Kim sat on Mia's couch Wednesday morning, staring at her phone.
She'd barely slept. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw that black sedan. Saw the threatening text. Saw her address staring back at her like a promise.
"You okay?" Mia asked, coming out of the kitchen with two mugs of coffee.
"Yeah," Kim lied, taking one. "Just tired."
Mia sat down next to her. "You need to eat something. When's the last time you had a real meal?"
Kim tried to remember. Yesterday? The day before? It all blurred together.
"I'm not really hungry."
"That's not what I asked."
Kim managed a weak smile. "You sound like my mother."
"Good. Someone needs to." Mia took a sip of her coffee. "What do you need from the store? We should make a list."
Kim pulled up the notes app on her phone. "Toothbrush. Toothpaste. Deodorant. Maybe some clothes? I only packed enough for one night."
"We can stop by Target. Get you a few basics."
"I can't keep staying here, Mia. I need to figure out what to do."
