Chapter 27 - Police station

The next morning, Ren and Kai were still in the police station. Since the girl took them there pretty late at night, very few police officers were actually there. Normally, they were only there so that if anyone needed them, they could work—but since Ren and Kai were involved with Gunshot, a gang, and the leader of that gang was also arrested… things needed to move fast, and with multiple people. So one thing led to another, and they ended up spending the night at the police station.

And finally… the officers had the time and manpower to deal with both of them.

Ren and Kai were inside an interrogation room, but unlike in movies and TV shows, the lighting was great. There wasn't a single flickering lightbulb in the room, and the room wasn't grey—it was colourful, with a couple of posters on the walls. It didn't look like a room where they were going to interrogate suspects… it looked like a room where they were going to question witnesses.

So far, things were looking good for them.

The door of the interrogation room opened, and coming inside were the girl from before

clothes and a police.

The girl this time was wearing normal clothes instead of her costume from before

Ren tensed and started panicking a little bit, honestly not even knowing why he was acting like this. I mean… he gets it. This girl was extremely beautiful. Insane figure, and eyes like the su—

He shook his head.

What the fuck am I thinking? This isn't the time for anything like that.

Whatever it was, he forced himself to focus on what the girl and the officer came here to say.

The girl was the first one to speak up.

"Hello there. My name is Cassandra. Or you could call me Cass and I am from SIED. I hope the two of you were comfortable during your stay here."

"Yes," Kai said. "Even though I slept in a prison cell, it was at least much better than trying to sleep on a roof."

Ren just nodded his head.

Cass smiled, then spoke again.

"Well, now we want to hear why both of you were with the leader of Gunshot—a small gang—and what exactly is your connection with them."

And with that, Ren and Kai explained how they got involved with Gunshot in the first place… and the reasons why they did what they did instead of just calling the cops.

Kai did most of the explaining, but Ren also added his share, because he needed to explain his parts in more detail.

And it helped him get over his shyness and embarrassment.

And with that, their questioning was over.

"Well, we'll look over your statements and come back to you," the officer said.

Him and Cass left the interrogation room.

Ren, who was still kind of focusing on Cass, decided to distract himself by asking Kai about something.

"Hey, Kai."

"Hm? What is it?" Kai looked at him.

"The girl… Cass. She mentioned that she's from SIED. What is that exactly?"

"Wait, you don't know about them?" Kai asked.

Ren just nodded his head. "No."

Kai scratched his head.

"Well… I guess it's normal. There are a lot of things on Star Island, so not everything can be advertised to the outside world. Like SIED."

"But SIED is one of the most important groups on Star Island. Working under the Island Board."

Ren leaned forward without meaning to. "Okay… so what are they?"

Kai took a breath, like he was preparing to explain something obvious.

"The name SIED is an acronym for Star Island Enforcement Division."

"They're basically just cops."

"Wait, what?" Ren said instantly, completely thrown off. "But there are cops already on the island."

"Well, yes," Kai said. "But the difference between normal cops and SIED is the type of cases they handle."

"The cops handle normal crimes: assault, robbery, stuff like that. And SIED does the same exact thing—"

"But the reason they're separated into different groups is because of the people committing those crimes."

Ren stayed quiet, listening closely.

"The cops handle normal criminals. Normal operations," Kai continued. "While SIED goes after criminals with powers… or dangerous martial artists, like Mark."

Ren was impressed without even trying to hide it.

"SIED sounds… great," Ren admitted. "And Cass is seriously part of that? She's what—like a year older than us? Seventeen?"

"Actually," Kai interrupted, "most of SIED members are students."

"Wait, seriously?" Ren asked, shocked. An official group made of students sounded insane.

"Why?"

"It's a little complicated," Kai said, rubbing his chin like he was trying to figure out where to start. "But you already know that the population here is mostly students."

Ren nodded.

"And adults are the minority on the island," Kai continued. "And it doesn't help that most adults are here for their jobs—teachers, staff, security, and other island work… or they're here looking after their children who are still too young to live by themselves."

Anyways, the adults that work here either are teachers or work in other facilities. Very few of them are actually working in security for the internal stuff—specifically towards students committing misbehavior or crimes. Most of them are working on actual important things to protect on the island, like the New Life pills, the location of the island, or villains that try to come here. So in response, SIED has been created—students protecting other students, Kai finished.

And Ren just thought about all the information that he learned, and wondered to himself, how the heck didn't I know about this before? I mean… he was busy with all the Gunshot stuff, so he can give himself a pass. At least a little.

Then the door opened again. Cass and the police officer came in.

"Well, you two are free to go," the police officer said.

"Really?" Ren asked.

"Yes. After cross-checking your statements with other ones and checking your voice records, it's pretty clear that the two of you are innocent in all of this."

"What do you mean by voice record?" Ren asked.

"We still have a recording of your voice, Mr. Ren, where you called the cops in the nightclub and in Greenfield. And you didn't disguise your voice, so it was easy to match it."

And with that, Ren and Kai got the permission to leave.

So While they were going through the police station—

"Wait just a second," Cass stopped them.

Ren turned around and looked at her. "What is it?" he asked nervously.

"The two of you were incredible, doing everything that you guys did. Well, I mean… the last part was a little stupid—the moment you took care of the vice leader you probably should have called in for the cops' help—but everything other than that was incredible. You guys took down a massive operation and nearly dismantled a small gang. The two of you are incredible," she said.

Ren just smiled and tried to look confident, hiding his blush. "Well… it wasn't really something that special. You probably could have taken care of everything by yourself," Ren said.

"No. You're just praising me, and don't undermine your achievements. Again, you guys did an incredible job," she complimented.

Thankfully, Kai managed to enter the conversation before she could notice Ren's face that was about to glow red.

"Thanks for all of this… but why are you exactly bringing this up?"

She smiled. "Well, like I said, I was so impressed with everything you achieved. So I thought about it… and I decided to recommend the both of you to SIED."
