The little silver bell stirred once beneath Shen Qiyao's fingertips.
Its delicate chime faded into the night.
Neither of them spoke.
The tea had long since cooled.
Moonlight rested across the old wooden veranda, slipping quietly between the bamboo leaves. Beyond the shrine, the mountain had fallen completely silent. Even the distant sounds of the festival had disappeared, leaving only the whisper of the wind.
Shen Qiyao continued turning the tiny bell absentmindedly.
He did not seem aware he was doing it.
He Qing watched the movement for a long while before finally smiling.
A small smile.
One that carried none of his usual teasing.
"So..."
His voice was gentle.
"That's why you were planting lilies."
Shen Qiyao looked up.
For a moment he didn't answer.
His fingers paused upon the red thread.
"...Hm."
"I thought..."
He searched quietly for the right words.
"...if they bloomed..."
"...perhaps the fragrance would return."
He Qing lowered his gaze to the bracelet around Shen Qiyao's wrist.
"And if the fragrance returned..."
"...you thought the flute might return too."
Another quiet nod.
"Yes."
Silence settled between them again.
It wasn't awkward.
It simply waited.
Just as the bamboo had always waited for the wind.
After a while, He Qing asked another question.
"Why?"
Shen Qiyao blinked.
"You've wondered about that flute for almost two years."
"You searched for lilies."
"You stayed beside the bamboo grove."
"You listened every night."
He looked toward Shen Qiyao.
"Why?"
"...Why did you care so much?"
The question lingered.
Shen Qiyao did not answer immediately.
Instead, he looked toward the dark grove beyond the shrine.
The same grove where the flute had once drifted through the night like moonlight over water.
"I've asked myself that before."
His voice was almost lost beneath the wind.
"I never found an answer."
Another pause.
"I thought..."
"...perhaps I was simply curious."
He shook his head.
"But that wasn't it."
"No?"
Shen Qiyao smiled faintly.
"It wasn't the music."
His fingers unconsciously brushed against the silver bell again.
"I don't know much about music."
"I couldn't tell whether the melody was beautiful."
"...or difficult."
"...or even well played."
He Qing laughed softly.
"I think whoever played it would disagree."
A tiny smile touched Shen Qiyao's lips.
"Perhaps."
Then the smile slowly faded.
"But..."
"The more I listened..."
"...the less I noticed the melody."
He Qing became still.
"The melody stopped mattering?"
Shen Qiyao nodded.
"What remained..."
"...was the feeling."
His eyes rested quietly on the sea of bamboo.
"It always sounded..."
He searched for the word.
Not hurriedly.
Not carelessly.
As though choosing the wrong one would somehow betray the memory.
"...lonely."
The night became very still.
"It never sounded angry."
"It never sounded resentful."
"There was no hatred."
"No desire for revenge."
"It wasn't asking anyone to mourn."
His voice softened further.
"If anything..."
"...it sounded as though someone..."
"...had simply been waiting."
The wind wandered gently through the grove.
Thousands of bamboo leaves answered together.
"It wasn't loud."
"It never tried to call anyone."
"It simply..."
"...continued."
"No matter how many nights passed."
"No matter whether anyone listened."
He Qing lowered his eyes.
His hands, resting loosely around the teacup, tightened almost imperceptibly.
Shen Qiyao never noticed.
"I began listening differently after that."
"I stopped wondering what song it was."
"I started wondering..."
"...what kind of heart could make a sound like that."
Silence.
Long.
Gentle.
Then He Qing asked quietly,
"How?"
Shen Qiyao looked back at him.
"How could you hear something like that..."
"...from a flute?"
The question wasn't playful.
Nor doubtful.
It almost sounded...
hopeful.
Shen Qiyao thought for a long time.
"I don't know."
His answer came honestly.
"I truly don't."
Another breeze passed between them.
The little bell gave another soft chime.
Then, almost as if speaking only to himself, Shen Qiyao murmured,
"Maybe..."
He looked toward the endless darkness beyond the shrine.
"...because I was waiting too."
The words disappeared into the mountain night.
Neither of them spoke again.
One sat looking toward the bamboo.
The other looked quietly at the man beside him.
For the first time in a thousand years...
someone had listened to a lonely melody—
and heard the lonely heart behind it.
