In the morning of day 212, Monica and Steffi woke early, had a quick energizing meal, and sat together to continue the NanoCam footage.
The eighth video began with the girl filming an older woman who was sitting behind a desk. On the desk sat a thin laptop connected to wires pulled from holes in the walls of the room.
"Dr. Jade, how are we doing?" the girl asked.
"we have finally established a connection with the inside," dr. Jade said, smiling.
"So now we can talk to them?"
"Yes jenny. That's what I meant."
On the laptop's transparent screen, a signal flickered. Excitement showed on Dr. Jade's face. She spoke to the device. "Hello? Is anyone there? Hello?". No response came. She tried again. And again. Still nothing.
Jenny tried next. "Is anyone there? Can you hear us?"
This time, a voice came back. A young woman, stuttering. "Oh, yes. Yes I'm here. Just—just wait, I'll get someone."
Then, the video cut off.
It started again. Jenny explained, "Sorry guys. Had to change the battery."
The NanoCam is very small. So, one of the disadvantages that comes with that is that it's very hard to change the batteries. It takes about 4 minutes. But, lasts months per full charge.
Now, several men were on the other end. Dr. Jade asked, "When do we start packing?"
A man's voice replied firmly. Monica and Steffi recognized it instantly. It was Egon.
"Not yet." he said. "We have developed some sort of a system here. Nothing moves without council approval."
"How long will that take?" Dr. Jade asked.
"Best case? Two days. But the problem is the people. They've been quite wary after recent incidents. I'm afraid we can't do it without a ballot."
"Okay, we can wait a few days." Dr. Jade said.
The video ended there.
