Chapter 28 - And so it begins

[1st POV]

(A week later)

Fuck.

Now my week off was over.

It's insane how no one talks about the difference in duration between a working week and a week off. I kid you not, these two weeks were completely different. A week off was at most half the time of a working week.

Maybe it was the work of the Job Devil or the Working Devil, but whatever it was, scientists need to study this instead of trying to build atomic weapon bullshit like I'm reading now.

The USA and the Soviet Union continue an arms race; two powerful nations turn to Nuclear Energy.

Apparently, atomic bombs had not been invented yet in this world. Probably because World War II did not exist, and a certain Austrian painter did not exist in this world.

It was one of the many changes you could expect. My old world did not have devils, so there were bound to be many differences between my old world and this world.

"I'm no longer on the front page," I said before quickly disregarding the newspaper by handing it to a random pedestrian.

Here I was, in the Minato Ward of Tokyo, following my usual patrol routes. Aki was not with me this morning because he went on a mission with the First Division. It happened while I was on vacation, so I didn't care and gave him permission as the captain. But now, two days later and my days off were over, he had not returned.

I hope he didn't get himself killed.

Who am I kidding?

That suicidal bastard would probably get himself killed the first chance he got. If he found no chance, he would still kill himself.

He's probably dead by now.

That's why he didn't return.

...

"That's so sadddd. I lost my only friend! Woe is me, and me is woe. Yoyo," I mumbled mindlessly while walking down the patrol routes without even looking around for devils.

My sense of smell covered the whole Ward and more. My nose was especially sharp because devils were basically food to me. I would know if a devil appeared outside of my territory.

But in the end, I was a slave to appearances. I had to patrol, at least to give security to the civilians.

I walked past a high school couple who were holding hands. They did not walk side by side because of the busy sidewalk. The girl went first; she seemed like the vivacious type. The guy seemed broody in retrospect and he was being dragged by the girl.

Both had a healthy red on their faces.

My head turned. My eyes were on them even after they walked past me.

You know, it's not so funny or cringeworthy anymore when it happened to you. I looked at them almost fondly, understanding exactly the emotions they must be feeling.

I sighed and slapped my face, trying to light a candle of motivation inside me.

I wasn't only doing a job, I reminded myself, I was protecting people.

I was protecting them.

"Yosh! I will make the Minato Ward the safest ward in Tokyo!!" I said loudly while raising my fist. The other people gave me weird looks, like they couldn't believe their safety and security depended on a guy like me.

If only they knew how lucky they were.

I continued my patrol through the city. But even after covering a large area, I could not for the life of me find any devil. Not a single devil appeared today.

But after an hour or so, my phone rang. I hurriedly took it out, thinking that it was probably an emergency call from the police or the Public Safety Commission. A devil appeared somewhere beyond my scope, and they needed someone to deal with it.

That must be it.

But when I looked at the caller, the words 'Lady Makima' were written. By the way, she saved herself by that name on my phone.

"Hello," I said, a little less enthusiastic.

"Jin," Makima said on the phone, "I have something for you."

And then enthusiasm was back.

"Is it a devil?" I asked.

My excitement came from the mix between my sudden burst of motivation and also the desire to consume a devil after a week.

"...Kind of," she said.

"We found another hybrid like you," she said.

I froze, eyes wide, in the middle of the street.

Was it already that time?

"What type of hybrid is he?" I asked.

"Unlike you, it's a weapon type," she said.

"It's the Chainsaw Devil."

..

..

"I'll be there in..." I looked at the time on my phone, "...ten minutes."

I hung up the phone and immediately waved for a taxi. But seeing no immediate success, I clicked my tongue and decided to go there myself.

I'll probably be faster than any taxi.

So I bent my knees and jumped onto one building. I underestimated by a huge margin as I shot into the sky, cracking the pavement and releasing a shockwave that pushed people down.

"Sorry!!" I said after landing on the roof of a building.

And then I was off, jumping over three whole buildings at a time and making my way towards the Public Safety Commission Headquarters.

This was big.

Like really big.

If Denji was here, that meant the canon was starting.

I should be worried, concerned even.

But I couldn't help the wide grin on my face.

Perhaps I had gotten used to hell.

[3rd POV]

(Makima's Office)

"Oh, you've changed," Makima said in her usual cold tone while looking at the new pet she found.

"Yup, the nice guy in the office gave me uniforms," Denji said, excited just to wear new and clean clothes for once.

How long had it been since he had worn new clothes? The only thing he could find were fabrics in the trash that had holes in them.

Or if he was lucky, some people would throw away good clothes after vomiting or shitting on it. He'd take these clothes, clean them and make them his own. It was one of the reasons why big restaurants or barbeques were his favorite place to go garbage digging. Not only could you find leftovers in the trash, you could get new clothes.

It was like a shopping mall, at least in his mind.

Denji couldn't help but pull his uniform close to his nose and smell the fresh scent of fabric. He had a stupid grin on his face while doing so.

A grin Makima couldn't help but want to tear off.

"Your name was Denji, right?"

"Yup, that's me!" Denji said in a salute tone.

That only made Makima frown. The name and the devil matched exactly. The person standing in front of her was someone destined to kill her.

How could she get killed by a street rat? She didn't know. Let's just say she was not impressed with his antics. Not even a tiny bit. She did not find him amusing like she did her dogs.

The Chainsaw Devil on the other hand was something different. Makima had searched for the Chainsaw Devil for a long time, thinking that he would be the solution to all her problems and that she shared a deep connection with him.

Makima was born during World War II when the government was strictly controlling the citizens and a military dictatorship was blooming because of the war. But the Chainsaw Devil ate the World War II devil and even the Nazi devil. Basically stealing from her the very origin she was born from.

Perhaps her obsession started there.

An obsession that had died down dramatically. Or should she say replaced by a new obsession.

Jin Nakahara.

Not the Pig Devil but Jin Nakahara.

The Pig Devil had existed for a long time. They even had records of easily killing the Pig Devil like any other small fry. But it was when this power fell on Jin Nakahara that it became special.

So it made sense. The Pig Devil was not special in her eyes, Jin Nakahara was.

A special type of human she could not yet figure out and had even less control over.

But honestly, that's what made it fun and also what slowly shifted her perspective of him.

"Are you aware of your situation, Denji?" she asked, her eyes looking straight but never meeting the boy's face.

There was only one face she remembered. And there would only be one face she remembered.

"Umm..." Denji scratched his head, "Not exactly? I'm your pet, right?"

"Right, but that's only between you and me," she said, masking her thoughts with a kind neutral face. One that made her look like an aloof cool queen.

"In reality, you are recruited to be a member of the 4th Special Division of Tokyo. You have two choices in front of you. You can work for the Public Safety Commission as a Devil Hunter and human. We will put your ability to good use," she said, showing her index finger.

"Or you can reject the offer and you will be put down as a Devil," she said, showing another finger.

"Definitely this one," he said, touching her index finger. Perhaps it was due to the lack of vocabulary from never having education but he made the choice by pointing at her index finger.

Makima allowed her lips to curve a bit.

"Good choice," she said, reeling back. The boy smelled of rot, decay and blood. He had not taken a bath since his recent transformation.

"I'll introduce you to the captain of your division. He will sort you out without any issue. He might even take a liking to you since you are both hybrids. It was part of the reason why I decided to bring you in," and not kill you instantly, she thought in her mind.

It was a miracle how she didn't kill him instantly and take his Chainsaw heart after he revealed his name. But the curiosity of him being the person to kill her and the possibility of Jin liking his company was the reason why she held back.

When thinking about it, it was much easier to secure the Chainsaw Devil to her side through the human as well. Hybrids were always troublesome, especially when it happened she thinks the way it happened to Denji. A devil agreeing and initiating the process.

She wouldn't deny that although she was not as obsessed over the Chainsaw Devil, she did still have greed towards it. It was just not as strong as before, it simply was not her only choice or her first choice anymore.

If Jin was her true love, then Chainsaw Devil would be her first love.

"What? I thought I would be working with Miss Makima," Denji said, shoulders slumping.

"Maybe someday, if you prove yourself to be a good boy, you could work with me," she said.

His eyes sparkled immediately, "Really? Then I will do my best! I will even lick your feet if you asked."

So easy to control.

He was almost begging to be controlled. An abused child grew up broken. He did not even understand an alternate situation where he didn't submit and obey commands.

So different from him.

That was the kind of situation she thought she would get when she first met Jin.

"So when is this guy coming?" Denji asked.

Makima eyed Denji for a bit before shifting her eyes to her watch. It had only been five minutes since she called him.

"He said he would be here in ten minutes. But I guess I was right in my assumption. He is very interested in you," she said and smiled when her nose picked up a scent.

"He's here," she said and stood up from her chair.

She kicked her table, making it crash at Denji who stood at the front. She shoved her movable chair too and then turned towards the window behind her office.

And as if on cue, someone crashed through the window. The shattered glass exploded everywhere. The window pane got broken into pieces like they were water.

And Jin came falling in.

Makima held out her arms, the glass avoiding her figure like every piece was controlled to avoid her. And then she caught him mid air.

Shatter!!

She twisted her body, dispersing the momentum of his fall while still holding him tightly.

When the chaos was over, she looked down at the head she caught between her bosom.

Jin blinked. He thought he would have a superhero landing at her table but now he found his head sandwiched between her tits.

"Take the door next time, Jin," she said, not coming off as an order or a scolding tone because that was like throwing water in a desert.

"Oh you mean the door of the building which led to the door of the security checkpoint which led to the door of the administrative hallway which led to the door of the stairs which led to the door of the floor which led to the door of the reception counter which led to the door of your office?" Jin said, slowly, so that he could stay in his position longer.

But the two of them knew that.

Makima nodded with a smile.

"I'll do that when I come to take new jobs," Jin said, finally standing up and pushing himself off her chest.

Standing at his full height, he easily towered over her and she couldn't help but notice that height difference. Superior position in body language.

"That will be much appreciated," Makima said.

Jin gave a nod, finally turning away from the red flag he promised to avoid but couldn't. He looked at Denji who was under the fallen table.

"Haha! YOU!!" Jin said, pointing at Denji.

"Me?" Denji, who was looking at Jin's position enviously, snapped back to reality.

"Yes you!" Jin said, barely able to hold back his emotion after finally seeing the main character.

"I have decided!" Jin said, speaking the decision that he came to after running all the way here.

It was the same kind of decision he made for all the tragic characters he had met so far in this world.

"I will send you to school, feed you three meals a day including snacks, give you a place to sleep, give you friends, and find you a girlfriend who's going to have lots of sex with you!"

Maybe he was too excited.

Both Makima and Denji were dumbfounded by the Jin adrenaline infused actions.

But Denji recovered first, his eyes shaking and tears pooling inside. He threw the table away to make a clear space and knelt down in front of Jin like people do when worshipping.

He joined his hands.

"Then you must be god," he said, tears falling from his eyes.

Makima watched all this happen with a tilt of her head and seriously considered her decision.

Was this really a good idea?

Author : 500 stones for an extra chapter. But this goal will expire after one day. So we need 500 stones for extra chapter.

Honestly, even though I said we will do powerstone goals this week, it's hard to find time because it's Christmas and I'm going here and there, enjoying time with friends and family.

Hence the tough goal. But if you can do that, I can find it in me to write another chapter.

Anyways thanks for reading.
