Chapter 171 - Gary the Gift-Giver and the Rare Move!

Learning a move through psychic power is a no-cost method. The price, compared to a TM, should be half. (−50%)

But helping a Pokémon learn a move using psychic power consumes energy, and as a service provider, I charge a labor fee. So, raise the price by 20%. (+20%)

TM-based learning doesn't guarantee a 100% success rate—there's a risk of failure. But my method guarantees success, and if it doesn't work, the customer gets a refund. So, raise the price by another 20%. (+20%)

Even if a Pokémon learns a move via TM, there's still a delay before it can use the move effectively—it needs time to train and master it. With my psychic-aided learning, there's no mastery period. The moment it learns the move, it can use it immediately. That's worth another price bump. (+20%)

100% - 50% + 20% + 20% + 20% = 110%

"Looking at it this way," Ash calculated mentally, "my skill-learning service shouldn't be cheaper than TMs—it should cost more. A 10% increase, to be exact!"

"If I price it too low compared to market-standard TMs, people will accuse me of undercutting, malicious competition, or starting a price war. So pricing too low is a no-go."

"And if the price is too high, people might claim I'm making a profit from thin air. But that's not true! Psychic-aided skill learning consumes my energy. It's not a free service."

"Besides, I'm basically acting as a private tutor—don't teachers deserve to charge for their time?"

"That means setting the price lower than TMs is actually unreasonable. My online skill shop provides an advanced, personalized skill comprehension and learning service—not just selling items like TMs."

"And most importantly… this is a service, not a product. Helping Pokémon master new skills takes time. I can only take five orders a week at most."

"So pricing it higher than a TM makes perfect sense. 100% - 50% + 20% + 20% + 20% equals 110%. That's just a 10% premium over market value. Still pretty cheap, honestly."

"If it starts selling like hotcakes, I can gradually raise prices later. For now, let's go with 10% above TM market price."

Ash finalized the pricing model in his heart.

After sorting it out, he bumped up the preorder pricing and posted a notice on the front page of his shop.

The notice was simple and clear:

The Ash's Move Mastery Room will officially open tomorrow at 12:00 PM sharp. The announcement also explained the pricing structure and logic.

100% - 50% + 20% + 20% + 20% = 110%

Why it was initially set at half-price, and why it was raised afterward; what drawbacks TMs had, and what advantages his service provided—all neatly explained.

Ash was confident that customers would understand.

While Ash was eating lunch, the phone rang—it was from Professor Oak's lab, inviting him over after his meal.

"Mom, I'm heading to Professor Oak's place!"

"Alright," Delia replied while tidying up the dishes.

With her approval, Ash scooped up Froakie and Pichu, then stepped outside.

His house sat on the northern side of Pallet Town. Professor Oak's lab was perched on a hill at the very north end of the town, not far at all.

At a relaxed pace, it only took Ash five minutes to arrive.

"You're here, Ash!"

The moment he reached the lab gate, Gary came out to greet him, holding two Pokémon proudly in his arms.

Ash: (Froakie + Pichu)

Gary: (Squirtle + Eevee)

"Gary, you little show-off. What else can I say—you really are Professor Oak's grandson!"

"You only just got back from summer camp this morning, and it's only been a couple hours... and already, besides Squirtle, you've caught an Eevee?! One of the rarest Pokémon out there!"

"I'm dying of envy over here!" Ash stared at the Eevee in Gary's arms, practically with jealousy.

"Tell me honestly, Gary—you came here just to show off, didn't you?"

As he reached out to pet the Eevee, Ash gave Gary a suspicious side-eye.

"Whaaat? N-no way! Ahaha…"

Gary's words denied it, but that gleaming smile on his face said otherwise.

[Pokémon: Eevee]

Level: LV.5

Type: Normal

Nature: Timid

Abilities: Adaptability; (Hidden Ability: Anticipation)

Potential: Blue

Skills (Copyable):

Skilled: Tackle, Sand Attack

Novice: Covet, Helping Hand, Growl, Tail Whip

Egg Move:Wish

Ash immediately pulled up the system panel to examine the Eevee's data—and was shocked.

Gary's Eevee had a Blue potential—a full tier above the average Red-rank starter Pokémon like Squirtle.

It didn't quite match the level of Ash's Froakie or Pichu, but those two were touched by destiny itself—rare and uniquely blessed Pokémon.

Even so, Gary's Eevee was just one step below a pseudo-legendary hatchling in terms of rarity.

No matter how you looked at it, Ash couldn't help but want one.

But of course, Gary wasn't just a rival—he was Ash's childhood friend, born on the exact same day, raised in the same town, practically sharing diapers as toddlers. So while he was a little sour, he wasn't jealous.

He was genuinely happy for Gary.

"System, copy this Eevee's moves."

Seeing a new Pokémon always triggered Ash's internal reflex—like a seasoned trainer going on autopilot.

But what really got him excited was that this Eevee actually had the Egg Move: Wish—a powerful healing skill.

Even better, Pichu could learn it.

Electric-types were known for their speed and burst power, but not for sustained combat. In terms of recovery moves, they had very limited options.

The only notable one was Parabolic Charge, which could be learned by certain Pokémon in the Kalos region—like the Helioptile evolutionary line.

During the summer camp, Ash had already planned out a move progression for Pichu. He was hoping Green's Dedenne would reach LV.17 to see if it could learn Parabolic Charge. If so, Ash would copy it for Pichu.

If that didn't work, his backup plan was to find a Pokémon with Wish, since that was another healing move Pichu could learn.

What Ash didn't expect was that right after summer camp ended, before any serious training even began, he'd run into Gary's Eevee—and score a free Wish copy from the system.

A move this rare, this valuable—and he got it just like that.

"You really are my best bro."

After the system finished copying Eevee's skill set, Ash clapped Gary on the shoulder with heartfelt appreciation written all over his face.
