Chapter 38: The World Two Years Later
The next morning, at the top of Ring Tree Island, the sun had just risen halfway above the horizon.
Uncle Witt, Uncle Kate, Luo Han, and Cole stood in a square formation.
"Luo Han, Cole, today we're going to start teaching you the basics of Haki," Uncle Witt said.
"There are three main types of Haki: Armament Haki, Observation Haki, and Conqueror's Haki."
Uncle Witt gave Luo Han a deliberate glance.
"Out of the three, Luo Han has already awakened two—everything except Armament Haki."
"What?! Han-ge already has two?! That's amazing!" Cole exclaimed.
"Don't interrupt, Cole. Listen carefully," Uncle Witt said.
"Let's start with Armament Haki. When your physical strength reaches a certain level, this power hidden within your body can be awakened."
As he spoke, Uncle Witt raised his arm. An invisible force flowed out from within, covering his arm like a shield.
"This is Armament Haki. It forms a protective, unseen armor that enhances both attack and defense. It also allows you to hit Logia-type Devil Fruit users and defend against certain special powers."
"As for Observation Haki," Uncle Kate continued, "it usually allows you to sense auras within a certain range and even predict short-term movements."
"Some rare users have special variants—like seeing into the future or reading people's emotions.
Luo Han's version is one of those special kinds."
He looked at Luo Han with a hint of envy and pride in his eyes.
"Conqueror's Haki, however, is innate—it's a power one is born with.
Its main known effect is intimidation. Those with weak willpower can be knocked unconscious just by its presence."
Uncle Witt went on, "Luo Han, from now on you'll train in the Six Powers and Armament Haki with me."
...
Cole, who had been listening attentively, looked confused when that was all that was said.
"Wait—what about me? I want to learn Haki too!" Cole exclaimed.
"Haha! Cole, you'll train with me, and Luo Han with your dad," Uncle Kate said.
"Oh! That's fine—as long as I get to learn," Cole replied, satisfied.
"Of course, for now the focus is still on strengthening your body. Once that's high enough, Armament Haki will be much easier to awaken," Uncle Witt added.
"This afternoon, we'll attack you both using Armament Haki, so you can experience its force firsthand and hopefully trigger your own awakening.
Cole, you'll wear a blindfold while we hit you—that'll help train your Observation Haki."
Cole thought about it—he wasn't sure why being blindfolded would help.
"Haha! Little Cole, Observation Haki works by sharpening instinct and perception. Blinding your eyes helps strengthen that internal sense."
"Really? Well, as long as it works, I'm in! Haha!" Cole laughed.
"Alright, I'll take Luo Han to the first level for physique training," Uncle Witt said.
He and Luo Han headed off to the training plaza.
"We should go too. There's still a pile of roasted Sea King meat left from yesterday," Uncle Kate said.
Cole immediately perked up at the mention of food and followed happily.
Thus began their routine: physique training in the morning, Haki in the afternoon.
At night, Luo Han studied the development of his Spiritual Fruit.
He had already unlocked two abilities: Telekinesis and Kyōka Suigetsu.
Yes—he had cheekily named his five-sense override ability after Aizen's Zanpakutō release in Bleach.
To be honest, Luo Han felt Kyōka Suigetsu suited him more than Telekinesis.
After all, he came from a peaceful modern world.
Kyōka Suigetsu was way cooler—it even seemed more helpful for ending his single status. At least, overriding the five senses had certain advantages over Telekinesis…
Luo Han quickly shook his head. He was obviously drifting into questionable territory again.
Clearly, being single was still a mental hurdle he couldn't overcome.
...
Time flew by. Two years passed.
Luo Han had now elevated his physical talent to match that of the eel-like super-giant Sea King.
The next goal was to continue increasing his raw physical power.
He had grown to 2.8 meters tall—he could've gone taller, but that would make certain things inconvenient.
Like Cole, for example—Cole had exploded to seven meters tall. Even Uncle Witt was getting headaches over it.
At this rate, Cole's only romantic prospects might look like Big Mom…
Ugh! Luo Han shuddered at the thought.
Thank goodness most One Piece women had normal body types, except for maybe that one mermaid princess.
And Luo Han wasn't even interested in mermaids anyway. He never understood why so many transmigrators in fanfics wanted to marry her. Were they actually happy afterward? He doubted it.
Over the past two years, the Rocks Pirates had grown rapidly, and the world entered a phase of upheaval.
Especially the news industry.
Every week, a News Coo now passed by Ring Tree Island.
Through their newspapers, Luo Han had kept up with current events.
Since Rocks' "New World" declaration two years ago, his crew had conquered island after island—join or be destroyed.
After witnessing Rocks' overwhelming power and ambition, many famous pirates joined him.
Whitebeard, Golden Lion, Big Mom, Kaido—they had all joined the Rocks Pirates for various reasons.
Today, two years later, the "New World" concept had taken root globally, thanks to the Rocks crew's successive victories.
Even the World Government had launched a campaign to reclaim the New World and bring it under their control.
Meanwhile, the Roger Pirates had also entered the New World, gaining a small but growing reputation.
Unlike most pirates, they had not joined the Rocks Pirates.
At the same time, new-generation Marines—led by Garp, Sengoku, and Zephyr—began battling in the New World too.
The real battle for supremacy was now underway.
Reading all this, Luo Han couldn't help but feel fired up.
He clenched his fists, sensing the strength of his own Haki.
Just two more years.
By then, he'd be able to use Armament Haki across his entire body.
He wouldn't forget his other abilities either—Telekinesis and Kyōka Suigetsu would remain crucial.
That afternoon, on the island's peak—
"Luo Han! Come on, it's time for your training match with Cole," Uncle Witt said.
Uncle Kate smiled beside him.
Two years in, Luo Han and Cole no longer needed their mentors to spar with.
"Come at me, Cole! I want to see how far your Observation Haki has come," Luo Han said.
The two of them began their match atop the island.
Shave! Luo Han muttered as he vanished, instantly dashing toward Cole.
Cole spun around and punched at his right, perfectly predicting Luo Han's movement—clearly his Observation Haki was sharp.
Bang! Their fists collided, and a visible shockwave erupted.
Pebbles scattered in all directions, forming a ring.
Szzzz… Sparks hissed between their fists, like grinding steel.
Looking at Luo Han's trembling arm, equal to his own, Cole was a bit surprised.
After all, Luo Han wasn't even using Telekinesis—he was fighting Cole purely with his physical strength.
