The staging grounds of Sector 4 were alive with a harsh, metallic energy. Massive overhead arc lamps cast stark, white shadows across hundreds of militia fighters as they checked their gear, packed heavy ammunition canisters, and modified their thermal survival rigs.
Danial stood atop an elevated iron catwalk overlooking the assembly square. The Gold Mark along his left arm pulsed in a slow, rhythmic idle, glowing softly beneath his dark coat sleeve. Beside him, Maya was reviewing tactical overlays on a holographic slate, her face illuminated by the cool blue light of the projections.
"We have three hundred combatants ready to deploy," Maya reported, scrolling through the squad rosters on her screen. "Master Oakes managed to recruit two dozen heavy pit-miners equipped with modified pneumatic breakers and steam-pressurized rivet rifles. They aren't formal military, Danial, but they know how to fight in close-quarters underground environments better than anyone."
"They don't need to be formal military," Danial said, watching the miners secure heavy steel plating to their chest rigs on the floor below. "They just need to hold the line while we breach Node 07. If the High Directorate cuts Sector 4's thermal feed from Node 07, the ambient temperature in the lower residential blocks will plunge to lethal levels within six hours."
Master Oakes limped up the catwalk stairs, his chest heavily bandaged underneath a thick leather coat, but his grip on his heavy rivet gun remained firm. He looked out over the assembled crowd with a mixture of pride and grim determination.
"The men are ready, Danial," Oakes said, spitting onto the iron grating beneath his boots. "Word got around about Sub-Level 9 and the creature. Everyone knows the Directorate is trying to starve us out. There's no fear left down here—only anger."
"Good," Danial said, turning toward the stairs. "We move out through the eastern salt transit tunnels before the Directorate's scouts can detect our troop movements."
Leaving the noisy staging grounds behind, the columns of militia filed smoothly into the dark, towering transit expanse connecting Sector 4 to Sector 5. Known as the Great Salt Sink, it was a vast, desolate subterranean plain where millions of years ago, before the surface oceans froze into stone and ice, deep brine deposits had settled, forming jagged salt spires that reached forty feet into the cavernous darkness.
The militia moved in three parallel columns, their boots crunching against the hard salt crust in rhythmic unison. Danial walked at the front of the center column, using the localized warmth of his Gold Mark to melt a clear path through the frozen mist hanging thick in the subterranean expanse.

"Look ahead," Maya whispered, lowering her handheld thermal binoculars. "The outer border posts of Sector 5 are completely dark. The Directorate has diverted all municipal power directly into Node 07's defense grid."
"They know we're coming," Oakes grunted, signaling for his squad of miners to spread out into a wide skirmish line. "They've pulled back their forward patrols and consolidated their forces around the primary reactor dome."
"They think we'll try a head-on siege at the main gate," Danial said, pausing as his Gold Mark flared bright gold along his arm. "We aren't going through the main gate. Node 07 has an auxiliary pressure discharge line that feeds directly into the cooling basin."
"The cooling basin is flooded with superheated brine," Maya noted, checking her schematics on her handheld screen. "Anyone stepping into that without high-tier thermal shielding would be boiled alive."
Danial raised his left arm, watching the intricate golden tracer lines glow brilliantly along his skin. "That's why I'm taking the forward team through the basin first. We open the internal access hatches from the inside and let the main force bypass the gate defenses."
Following Danial's lead, the forward strike team skirted the perimeter and slipped silently into the towering chamber built into the side of a massive volcanic basalt formation housing the cooling basin of Node 07. Thick iron pipes, six feet in diameter, ran along the high ceiling, venting massive plumes of pressurized steam into the cold subterranean air.

Danial, Maya, and an elite squad of six militia scouts crouched behind a rusted iron bulkhead overlooking the basin. Below them, a lake of bubbling, mineral-rich brine surged against the foundations of the reactor dome. On the far side of the water stood two automated Directorate sentry turrets, their red optical scanners sweeping back and forth across the steam-filled chamber.
"The turrets are hardwired into the facility's main power grid," Maya whispered, adjusting the sights on her long-range rifle. "If I shoot the power cables, the automated safety protocols will trigger an alarm across the entire sector."
"Don't shoot the cables," Danial instructed softly. "Cover me. I'm going through the brine."
Before Maya could protest, Danial stepped over the bulkhead and leaped directly into the steaming water.

As Danial hit the scalding water, the Gold Mark on his left arm flared with tremendous energy. Instead of burning him, the thermal energy of the boiling brine was sucked directly into his body, charging his internal conduits. The water around him instantly cooled to room temperature in a twenty-foot radius as he swam swiftly toward the far shore.
Rising from the steam like a phantom, Danial reached the iron walkway beneath the sentry turrets. With a swift thrust of his glowing left hand, he drove a wave of golden acoustic energy straight up into the chassis of both turrets simultaneously.
THUMP!
The internal targeting gyros of the turrets shattered silently, their red optical lenses winking out as their circuits shorted.
"Path is clear!" Danial signaled back across the basin. "Maya, bring the breaching team!"
With the cooling basin secured, the main Sector 4 militia poured through the auxiliary hatches, taking the Directorate garrison inside Node 07 completely by surprise as they surged into the inner facility.
Alarm sirens blared through the gleaming, sterile corridors of the reactor facility. Bright red warning lights flashed against the white ceramic walls as Directorate enforcers in heavy combat armor rushed to form defensive barricades along the central reactor catwalks.
"Hold the line!" a Directorate commander shouted over the loudspeaker system. "Do not let them reach the core control room! Execute Thermal Drain Protocol 7!"
"Not today!" Master Oakes roared, leading his miners into the central concourse.
PNEU! PNEU! PNEU!
Heavy copper rivets slammed into the Directorate's energy shields, shattering the defensive barriers under sheer kinetic force. The miners pressed forward with their pneumatic drills and steam hammers, turning the high-tech hallway into an intense close-quarters battleground.
Danial moved ahead of the main line like a golden spearhead. Every punch and stride he took released controlled bursts of kinetic shockwaves, throwing Directorate soldiers back against the reinforced walls and disabling their powered armor suits.

[WARNING: SECTOR 4 POWER GRID CRITICAL]
Danial smashed through the reinforced doors of the core control room, finding himself face-to-face with the Chief Technician of Node 07. The man was frantically typing commands into a wall-sized terminal console, trying to accelerate the power drain process.
"It's too late!" the technician sneered, stepping back as Danial approached. "We've already routed fifty thousand megawatt-hours of Node 07's thermal reserves to the surface spires! Sector 4 will freeze within hours!"
"Turn it off," Danial demanded, his voice echoing with the resonant acoustic power of the Abyss Engine.
"I can't!" the technician laughed hysterically. "The command sequence was locked by Archon Valerius himself! Only a Class-0 administrative signal can override the lock!"
Danial raised his left hand, stepping right up to the central terminal console. "Then it's a good thing I have one."
Danial slammed his left palm onto the administrative bio-scanner of the terminal. The Gold Mark burst into a brilliant, blinding flash of pure golden light. Intricate code sequences, written in the ancient language of the Selar, streamed across the terminal's main display, overwriting the Directorate's lock commands in a matter of seconds.

HUMMMMMMMM!
A massive, deep vibration resonated through the floor as Node 07's main turbines reversed their flow. The draining of Sector 4 stopped instantly, and a surge of warm, pressurized air began pumping back through the subterranean transit networks.
Outside the control room, the sound of gunfire began to die down as the remaining Directorate forces laid down their weapons, surrounded by the overwhelming numbers of the Sector 4 militia and liberated Sector 5 workers.
Maya walked into the control room, lowering her rifle as she looked at the green status displays filling the screen.
"We did it," she said softly, a tired smile spreading across her face. "Node 07 is under our control. Sector 4 is safe, and Sector 5 is liberated."
Master Oakes walked in behind her, leaning on his heavy rivet gun as he looked out the large glass window at the towering, glowing reactor core of Node 07.
"We didn't just save our home, Maya," Oakes said softly, turning to Danial with deep respect in his eyes. "We just took our first real piece of ground back from the High Directorate."
Danial turned away from the console, looking out at the united militia members gathering in the reactor hall below. His Gold Mark settled down into a steady, warm hum against his wrist.
"This is only the beginning," Danial said grimly. "When Archon Valerius realizes he lost Sector 5, he won't send small strike teams anymore. He'll bring the full weight of the surface army down upon us."
"Let them come," Maya said, her eyes burning with quiet defiance. "We aren't hiding in the dark anymore."
Danial nodded, stepping out onto the control room balcony to address the combined forces of Sector 4 and 5. The liberation of the lower levels was complete, but the true war for the future had only just begun.
