Ren and Kai were eating snacks on the rooftop beside their tent.
"We've only been doing this for a couple of hours and I'm already sick of it," Ren said, slumping back on the Cold ground.
The tent they got was cheap, so it wasn't comfortable at all—small, cramped, and honestly kind of miserable. And it didn't help that the weather had been cold for the past few days. Even wearing a jacket didn't really make it better.
On Star Island, the weather was controlled by the island's board on purpose, because Star Island's location was one of the biggest secrets in the world. Villains and spies couldn't just casually come to the island, and one of the methods used to disguise its location was messing with the weather.
If a spy was already on the island, they couldn't rely on the weather to judge where the island might be.
There was a schedule for the weather that everyone had in their homes, and you could even get one from stores for free if you lost yours.
There were also rumors that the island could actually move to keep the location secret… but Ren and Kai had no idea if that was true or not.
Kai sighed. "I know, man. But we have to wait… or at least try to take down Gunshot first."
"I know that," Ren said, "but we haven't found anything about them yet."
Immediately after they left Greenfield, the two of them started working. They didn't waste time—trying to figure out what was going on with Gunshot, trying to find any lead they could.
At first, they didn't even know where to look.
But after they decided on a few places where they could possibly get information, they found… nothing.
The first guy they met was a small-time information broker. He didn't have much info at all—just surface-level stuff. The type of guy you could find casually because he wasn't really deep in anything.
But apparently, all information about Gunshot had gone cold.
And when they went to other low-ranked information brokers, the same thing happened.
Ren and Kai already had a guess about what was going on.
Gunshot went into hiding the moment they heard what happened to their vice leader. They were trying to disappear. And if Gunshot was hiding like that, then Ren and Kai's chances of finding them were basically zero.
But if Gunshot decided to go after them instead—if they didn't fully hide—then Ren and Kai need to keep their head Low.
So that's why they made the decision.
For now… they were going to stay hidden.
They were going to spend most of their time camping on this rooftop, watching, waiting, until they could come up with a plan to get out of this situation.
So how long do you think we need to hide until we go back home… and we can be done with Gunshot forever?" Ren asked.
Kai responded, "I honestly don't know. But we can't stay hiding like this forever. Soon the cops will be looking for us because we went missing."
"So why not finish this tonight?"
A third voice came from the side. When they looked, someone jumped onto the rooftop of the store. He was the one speaking.
Ren and Kai instantly got on guard, preparing to fight.
"Are you with Gunshot?" Kai asked.
"Yes, I am," the man said. "And I'm here to take the both of you."
That made the two of them flinch and make eye contact briefly.
This might go bad.
"I suggest you two don't run," the man continued, "because I'm not the only one here. So just come along with us."
Ren and Kai didn't respond, but they walked up to him anyway and went along.
Because even though this was obviously a trap—and even though going with them could end up bad—if what he was saying was true… then they were already trapped.
If they try to escape right now, maybe they could escape and get out… but next time it would be worse.
So it would be better if they went with him.
And if the boss was truly there, and they managed to take him down and get out—and give the boss to the police—then this whole thing would finally be over.
So they got off the roof and started walking away.
And slowly, surely, two other people started walking next to them.
They were probably the ones helping him catch them.
Eventually, they arrived at a tunnel.
There was an island-wide curfew, since most of the population were students. The only ones that weren't affected by this were college students and adults. And even then, very few people drove through this tunnel, because there weren't a lot of them around this area.
When they got to the entrance of the tunnel, they saw an irritated redhead.
It was the Gunshot leader.
You know… I fantasised about seeing the two of you," the Gunshot leader spoke up.
Seeing the two pricks who ruined everything I worked for.
Four years.
And after learning that the two who did all of this were just some two wannabe heroes who just got on THE GODDAMN ISLAND—
He yelled so hard you could almost feel the sound. That was unnatural, and they both noticed it quickly.
They weren't really paying attention to the Gunshot leader.
They were analysing him, and where they were, and the three people behind them guarding the entrance of the tunnel.
And what the leader just did immediately got their attention.
Because of Iris.
She was wielding a gun.
The vice leader of the gang called Gunshot… if their name was a reference to something—or more specifically in this case the leader—it wouldn't make sense, considering that he didn't seem to be holding anything on him.
So does this mean it's a reference to the vice leader?
Well, that wouldn't have made sense considering it would imply Iris had more influence over the gang, but not really. Most leaders, with exceptions, will not tolerate it.
And even though they only listened to the beginning part of his rant, he doesn't seem like the type that will ignore a meaningless implication like that.
So that leaves one option.
It references the vice leader and the leader of the gang together.
And why is that important again?
It gives them a hint.
And that hint… is his power.
His voice affected the sound around them somehow.
There are plenty of abilities that could do that other than sound type abilities—but if the "gun" part is a reference to Iris, and the "shot" part of the name is referencing the leader…
That means his power is a sound type power.
But even though they knew that now, they didn't know what his power actually does.
Can he control sound in some type of way?
Or does his voice amplify sound waves like Black Canary?
Anyways… they will figure it out during the fight.
And right on time.
"So I'm gonna rip the both of you apart," the leader finally finished his rant—right after they finished analysing things.
Then he got in a fighting stance.
And the two of them followed along.
And now finally… after almost two weeks…
This will end tonight.
(DC and Marvel comics exist in this universe but because there are real heroes, they aren't as popular in this world)
