Chapter 7 - Invasion

Maryne woke up to a painful back as her friends made their way inside. She glared at the yellow-suited men as they walked with weaponry to the police van. More of them followed with a fire extinguisher and grenades as they geared up in the truck. Tracey quickly caught them and said, "Watch out. This thing has tricks up its sleeve," "Trust me, once we're there. it'll never kill ever again," the Chief said, closing the door behind him.

"You really believe them?" "Nope. I just want to get rid of this case," he said, the rest of the recruits laughing. Tracey and Magdalene watched videos on their phone as Maryne got an idea. "You know what's crazy? We're in a police station!" she said, standing up. "Yes, Maryne. That's pretty clear," "No, you're not understanding. Right down the corner is the evidence room-" "-And in the room is mostly history and things we can use to learn more about the creature and any evidence related to it," "Exactly!" Maryne smiled, and the two stood up. "How are we getting there?" "We're going to have to sneak through. We can just-" "-Do you really think that's a great idea?" Lishawn said, yawning. "Yeah, it's the only idea we have," "Well, good luck. If there's anything that matches my personality, take it for me," "Urgh, sure..." Maryne said, dragging her words with a sigh.

When a police officer was exiting the premises, Tracey managed to hold the door while Lishawn distracted the officer. As quickly as possible, they sneaked through undetected and cheered, making their way to the evidence room.

Arriving at the location, the men made their way within the factory as the Chief stopped them for a briefing. "Okay, listen. We go in, find and kill this thing, and notify the government to destroy the factory. I don't believe there's anything in it the but I'm willing to give those children a try-" "-delusion children," one of them interrupted, the whole crew laughing.

"As I was saying, we go in, kill this thing, and head home. Capiche?" The Chief said, and they nodded. They barged through the door, moving around with their flashlights. The place was as creepy as it was dark. Most of the windows were covered with weird branches. While scavenging the place, one of them found a bracelet. He had remembered it looked familiar where someone remembered just as he got the sight of the child and then a weird laugh passed by him. He quickly flashed his gun, aiming for a shot but nothing.

Then the laugh got louder as crying followed. I want my mommy. He waved the light everywhere but couldn't see any child. Then, at the tip of his eye, he saw hair as he moved his camera up and caught a girl covering her face with her hair. "Little girl, are you okay?" he asked, scared.

I don't want to be here anymore.

"Pardon me? I can't hear you." He said, moving closer.

I said, I want my mother.

The man slowly moved his gun down, reaching his hand out to the girl and as he lunged forward, red eyes appeared as the girl roared and bit his hand, the man dropped his gun and ran to the others with his arm bleeding. "GUYS, IT'S OVER HERE! THE CREATURE IS HER-" Before he could finish his sentence, vines came from beneath and dragged him to a dark corner as he screamed in pain. Blood then started to flow as the screams went silent.

The rest started shooting crazily as they saw something jump to the roof. When one of them aimed its flashlight towards the ceiling, it jumped towards him and bit his head off. Bullets were shot everywhere as the creature used its vines to remove their flashlights and devour each of them. The last surviving three with the Chief had run out of bullets so they ran up the stairs to the nearest room as the creature roared and multiple of its vines went chasing after them while it feasted on the others.

"CHEIF, THEY'RE ALL LOCKED!" the boy exclaimed, panicking. The chief used his gun to try and damage the doorknob while the vines grabbed onto one of the older recruits and took him into the dark. With the doorknob off, the chief dragged the last two with him in as the creature appeared and attempted to get him, bumping into the door. It started banging its head against the door as the two men did their best to hold the door shut.

All that was going on in their minds was how the trio was right and that something like this was killing innocent people every day, without them noticing.

While going through the evidence, Maryne couldn't help but peek through the records as she found cases related to the creature. "Yo, come check this out real quick," she said, placing multiple files and cases of missing persons. The trio was shocked when they saw dates that went back to the 1900s and even the 1800s. Although some of the files were damaged, it was clear that his thing had existed longer than anyone currently on earth. "So you're telling me this thing has been here for millennia? This can't be true," Magdalene said, Tracey gathering more cases. "Look at this, most of these are closed cases but they are unsolved. The cops literally gave up and never continued - despite the majority of the family and friends complaining about the creature," she said, smacking her lips in anger.

They were surprised when they located a recent file but it was from the case about a group of boys who almost survived but only the youngest lived to tell the story No one believed him until he claimed that the creature was back and anyone could be next. "Wait, 398 Polken Street. That's just down the road. We can totally go there!" Tracey suggested that the rest of the trio was concerned.

"I don't think Tracey, going somewhere far to see some random guy is a bit too much," "Let's just leave it to the officials," Magdalene agreed. "Yeah, it's out of our hands now," Maryne said, leaving. "Fine, it's that's how it's going to be," she said, no one responding.

The video failed to send as the Chief exploded. He realised that the only way to get this back to the station was by getting a signal and the creature had stopped banging against the door. Just as he stood up, his phone died and their only source of light disappeared. They stood ready for a shot as the eerie sound of whispers filled the room.

The door didn't want to open.

He tried simultaneously but the door did not budge. One of them started to cry as red eyes appeared in the dark shadowy corner. After reloading his gun, the Chief began to shoot at the corner, later aiming at the door as it hit the ground, the creature tackled the boy in front and ripped his face apart. Vines grabbed the guns and threw them across, the Chief getting the last recruit and running as fast as possible.

While running, the kids and pupils from the missing poster started running around, making it hard to see where they were going. He then missed a step and both of them went rolling down as they landed with injuries. "Come on, buddy!" Chief said, standing up. "We have to leav-" and the creature's vines sped into the boy's mouth as he tried pulling it out but his eyes then turned red as blood started dripping from his nose. The Chief was too stunned to act as the creature appeared right in front of it, standing on its two legs which made it look taller. "What are you?" he asked, the vines pulling the boy apart, the creature eating him from the air.

The Chief had one more trick up his sleeve and used the last battery power to shine light on the creature, burning its skin and shooting it with one of the others' guns - the creature was expressing so much pain. He ran for the exit as the vines chased after him. All he could think of was getting out of here and just before he opened the door, the vine attached to his leg and then cut him but he bit it off, crawling out of the building after freeing himself.

Chief was shaking as the creature's screech echoed within the factory but slowly fading away. He couldn't believe Lishawn was right and that the video he had would explain it all.

Tracey gave them the silent treatment as Lishawn was watching TV from across the station. Just as someone was about to say something, the chief limped to the desk as his blood led a trail. "Are you nuts, sir. You need the hospital," one of the nurses said. He walked over to the trio and handed them the key, hugging Tracey. "You guys were right. That's not just any creature we can bomb within, it's dangerous and smart... And every advantage it gets, it seizes them... obliterates the person for a feast," he said, handing over the phone and keys and finally collapsing to the ground.

Hours Later

They waited patiently as one of the cops came and nodded as Maryne unlocked the cell and hugged her sister. The moment was wonderful as Lishawn felt that she could finally go back home and rest on an actual bed. "You know, just maybe we'll go see that guy... Maybe," Magdalene said, grinning.

On their way to the car, Lishawn saw a picture that looked similar to her and Maryne's dad. She then ignored it and continued walking, getting a notification and it went as follows,

Hey, Lishawn. Hope you're well - unfortunately, due to the circumstances you've faced with your "episodes", we decided to remove you from handling the dance and hopefully give it to someone else. Thanks, Goodbye.

Lishawn was pissed and wanted nothing to do with social media, but she saw something behind another car and shrugged it off.
