A sharp howl cut me off.
We stilled, my ears twitching as I detected the sound, Umbra ready to spring out of my skin. Then another howl, and another, and another.
And with every howl the distance lessened. They were closing in around us.
The Gammas shifted into defensive positions, some already beginning their transformations. Growls rumbled through the group as wolves emerged from their human forms, hackles raised, teeth bared.
"Hold," I commanded, but my own body was tense, ready to shift at a moment's notice.
Shapes materialized from the mist. Wolves. At least a dozen of them, their forms indistinct in the red haze but growing clearer as they approached. Their eyes reflected what little light penetrated the mist, creating an eerie ring of glowing orbs around us.
"Formation," one of the Gammas snarled, and the retinue tightened into a defensive circle.
"Wait," Althea said sharply, stepping forward before I could stop her.
"Altheaā"
The first wolf lunged at her.
