Chapter 23 - Chapter 22: Jealousy, Uncomfortable Truths, and The S Class trials

Hey Hope yall enjoy and dont mind that i increased the pace for the next few chapters.

Erza and Mira, who had been mid-spar in the brawl—Erza with a requipped sword clashing against Mira's partial Satan Soul arm—finally paused as Wendy's joyful yell echoed through the hall. "Varion!" The name cut through the noise, and both girls turned, their rivalry forgotten for a split second as they spotted him.

Their eyes locked on him first—relief and warmth flickering in their expressions—but then slid to the new blonde girl clinging to his hand with a beaming smile. Erza's brow twitched, her grip tightening on her sword hilt, while Mira's demonic aura flared slightly before she reined it in. Jealousy boiled inside them like a storm, who was this girl, holding his hand like she owned it?, but they kept it contained, not wanting to look petty or bad in front of Varion. With forced smiles, they walked over, their stares drilling into Lucy like lasers, trying to vaporize her with sheer intensity alone.

"Varion," Erza said, her voice calm but her eyes never leaving Lucy, the glare sharp enough to cut glass. "You're back. And… you brought friends?"

Mira crossed her arms, leaning slightly closer to Varion as she fixed Lucy with a sweet but deadly smile, her blue eyes narrowed. "Yeah, welcome back. Who's the new girl?"

Varion blinked at the tension but smiled obliviously. "This is Lucy Heartfilia—and Brandish u. Lucy's the one I told you about from the estate. She's joining the guild."

Lucy sweat-dropped under the combined stares, her hand still in Varion's as she waved awkwardly. "H-Hi! Nice to meet you!"

Erza and Mira's smiles didn't reach their eyes, the jealousy simmering just below the surface as they nodded politely, but the vaporizing glares never wavered.

Mira and Erza, standing side by side, shared a quick look—eyes narrowing in silent agreement, a mix of rivalry and curiosity flashing between them. "We should get to know Lucy better," Erza said suddenly, her tone overly polite but with an edge, stepping forward.

Mira nodded, a sweet smile masking her intent. "Yeah, let's chat. Come on, Lucy!"

Before Lucy could react, the two girls linked arms with her on either side—Mira on the left, Erza on the right—and dragged her away comically toward a corner table, Lucy's feet skidding slightly on the floor as she yelped in surprise. "W-Wait, what? I was talking to—!"

Brandish watched with a raised eyebrow, her lazy smile turning wary. "That looks… intense. Better follow, just in case things get heated." She strolled after them casually, hands in her pockets, ready to intervene if the "chat" turned into another catfight.

Varion sweat-dropped, his eyes wide as he watched the scene unfold, Lucy's confused protests fading as the girls pulled her out of sight. "Well… at least they're getting along?" he muttered to himself, rubbing the back of his neck.

He didn't have time to ponder it further. The kids swarmed him like a pack of wolves—Natsu yelling "Charge!" at the top of his lungs as he leaped onto Varion's back, arms locking around his neck. "Gotcha, big bro!"

Sting piled on next, grabbing an arm with a grin. "Pile on! We got him now!"

Lisanna and Wendy decided to join in too—Lisanna giggling as she hugged Varion's leg, Wendy latching onto the other with a determined "Me too!"

Gajeel smirked from behind, his iron laugh echoing—"Gihee!"—as he extended an iron leg to trip Varion from behind.

Varion let it happen, pretending to struggle with a laugh as he toppled to the ground under the weight of the kids, sprawled on the floor in a heap of limbs and laughter. They play-fought to restrain him—Natsu pinning an arm, Sting sitting on his back, Wendy and Lisanna holding his legs, Gajeel adding an iron cuff for good measure—cheering like they'd won a war.

Varion ignored what just happened with the girls, thinking they'd be fine—what could go wrong? He "fought" back gently, tickling Wendy to make her squeal, the guild watching with amusement.

Lucy, Erza, and Mira stood in the small courtyard behind the Fairy Tail guild hall, the afternoon sun casting long shadows across the grass. Brandish leaned against the wall nearby, arms crossed, her lazy expression hiding a watchful eye. The "chat" had started innocently enough—Erza and Mira welcoming Lucy with overly sweet smiles that didn't reach their eyes—but it quickly escalated, their jealousy boiling over as they tried to intimidate the new girl.

"So, Lucy," Erza said, her voice stern as she stepped closer, arms crossed over her chest. "You seem awfully… attached to Varion. Holding his hand like that. What are your intentions?"

Mira nodded, her blue eyes narrowing as she flanked Erza, her cloak swirling slightly. "Yeah, you just show up and think you can cling to him?"

Lucy, to their surprise, didn't back down. Her cheeks flushed, but she straightened her blue dress and met their glares head-on, her hand on her hip. "My intentions? He's my friend! And if I like him, that's my business. What about you two— are you fighting over him like he's a prize?"

Erza's brow twitched. "Friend? You were practically hanging off him!"

Mira leaned in. "And we're not fighting over him — you're the one barging in!"

The argument heated up, voices rising as they closed in on Lucy, the air crackling with tension—Erza's magic faintly glowing, Mira's demonic aura flickering. Lucy held her ground, summoning small sparks of celestial magic in her palm as a warning. It was building into a full catfight, fists clenching, foreheads nearly butting.

All of a sudden, a bright flash enveloped them—Erza, Mira, and Lucy shrinking down to the size of dolls in an instant, their voices turning high-pitched and squeaky as they tumbled onto the grass. Brandish stepped forward, her Shrink magic dissipating from her hand with a lazy wave, her green hair swaying as she looked down at them.

"Are you all ready to act more reasonably now?" Brandish asked, her tone bored but firm. "And actually talk through the issue of all of you liking Varion?"

The three tiny girls stammered, their faces turning various shades of red—Mira denying it loudly in her squeaky voice, "I-I don't like him like that! He's just… nice!" Erza blushing bright red, her tiny armor clinking as she looked away without a word, too flustered to speak. Lucy just blushed deeply, fidgeting but not denying it, her ponytail drooping slightly.

Brandish sighed, crouching down to their level. "You're all being dumb."

The girls looked at her in surprise, their squeaks overlapping—"What?" "Hey!" "Dumb?!"

She rolled her eyes. "It's obvious from an outside view—you all like him, and he likes you back. All three of you. Admitting he's a good guy… given more time, I might fall for him too, honestly."

They stammered more, blushes intensifying. "H-He does?" Mira squeaked. "How do you know?" Erza mumbled, red as her hair.

Brandish shrugged lazily. "The way he looks at you, talks about you—it's clear. But he doesn't seem like the type to choose one over the others. He's waiting for something, or maybe just letting things build naturally. So you'll probably have to get used to each other. He's raised by a dragon remember he most definitely has different views on thing then normal humans "

The doll-sized girls thought it over, grumbling tiny complaints—"No way…" "But…" "That's not fair…"—but the idea sank in. Such situations weren't unheard of in Fiore, just rare—mages with multiple partners, especially in guilds where bonds ran deep. They exchanged awkward glances, the jealousy simmering but not exploding, as Brandish watched with amusement.

Brandish crossed her arms, looking down at the three tiny girls with her usual lazy expression, though a hint of amusement twinkled in her eyes. "Look, it's not my job to convince you three. I'm just here to make sure you don't start fighting and scratch each other's eyes out. Work it out or don't—but no killing eachother."

The doll-sized Erza, Mira, and Lucy grumbled in their squeaky voices, not happy with the idea at all—Mira huffing "As if I'd share," Erza muttering "This is ridiculous," and Lucy whispering "But he's… mine?" with a pout. The notion of "sharing" Varion felt wrong, unfair, like a bad compromise none of them wanted. They crossed their tiny arms, glaring at each other again, the jealousy still simmering despite Brandish's words.

With a sigh, Brandish waved her hand, her Shrink magic reversing in a flash of light. The three girls popped back to normal size, stumbling slightly as they readjusted, landing on the grass with soft thuds. Erza straightened her skirt immediately, her face still red but her expression shifting to one of reluctant composure. She took a deep breath, putting aside her feelings for the moment—Fairy Tail was about family, not rivalry. "Lucy… I apologize for my actions earlier. That was unbecoming. Welcome to Fairy Tail—if you're joining us."

Lucy, rubbing her arm and blushed at her behavior, her own jealousy easing a fraction at the sincere tone. "I'm sorry too. I didn't mean to… step on any toes. Thanks for the welcome."

They both turned to Mira expectantly, waiting for her to chime in. Mira crossed her arms tighter, her white hair falling over one eye as she huffed and turned away from them, staring at the guild wall. "Whatever," she muttered, her cheeks pink but her tsundere side winning out. She wasn't ready to admit defeat—or share welcomes—just yet.

Brandish rolled her eyes. "Progress, I guess."

The tension broke slowly as they started talking, Erza and Mira (grudgingly at first) getting to know Lucy and Brandish more. Erza leaned against the wall, her voice steady. "So, Lucy—what's your magic? Varion mentioned celestial spirits?"

Lucy perked up, pulling out her keys with a smile. "Yeah! I have three golden ones now—Aquarius, Virgo, Taurus. My Mom gave them to me. The others are scattered, but I'll find them. Brandish here does Shrink magic—super cool for battles!"

Brandish shrugged lazily. "It's handy. Make enemies tiny, step on 'em. Easy."

Mira, still turned half-away but listening, finally glanced back. "Shrink magic? That's… interesting. Could be useful, it certainly worked against us." Her tone was reluctant, but genuine curiosity crept in.

Erza nodded. "Fairy Tail's full of unique mages. We've got fire eaters, ice makers, card readers—you'll fit right in. The guild's like a big family—fights happen, but we always have each other's backs. Master Makarov makes sure of that."

Lucy smiled, warming to them as the conversation flowed. "It sounds amazing. Varion's told me a bit—about the kids, the training. I can't wait to meet everyone."

Mira uncrossed her arms slightly. "The kids are cute. Wendy's a sweetheart. Natsu's a hothead, and sting is way to energetic."

Erza added, "And the jobs—adventures all over Fiore. You'll grow strong here."

As they talked more—sharing stories of past missions , favorite foods, and guild quirks, the initial jealousy faded. They genuinely started liking each other as people and potential guildmates, laughter breaking through as Mira teased Erza about her armor, and Lucy bonded over shared book interests with them both.

-Over with varion-

Varion finally freed himself from the kids' playful "attack", laughing as he pried Natsu's arms from around his neck and set Wendy down gently, her giggles still bubbling. Sting and Rogue rolled off his back with grins, Gajeel crossing his arms but smirking, Elfman cheering from the sidelines where they'd joined in the fun. The guild members watched with amusement, a few clapping at the "victory" over the big brother.

He ruffled Natsu's pink hair, catching his breath. "Alright, alright—you got me good that time. Have you all been good while I was gone? Anything exciting happen?"

The kids nodded quickly, their faces lighting up as they crowded around him again, words tumbling out in an excited overlap.

"Yeah, we were good!" Wendy said first, beaming up at him. "Mostly…"

Natsu jumped in. "We had a huge spar yesterday! I totally beat Gray's butt"

Sting elbowed him. "You mean you set the backyard on fire again. Erza had to put it out!"

Rogue nodded quietly. "It was fun. Learned a new shadow move."

Gajeel grunted. "Tch, yeah. And Elfman cried when he lost arm-wrestling to me."

Elfman sniffled from the side. "I-I didn't cry! It was sweat!"

Lisanna giggled. "We played tag with my Take Over—I turned into a bird and flew away! Wendy almost caught me with her wind!"

Wendy blushed proudly. "It was close!"

Varion smiled warmly, listening as they shared more stories—pranks on Macao, Wendy helping Levy organize books , and a "secret mission" to sneak snacks from the bar that Cana caught but let slide with a wink. The tales painted a picture of joyful chaos, the kids thriving in their new home.

Then, Rouge quietly spoke up. "Umm, some guys showed up at the house yesterday. They said they were sent to remodel it and added rooms and stuff. It was weird. They said they'd be done around now."

Varion blinked, surprise flickering across his face as he remembered the Heartfilias' casual offer to expand the house. "Remodel? Already?"

Natsu nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah! The backyard's bigger too! We can have epic fights now!"

The other kids chimed in with agreement, excited about the changes. Varion chuckled, shaking his head. "Let's head home and check it out."

The girls—Erza, Mira, and Lucy—came in from the back courtyard, their earlier tension eased into tentative camaraderie after Brandish's intervention. Brandish trailed behind with her lazy stride, smirking at the trio's awkward peace. They spotted Varion at the bar, chatting with the kids while they clustered around him munching on snacks.

Varion noticed them enter and waved them over, his soft smile returning. "Hey—perfect timing. The kids mentioned the remodel's done. I'm taking them to check it out. You four wanna come? See the new setup?"

Erza nodded immediately, her stern expression softening as she glanced at him. "I'd like that. It's been a while since I saw the house."

Mira crossed her arms, a faint blush on her cheeks. "Sure. Might as well make sure it's not falling apart."

Lucy beamed, linking her arm with Varion's without thinking. "Yes! I want to see where I'll be staying!"

Brandish shrugged. "Sureee. Nothing better to do."

The group headed out, the kids leading the way with excited chatter—Wendy holding Lisanna's hand, Natsu and Sting shoving each other playfully, Rogue and Elfman following quietly, Gajeel grumbling but keeping pace. Varion walked in the middle, Erza and Mira on either side of him, Lucy walked beside Brandish bringing up the rear talking about how much fun this will be.

As they approached the house on the outskirts, Varion slowed, his eyes widening. It was transformed—bigger than before, the brick structure expanded with new wings on either side, a larger porch wrapping around, and the backyard stretched further into the woods. Fresh paint gleamed, windows sparkled, and it looked like a small mansion now, not the modest home he'd bought. "What… how?" he muttered, scratching his head. "They did all this in two days? That's impossible."

The kids rushed forward with whoops. "It's huge!" Natsu yelled.

Lucy giggled. "The people dad use work fast!"

Erza inspected the structure. "Impressive craftsmanship."

Mira nodded, impressed despite herself. "Yeah… not bad."

Brandish smirked. "Magic money, I guess."

Varion just stared, wondering how the Heartfilias' builders had pulled off such a quick transformation—probably high-level construction magic, but still… It was mind-boggling.

"Well lets go explore and get you 2 settled in." varion said while looking and lucy and brandish. "And if you want to, you can move in as well Erza you practically live here already."

"I will take you up on that offer and wouldn't mind spending more time with you–, I mean here with everyone." she said and blushed heavily due to the slip up.

-4 month time skip-

Over the next four months, life in Fairy Tail wove itself into a vibrant tapestry of chaos and growth for Varion and his expanding group/family. The house expansion builders from the Heartfilias had transformed the modest home into a spacious haven with ten new rooms added on, a dedicated training hall where the kids could spar without fear of breaking walls, and a cozy library that Levy helped stock with books on magic. The backyard grew too, now dotted with practice dummies and a small garden where they can relax. Varion often sat on the porch at dawn, watching the changes settle, a sense of stability he'd craved since the Gate finally took root.

The slayers progressed in leaps—Wendy's healing magic mending scrapes from daily brawls, Natsu's flames growing hotter during "play" fights that left scorch marks on the grass, Sting and Rogue syncing their light and shadow in seamless combos during tag games that doubled as drills. Gajeel bulked up his iron forms, grumbling less as memories flickered back in dreams.

Lucy and Brandish became part of the rhythm too—Lucy taking on beginner missions, her celestial spirits becoming more in sync with her, while Brandish's Shrink magic turned fights into comedy, reducing enemies to toys mid-battle. Letters flew back and forth to the Heartfilias weekly, Lucy's handwriting detailing her progress—summoning Virgo for chores, training and visits monthly kept her in touch.

Varion's instincts simmered beneath it all, the pulls toward Erza, Mira, and Lucy growing in subtle ways—a shared training session with Erza where their hands brushed during a spar, leaving her blushing; helping Mira refine her Satan Soul, her grateful hugs lingering a second longer; Lucy "accidentally" linking their arms and leaning on him during walks. The girls' rivalry flared occasionally—glaring over who sat next to him at meals—but softened into reluctant camaraderie, like when they teamed up to scold Natsu for setting the table on fire.

One crisp morning, Makarov hopped onto the bar, banging a mug for attention. "Listen up, brats! It's that time—the year 777 S-class exams start soon! This year's Nominees are : Laxus, Varion, Macao, and Wakaba. Train hard, you have 4 weeks , the trials will test everything you've got, only 1 of you will become S class !"

Cheers erupted, eyes turning to Varion with respect and excitement.
