Varion didn't give them a chance to speak.
The moment he stepped fully into the clearing, fury ignited in his chest like a star going supernova. These people had burned an entire village to ash — a family trying to shield their children reduced to charred husks. They held no value in life. So he would show them none in return.
He threw a punch forward, magic surging through his arm without restraint. "Star Dragon Meteor Fist!"
His fist blazed with silver-white stellar energy, the air around it warping as a comet-like projectile of pure cosmic force erupted forward. The blast rocketed toward the group with terrifying speed, the ground cracking beneath its path.
The 7 Kin of Purgatory reacted instantly — but not to protect each other. They ignored each other completely, scattering or raising their own defenses to save themselves. The black haired girl clutched the child tighter, her eyes wide with fear as the attack roared past them, close enough that the shockwave nearly knocked her off her feet. She stumbled back, shielding the little girl with her body, but none of the dark mages even glanced their way.
The meteor fist slammed into the cluster of no-name goons and two of the Kin, exploding in a brilliant burst of starlight and force taking them all out instantly. Several mages were sent flying, screaming as they crashed into trees or the ground, bones breaking on impact. The air filled with the scent of scorched flesh and ozone.
Then he saw a torrent of pitch-black fire hurtling toward him from the left, accompanied by psychotic, cackling laughter. The flames were unnatural, darker than normal fire, almost alive, hungry in a way that felt wrong. They scorched the air itself.
Varion dodged the blast, the heat licked the edge of his cloak. His eyes locked onto the source: a blond mage with wild eyes and a manic grin, still laughing like a lunatic as he hurled another wave of black fire.
'That's the one' Varion realized, his blood boiling. The same type of fire magic that had clung to the burned village like a curse. This psychotic blond was the one responsible for the massacre.
The remaining Kin of Purgatory moved as one, surrounding Varion in a circle. They weren't here to talk — they were here to kill.
Spells erupted from every direction at once.
Zancrow hurled a torrent of pitch-black God Slayer flames, the dark fire hungry and corrosive, burning the very air itself. The black flames washed over Varion's cloak, licking at the fabric… and did absolutely nothing. The cloak, woven from Veldanava's own scales, remained untouched, the flames sliding off like water on oil.
Azuma slammed his hands into the ground, massive tree roots erupting from the earth like spears, trying to impale Varion from below. Rustyrose manifested a giant armored knight construct that swung a massive sword down at him. Kain Hikaru shouted "Macro!" attempting to seize control of Varion's body like a puppet after grabing a pice of hair.
Varion moved like a comet, weaving between the onslaught with terrifying speed. He leaped over the tree roots, shattered an earth spike with a Star Dragon's Claw, and dodged the black flames by a hair — the heat still singeing the air around him. He felt a phantom sensation from kain trying to force his body to move and quickly broke it by flooding his body with large amounts of his magic causing pains doll to explode.
But they kept coming — relentless, coordinated, and lethal. Zancrow's black fire kept forcing him to dodge, the God Slayer flames eating away at anything they touched. Rustyrose's manifested creatures charged from multiple angles. Ultear aged the air around him to make it thin and hard to breathe, though her attacks were slightly slower than the others.
Varion's eyes narrowed, his scales rippling as he prepared to push back harder.
Azuma, Kain, and Rustyrose exchanged a single, tense glance. The sheer overwhelming presence radiating from Varion, the magic pressure and the way he moved, told them everything they needed to know.
"This isn't a fight we can win," Azuma muttered under his breath giting his teeth and feeling the pice of the key to awaken Zeref in his bag.
Kain nodded sharply. "We're pulling back. Everyone else — stall him!"
Rustyrose smirked, already beginning to retreat into the treeline. "Buy us time."
The three of them barked orders at the remaining goons and lower-ranked dark mages, then slipped away into the forest without another word, abandoning their comrades to their fate.
The fodder mages hesitated for only a second before charging Varion in a desperate swarm, spells flying wildly — fireballs, shadow bolts, poison needles, and crude earth spikes.
Varion moved through them like a storm.
He weaved between the attacks with terrifying precision, Star Dragon's Claw slashing through three mages at once, their bodies crumpling as stellar energy seared through them. Zancrow kept laughing maniacally, hurling wave after wave of black God Slayer flames, while Ultear used Arc of Time to rapidly age sections of the ground beneath Varion's feet, trying to make it crumble and trap him.
Varion was fighting all of them at once — dodging Zancrow's corrosive black fire, shattering Ultear's accelerated crystal sphere with raw strength, and dismantling the fodder mages with efficient, brutal strikes. He wasn't playing around anymore. These people had burned a village full of innocents. He intended to end them permanently if they forced his hand.
Then he noticed it — three of the stronger auras had vanished from his senses.
His head snapped toward the treeline where Azuma, Kain, and Rustyrose had been. They were gone. They had run.
The realization hit him like a thunderclap. Rage surged through Varion's body, his magic spiking violently. The air around him warped, silver-blue energy exploding outward in a pressure wave that made the remaining dark mages stumble back in terror.
"They ran…" Varion growled, his voice low and dangerous, eyes glowing with stellar fury. "You burn a village, kill children, and then you run like cowards?!!!"
The remaining mages who had stayed realized in that moment just how screwed they were. The oppressive pressure rolling off Varion made their knees buckle. Some tried to flee. Others attacked in blind panic.
Varion destroyed them.
He tore through the fodder like a force of nature — Star Dragon's Roars cutting down groups, Comet Fists shattering bones, Wing Attacks slicing through spells and bodies alike. Zancrow kept cackling and throwing black fire, but Varion closed the distance in a blur, slamming a Star Dragon's Claw across his chest that sent the blond mage crashing through several trees.
Ultear tried to age the air around him again to suffocate him, but Varion's magic burned through the effect like it was nothing.
Finally, only Zancrow and Ultear remained.
Zancrow staggered to his feet, still laughing even as blood poured from his mouth. "You're strong, fairy! But you can't—"
Varion didn't let him finish.
He raised his hand, condensing stellar energy into a massive, volatile sphere between his palms a Draco Nova far larger and more unstable than the one he had used against Jose. Arcs of raw cosmic energy lashed out wildly, the air itself screaming as he struggled to contain the power.
With a roar of pure rage, he unleashed it.
The Draco Nova slammed into Zancrow like the wrath of a star. The blond mage's eyes widened for a split second before the attack consumed him completely — a blinding explosion of silver-white light that lit up the entire forest. When the light faded, there was nothing left of Zancrow but a scorched crater and drifting ash.
Varion turned slowly, breathing steadily, his eyes glowing with lingering fury.
The only one left standing was Ultear.
Varion walked forward slowly, his boots crunching on the scorched ground, his glowing eyes fixed on Ultear with unyielding intensity. The air around him still crackled with residual magic power, the weight of his presence pressing down like gravity itself.
Ultear scrambled backward in terror, her back slamming into the trunk of a thick tree. She pressed herself against it as if trying to disappear into the bark, her body trembling violently. Tears welled up in her eyes, spilling over as fear consumed her completely. "S-Stay away… please…"
Varion's hand shot out like lightning, clamping tightly around her throat. His grip was iron, choking her as he lifted her slightly off the ground. Ultear gasped, her hands flying up to claw desperately at his wrist, nails digging into his scales but finding no purchase. His glare burned into her — righteous fury blazing in his starlit eyes.
"Why did you attack the village?" he demanded, his voice low and dangerous, barely restrained. "What were you after? Why did you kill everyone?!"
Ultear choked, tears streaming down her face as she struggled for air, her legs kicking weakly. Varion loosened his grip just enough for her to breathe, but kept his hand firmly around her throat, refusing to let her go.
She broke down completely, sobs wracking her body as the dam finally shattered. "I-I don't know… Lord Hades said he just needed a piece of the key… to awaken Zeref… I found it… I thought… I thought once I gave it to him they would leave… but the others… they started killing… burning everything…"
Her voice cracked into a wail, self-hate and grief pouring out of her in waves. "He told me… once we awakened Zeref and created the Grand Magic World… I could go back in time… live with my mother again… I didn't agree to killing those people!!!"
She screamed the last part, her voice raw with anguish, tears pouring down her face as she bawled, her body shaking violently in his grip. "I didn't want this… I didn't want any of this…"
Varion's glare didn't soften, but his hand remained steady, holding her in place as the weight of her confession hung in the air between them.
Varion stared down at Ultear, his hand still firmly around her throat, but not squeezing hard enough to truly harm her. He could feel it — the raw honesty in her words, the genuine grief and self-loathing pouring out of her. She wasn't lying. Her tears, her broken sobs, the way her body shook with guilt — it was all real.
But that didn't excuse what she had a hand in.
He loosened his grip slightly, though he didn't let go completely, keeping her pinned against the tree. His voice was low, cold, and controlled. "You weren't lying. I can feel it. But that doesn't make what you did any less monstrous."
Ultear sobbed harder, her hands weakly clutching at his wrist, tears streaming down her face. "I… I know…"
Varion's eyes narrowed. "The pink-haired girl I saw you holding. Who is she? Why was she with you?"
Ultear took a shaky breath, her voice trembling as she forced the words out. "Her name is Meredy… she's… she's just a child. She has strong magic… Lord Hades said I was only allowed to save her because of that. Because she could be useful. The others… they didn't care. They wanted to kill everyone. I… I only managed to hide her. I couldn't save anyone else…"
Her voice broke again, fresh tears falling as she looked away in shame. "I'm sorry… I'm so sorry… I didn't want this… I just wanted to see my mother again…"
Varion's grip remained firm, but his expression softened just a fraction — not forgiveness, but understanding that she was a broken tool in someone else's game. Still, the village was gone. Innocents were dead. That couldn't be ignored.
He slowly loosened his grip and let her slide down the tree until her feet touched the ground. His hand remained on her shoulder, pinning her in place with enough strength to make it clear she wasn't going anywhere.
"Talk," he demanded, his voice low and unyielding. "Everything. All the operations in this area. Every dark guild involved in the same thing you were doing or just in the area in general. Where are they located? Where is your base? Where is your master?"
Ultear trembled, tears still streaming down her face. She swallowed hard, her voice shaky but truthful as she spilled everything she knew.
"Grimoire Heart… our base is an airship. It's always moving — never stays in one place for long. Right now it's somewhere over the eastern mountains, but it could be anywhere by tomorrow. Master Hades… he's on the ship. He's the one who gave the orders. He wanted the key fragment to awaken Zeref… that's all I was told. The other dark guilds… they were hired or coerced. Some are working with us for power, others because Hades threatened them. We've been raiding villages for resources, artifacts, and strong mages with special abilities. The attacks… they weren't just random. We were looking for something specific — ancient relics tied to Zeref. The village you saw… they had one of the pieces. We took it. The others… they decided to burn everything after. I tried to… but… I couldn't…"
She broke down again, sobs shaking her body as she clutched at Varion's arm, not in resistance but in desperate need for something solid to hold onto.
"Please… I didn't want any of this. I just wanted to go back… to fix what happened to my mother…"
Varion's expression remained hard, but he didn't interrupt. He absorbed every word, committing the information to memory — the moving airship, Hades' location, the other dark guilds involved, the true goal behind the raids.
When she finally fell silent, still crying, he spoke again, his voice cold but controlled.
"You're coming with me. After i go deal with the dark guilds. You're going to tell Master Makarov everything you just told me. And if you try anything, anything at all, I won't hesitate I will kill you."
Ultear nodded weakly, too broken to argue, tears still falling as she accepted her fate.
