious sentience. Along the hem of the coat, hallucinatory countenances of distorted faces continually coalesced and dissolved, the trapped souls of innocent victims bound to his gear, screaming silently in a perpetual, agonizing echo of their final mortal moments.
Mounted to Fabius's power pack was his chirurgeon, a complex harness of secondary mechanical limbs. Though it mirrored the machineries of an Iron Father or a Tech-Marine, its components were inherently blasphemous. The snapping appendages were laden with terrifying instruments: blood-encrusted bone-saws, glowing hypodermic needles filled with glowing tethers, and a chaotic array of flesh-sampling drills. The sheer, frantic cruelty of this mechanical monstrosity was so profound that even the most depraved Ork Painboy would have marvelled at its bloody efficiency, readily acknowledging its grisly "professionalism."
"Lord Fabius, the nearest Imperial worlds are at a considerable distance from our current coordinates," a misshapen, flesh-warped vat-guard muttered, lowering his head anxiously as he held a data-slate. His voice trembled, thin and fragile within the oppressive atmosphere of the laboratory.
"Do not make me repeat myself, lest you find yourself on the operating table as the next subject," Fabius replied, his tone dropping to a razor-sharp, freezing register that brooked no negotiation.
The guard shuddered violently, struck by an invisible wave of dread. Saluting in frantic, jerky motions, he bolted from the laboratory as if fleeing an impending cataclysm.
As the guard scrambled away, Fabius slowly extended a gauntleted hand, lifting a heavy stasis jar from the primary console. His rheumy, milky eyes suddenly flared with a manic, obsessive fire as he stared intently at the pulsating organ suspended within the fluid.
It was a gene-seed harvested from a Primaris Astartes, and to Fabius, it was a skeleton key to infinite evolutionary possibilities.
"Cawl... I did not expect you to fashion something so intriguing. I truly cannot fathom what that rotting Corpse-Emperor was thinking back then," Fabius murmured under his breath, his voice laced with deep contempt and mockery. "Such dogmatic stagnation. A tragic, pathetic waste of pristine genetic resource."
In the high orbit of the targeted Imperial world, dark tides of Chaos sorcery swelled across the void, eating away at reality with terrifying speed. Utilizing warp-teleportation, Saqqara Ur-Damak Thresh of the Word Bearers had already materialized within an orbital defense station anchored to the planet's moon, acting as the architect for a desecrated ritual.
Blasphemous incantations poured from his lips as he swung an icon of corrupted devotion that bled an unholy luminescence. As the ritual reached its zenith, tears ripped open across the fabric of space, and hordes of gibbering daemons spilled into the real world.
The manifestation of these warp-entities instantly plunged the orbital station into absolute, blood-drenched anarchy.
"Has the distress signal been broadcast?!" an auxiliary squad sergeant roared over the din, shouting toward a terrified Planetary Defence Force trooper.
"It's away!" the trooper yelled back.
But before the soldier could draw another breath, a bizarre, ear-piercing cacophony tore through the bulkhead.
"Kee-keeeeee!"
The sound was sharp, discordant, and agonizing, vibrating directly into the marrow of their bones and freezing the blood in their veins.
A flash of sickening, kaleidoscopic light erupted, and both men were instantly vaporized into a mist of blood and shattered bone.
Through the red haze bounded a warrior of the Emperor's Children, clad in garish pink power armor, his helm adorned with grotesque sonic enhancers and trailing silk top-knots. The Heretic Astartes moved in a jerking, spasmodic dance, cradling a stylized weapon of profane design.
His sonic blaster unleashed relentless, concussive waves of weaponized noise, each screeching note acting like a physical blade that shredded the neural pathways and eardrums of everyone nearby.
To these isolated, poorly trained PDF troopers, the specific heraldry of the Traitor Legions meant nothing. However, when the horrific pict-feeds of the slaughter were transmitted down to the planet below, the localized Ordo Hereticus cells moved with immediate, cold efficiency. Scouring ancient, dust-laden archives, they quickly cross-referenced the tactical data and identified the attackers: Noise Marines, the debased specialists of the fractured Third Legion.
On the far side of the defense station, a pack of massive, muscle-bound vat-brutes brandished flesh-hooks and exotic instruments of torture, hacking their way through the remaining PDF lines. The brutes bellowed beast-like roars, their eyes entirely hollowed out by the thrill of the slaughter, leaving a trail of dismembered bodies in their wake.
Upon the bridge of his flagship, the Pale Master, Fabius Bile looked out into the void, watching the orbital defense platforms blossom into silent, fiery blooms of detonation. A cold, detached smile touched his thin lips.
"Miserable cattle. Their lives are as fragile as embers in a gale. Yet, their fragility makes them the perfect canvas for my work; I shall extract the absolute limits of mortality from their marrow. With their genes and their blood, I will fashion a new paradigm that eclipses the grandest designs of the Emperor. They shall be the stepping stones to my throne of perfection, and perhaps, in millennia to come, the galaxy will finally recognize their worth."
His voice was low, carrying the absolute, unshakeable certainty of a scientist rewriting the fate of species.
Such compliance actions were routine for the forces under Fabius's command. They would break a world through calculated, agonizing terror, fill the holding pens with prime specimens, and leave the remaining population to be slaughtered or offered up to the tides of the Warp.
As one of the most infamous geneticists in the galaxy, Fabius possessed infinite leverage to draw blade-mercenaries to his banner. For a mere fraction of his biochemical secrets or a single vial of stabilized gene-agents, he could easily lease an army large enough to scour an entire Space Marine Chapter and its homeworld from existence.
Furthermore, Fabius commanded a vast, terrifying host of his own: his Terata, an army of engineered mutants and vat-grown monstrosities.
These misshapen, hulking abominations possessed a feral savagery that far outmatched the common soldiery of the Astra Militarum. Under the direct, brutal command of Igori, they surged onto the Imperial world like a grey tide, harvesting a continuous, screaming stream of raw materials for Fabius's endless, mad crucibles, plunging yet another Imperial system into a nightmare of agony and ruin.
