Chapter 139 - Chapter 131 — The Village That Chose Me

The little silver bell rested quietly against Shen Qiyao's wrist.

Neither of them spoke.

The night had settled completely over the mountain.

Somewhere beyond the bamboo, the last traces of the festival had finally disappeared.

Only the wind remained.

It wandered softly through the grove, carrying with it the cool fragrance of earth and leaves.

He Qing looked toward Shen Qiyao.

"...Then..."

His voice was almost swallowed by the night.

"...what were you waiting for?"

The question lingered between them.

Shen Qiyao lowered his eyes to the bracelet.

His thumb gently rolled the tiny silver bell.

A faint chime drifted into the silence.

"I thought..."

he said slowly,

"...I was waiting for answers."

He smiled faintly.

"But perhaps..."

"...I was only waiting."

He Qing watched him quietly.

There was no teasing now.

Only patience.

After a while, he asked another question.

"You never planned to stay in Zhuyin Village."

It wasn't really a question.

More an observation.

Shen Qiyao shook his head.

"No."

"I was supposed to leave the next morning."

He Qing tilted his head.

"Then..."

"...why didn't you?"

For a long moment, Shen Qiyao simply looked toward the sea of bamboo.

The moonlight painted silver across every leaf.

His eyes slowly unfocused.

As though they were no longer looking at the grove before him—

but another night.

Another version of this same mountain.

"It was almost two years ago."

"My journey had already lasted much longer than I intended."

"I had stopped counting the villages."

"The temples."

"The mountains."

"The inns."

"They all became the same."

His voice remained calm.

Without bitterness.

As though he were describing someone else's life.

"I never stayed anywhere."

"If dawn came..."

"...I left."

"I had nowhere to return to."

"So there was no reason to remain."

He Qing listened quietly.

Not once interrupting.

"I heard there was another village beyond Zhuyin."

"I intended to cross the mountain the next morning."

"I only came here because the sun had already begun to set."

"The innkeeper said travelling through the forest at night wasn't safe."

"So..."

"I rented a room."

"...only for one night."

He smiled almost imperceptibly.

"I never imagined I would still be here."

He Qing lowered his gaze.

"...What changed?"

Another long silence.

Then—

Shen Qiyao looked toward the bamboo.

"Before I reached the village..."

"...I saw someone."

The wind seemed to stop.

He Qing remained perfectly still.

"There is a narrow stone path before the entrance to Zhuyin."

"I remember placing my foot upon it."

"And..."

"I remember thinking how strangely quiet everything had become."

"There were no birds."

"No insects."

"Even the wind seemed unwilling to move."

His voice softened.

"Then..."

"I heard it."

"The flute."

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

"So quietly..."

"...that I almost mistook it for the mountain breathing."

His fingers unconsciously tightened around the bracelet.

"I looked toward the bamboo."

"And there..."

He paused.

Searching for a memory too beautiful to be described by ordinary words.

"...stood someone."

Another silence.

"I couldn't see their face clearly."

"The moon was behind them."

"I only remember white."

"White robes."

"A white jade flute."

"Long black hair."

"And..."

His brows drew together slightly.

"...white lilies."

"So many that I could no longer see the ground beneath them."

"They moved with the wind."

"As though the entire valley had become a sea of white."

He Qing's breathing slowed.

Every word reached somewhere he had long believed forgotten.

"It didn't feel frightening."

"It didn't feel strange."

"It simply..."

Shen Qiyao looked down.

"...felt beautiful."

"I stood there."

"I forgot where I was going."

"I forgot why I had come."

"I simply listened."

The veranda became silent once more.

Then Shen Qiyao smiled.

A small smile.

Almost embarrassed by his own memory.

"It sounds foolish."

He Qing shook his head immediately.

"No."

"...It doesn't."

Shen Qiyao continued.

"The flute ended."

"I thought..."

"...if I walked a little closer..."

"...perhaps I could ask who they were."

"I only took one step."

"Just one."

"And..."

He looked toward the grove.

"They disappeared."

No bitterness.

Only quiet wonder.

"As though moonlight had dissolved into mist."

"There was nothing left."

"No footprints."

"No voice."

"No white robes."

"Only bamboo."

"And lilies."

"I searched until dawn."

"I found no one."

A quiet laugh escaped him.

"When morning came..."

"I actually wondered if exhaustion had made me imagine the entire thing."

"But..."

His eyes drifted back toward the dark mountain.

"That night..."

"I heard the flute again."

"And the night after."

"And the night after that."

"The villagers all had different stories."

"Some said a ghost wandered the grove."

"Some called it a curse."

"They warned me never to follow the sound."

"They said no one who chased ghosts ever found peace."

He Qing finally spoke.

"...Yet you still followed."

Shen Qiyao answered without hesitation.

"Yes."

No explanation.

No apology.

Simply—

"Yes."

He Qing looked at him.

"...Weren't you afraid?"

A gentle breeze crossed the veranda.

The little silver bell gave another delicate chime.

Shen Qiyao smiled.

A lonely smile.

"Fear..."

He looked toward the endless darkness beyond the shrine.

"...has never stopped someone..."

"...who has already lost everything."

Silence settled once more.

The words did not sound tragic.

They sounded true.

After a very long while, Shen Qiyao spoke again.

"Everyone in the village feared the flute."

"They heard something frightening."

"I..."

He looked down at the bracelet around his wrist.

"...heard someone who sounded unbearably alone."

The bamboo whispered softly beneath the moon.

He Qing lowered his eyes.

His hands rested quietly upon his knees.

He said nothing.

Because, for the first time in a thousand years...

someone had finally spoken aloud the truth hidden within every note he had ever played.
