Scene 1: The Descent into the Ice
The air in the deep spillways of Sub-Level 9 did not feel like air at all. It felt like breathing liquid needles. Every intake of breath burned the back of Danial's throat, coats of thick white frost instantly forming along the fleece trim of his heavy wool collar. Beside him, Maya pulled her reinforced leather goggles down over her eyes, the glass immediately fogging until she adjusted the tiny brass heating coil wired directly into the outer frame.
"Thermal drop is steady," Maya said, her voice muffled behind three layers of thick wool scarf. Her fingers, clad in heavy insulated leather gloves, tapped against the glass side of her portable scanner. "Negative thirty-four degrees. We're well below the ambient heat envelope of Node 06. If the brine lines down here were still active, we'd be standing in five feet of supercooled slush."
"They aren't active," Danial replied, his boots crunching down into the frozen crust of the main tunnel floor.
He didn't need a scanner. His left arm—encased in the dark Selar weave sleeve—was humming softly, sending rhythmic vibrations straight up his collarbone. Beneath the dark fabric, the Gold Mark of the Abyss Engine pulsed with a steady, concentrated amber radiance, generating a sphere of localized warmth that kept his immediate radius six inches above freezing.
Behind them, five miners from Sector 4 moved in tight formation, their heavy iron-shod boots crunching through thick layers of crusted, ancient salt that had crystallized over the drainage grates decades ago. They were led by Master Oakes, who carried a heavy steam-pressurized rivet gun across his broad chest, a thick canvas pack of copper junction spikes slung over his shoulder.
"This whole place gives me the creeps," Oakes grunted, spitting onto the frozen floor. The spit turned to a solid white pebble before it even bounced against the salt rock. "My granddad used to tell stories about Level 9. Said back during the Great Cooling, when the High Directorate first locked the upper bulkheads, they used these spillways to flush fifty thousand tons of liquid slurry down from the surface. Half the old maintenance crews got trapped in the lower conduits."
"They weren't trapped by accident, Master Oakes," Maya said quietly, shining her heavy hand-lamp across the ribbed alloy walls of the tunnel. The beam of light illuminated long, frozen tendrils of black ice hanging from the ceiling like shattered glass stalactites. "The Directorate shut the emergency isolation valves from the Upper Spire to prevent thermal bleed. They sacrificed the lower maintenance levels to keep the surface domes warm."
Danial paused in his tracks, raising his left hand into the dim air. The gold tracer lines along his palm flared slightly brighter, casting long, sharp shadows across the arched tunnel walls.

"We're getting close to the central valve chamber," Danial said, turning back to face the squad. "This is where the Phase-Strikers breached our perimeter. Once we seal these three primary valves, the Directorate won't be able to drop silent units into Sector 4 without cutting through six feet of solid Lunar alloy."
"And if they try to blow the valves from above?" Oakes asked, slapping his hand against the side of his heavy rivet gun.
"Then the pressure blowback goes straight back up their own supply shafts," Danial said grimly. "Let's move."
Scene 2: The Vault of the Three Gates
The team pressed deeper forward through the narrowing conduit, the walls slowly changing from rough-hewn salt rock to massive, interlocking plates of pre-fracture alloy. This was old technology—architecture from before the Directorate took total control, built during the first era of Lunar terraforming when humanity still believed it could heat the world from beneath its crust.
As they stepped across the threshold into the central valve vault, the immense scale of the ancient installation became clear.
The vault was a vast circular room, easily three hundred feet across, with a soaring domed ceiling that disappeared into absolute darkness above. Three colossal iron wheels—each the size of a surface freight elevator—were set into the floor at equal intervals, connected to massive, frozen hydraulic pistons that disappeared down into the dark abyss of the salt sink below.
"Look at the seals," Maya whispered, shining her lamp directly at the base of the nearest valve assembly.
The heavy iron plates surrounding the valve stem were scored with deep, jagged cuts—the telltale signature of the Phase-Strikers' purple plasma cutters. The molten alloy had cooled into jagged, icicle-like ridges of dark metal.
"They cut the mechanical locking pins before they ascended," Danial observed, walking over to the central valve console. He ran his gloved hand over the rusted control panel. "They left the drainage channels wide open so follow-up strike teams could use the same vector."
"Can we turn 'em?" Oakes asked, stepping up to the huge iron wheel and grabbing one of the reinforced spokes. He pulled with all his physical weight, his thick boots slipping uselessly on the frozen salt floor. The wheel didn't budge a single millimeter. "It's locked tight! Frozen solid into the casing!"
"It isn't frozen by ice, Oakes," Danial said, stripping off his heavy leather glove and placing his bare left hand onto the central hub of the valve.
The moment his skin touched the cold alloy, the Gold Mark exploded with brilliant amber light. Golden veins of energy raced across the face of the wheel, tracer lines splitting outward through the rust and ice like liquid fire.

[NODE 06 REMOTE COUPLING: ESTABLISHED]
THUUUUU-DUMP!
A deep, subterranean thud echoed through the floor plates as the ancient internal heating coils inside the valve assembly roared back to life after forty years of silence. Clouds of thick, white steam erupted from the expansion joints around the wheel, hissing violently as they hit the sub-zero air of the vault.
The massive iron wheel shuddered, turning three inches to the left on its own.
"It's moving!" one of the miners yelled, stepping back in awe.
"Don't just stand there!" Oakes barked, snapping out of his shock. "Get the copper junction spikes ready! When the boss closes that gate, I want those locking gears welded shut forever!"
Danial closed his eyes, focusing his mind on the flow of power. The Abyss Engine inside his chest pulled thermal energy directly from Node 06 three miles away, channeling it down through his neural conduits and into the cold iron of the floor.

[VALVE 1 OF 3: SEALED]
CLANG!
A deafening metal-on-metal impact shook the chamber as the first massive drainage gate slammed down into its bed plate, sealing the first shaft completely.
"One down," Maya cheered, checking her handheld terminal. "Pressure on the upper Sector 4 floor plates just stabilized by twelve percent! The draft down here is dying!"
"Two more to go," Danial said, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead that froze the second it hit his collar. He stepped toward the second valve wheel in the center of the vault.
Scene 3: Awakening in Shaft 9-C
Before he could lay his hand upon the central hub of the second valve, his left arm gave a violent, sharp spasm.

[HIGH-DENSITY KINETIC SIGNATURE APPROACHING FROM LOWER STRATA]
"Danial?" Maya asked, noticing him freeze in place. Her hand instantly went to the hilt of her sidearm. "What is it?"
"Something is coming up Valve Shaft 3," Danial said, his voice dropping into a tense whisper. "It isn't coming from the surface."
"Not from the surface?" Oakes repeated, raising his rivet gun to his shoulder. "What do you mean? There's nothing below Level 9 except the dead salt void!"
"It's coming from below the void," Danial corrected, turning his gaze toward the open, gaping dark hole of the third valve shaft.
From the depths of the open third shaft came a strange, rhythmic clicking sound.
CLACK... CLACK... CLACK...
It wasn't the smooth, silent glide of the Directorate's Phase-Strikers. Nor was it the heavy, mechanical stomp of Vanguard exosuits. It sounded like hundreds of hard, chitinous legs striking against hollow metal piping.
Maya stepped up beside Danial, her scanner screen flashing wild red warning indicators.
"Biomarkers!" she gasped, her voice trembling. "Danial... those aren't human signals! They aren't Directorate!"
"Selar?" Oakes asked, his face turning pale under his layer of soot. "Feral Selar constructs?"
"No," Danial said, staring into the pitch-black opening of the shaft as his Gold Mark flared to life on its own, illuminating the gloom. "Not constructs. Scavengers."
Out of the darkness of Shaft 9-C crawled a creature the size of a heavy transport carriage.
Its chassis was made of rusted, segmented alloy plate that had fused over decades with organic bone and calcified salt crust. Four long, jointed legs tipped with razor-sharp steel spikes drove into the rock walls of the shaft, pulling its massive, elongated body upward with horrifying speed. Where its head should have been, there was only a glowing, cracked optic lens surrounded by four snapping mechanical mandibles.
[IDENTIFICATION: SELAR DREDGE-BUG (CLASS-3 RECOVERY UNIT)]
[STATUS: CORRUPTED / AUTONOMOUS MUTATION]
[DIRECTIVE: CONSUME HIGH-DENSE ENERGY SOURCES]
The creature's cracked lens locked onto Danial's glowing left arm.
It emitted a high-pitched, warbling acoustic shriek that shattered the frozen stalactites hanging from the ceiling, sending sharp shards of black ice raining down upon the floor plates.
SKRRRRRRRRR-EEEEECH!
Scene 4: The Battle for the Shafts
"Open fire!" Oakes screamed, pulling the trigger of his heavy rivet gun.
PNEU! PNEU! PNEU! PNEU!
Three-inch copper rivets slammed into the creature's armored head, bouncing off its hardened salt-crusted shell in brilliant bursts of orange sparks. The monster barely flinched. It leaped from the mouth of the shaft, its massive steel legs shattering the stone floor as it landed directly between Danial's group and the remaining two valve wheels.
"It wants the Mark!" Maya yelled, drawing two thermite charges from her harness. "It's drawn to the thermal output of Node 06!"
"Get back!" Danial shouted, stepping in front of the miners.
The Dredge-Bug lunged forward, its massive mandibles snapping together with enough force to cut a steel support beam in half.
Danial didn't retreat. He stepped into the creature's strike zone, his left arm thrusting forward as he drove a focused beam of pure, golden acoustic force directly into the creature's cracked optical lens.
[CLASS-0 DISCHARGE: SONIC WEAVER]
BOOM!
The point-blank sonic wave struck the creature's head like a heavy sledgehammer. The outer glass of its optic lens shattered into dust, and the beast reeled backward, thrashing its heavy, spiked legs wildly against the vault walls, collapsing a portion of the overhead stone archway.
"Oakes! Get the second valve locked!" Danial yelled over the roaring sound of the creature's thrashing. "Maya, cover the miners! I'll draw it away from the controls!"
"Danial, you can't fight that thing head-on in close quarters!" Maya shouted, tossing a thermite charge toward the creature's front joint.
FOOOOOOOM!
The thermite ignited with blinding white heat, burning through the rusted joint plate of the beast's front leg. The creature shrieked in agony, turning its thrashing focus away from Danial and sweeping its massive, spiked tail across the vault floor.
The heavy tail struck Master Oakes squarely in the chest.
"AAGH!" Oakes grunted as he was launched twenty feet across the room, slamming hard into the base of the second valve console, his rivet gun flying from his hands and skidding into the darkness.
"Oakes!" two of the miners screamed, rushing to his side.
"I'm... I'm breathing!" Oakes spat out blood, pushing himself up against the cold iron of the valve. "Get this damn wheel turned! Don't let the boy fight alone!"
Danial sprinted across the slippery salt floor, his boots leaving glowing golden footprints in the frost as he channeled power down into his feet. He leaped onto the creature's back, driving his left fist deep into the cracked armor seam where Maya's thermite had burned away the outer shell.
[DIRECT CORE INJECTION]
[OVERLOADING INTERNAL CIRCUITS]
"Sleep!" Danial roared, surging thirty thousand kilowatts of raw, unfiltered geothermal energy straight from Node 06 into the beast's mutated neural matrix.
Gold light burst from every seam in the creature's heavy chassis. Its eyes, joints, and rusted back-plates glowed like a furnace as the immense voltage fried its ancient, corrupted processing cores.
The Dredge-Bug gave one final, low metallic groan before its legs buckled beneath it. It collapsed onto the vault floor with a heavy, final thud, steam pouring from its open joints.
Scene 5: The Discovery and the Next Horizon
Danial dropped down from the smoking carapace of the creature, landing on one knee as he panted heavily, his left arm trembling from the massive energy throughput.
[SYSTEM WARNING]
[NODE 06 DRAIN HIGH: 48% CAPACITY UTILIZED]
[RECOVERING STABILITY...]
Maya ran to his side, helping him stand as she wrapped a fresh thermal band around his wrist. "You pushed too much power through the mark at once, Danial."
"I'm fine," Danial grunted, looking over at Master Oakes, who was being supported by two miners as they successfully slammed the third valve wheel completely shut.
CLANG! CLANG!
With both remaining valves sealed and the copper junction spikes welded into the gear teeth, the deep draft chilling Sub-Level 9 died away completely. The temperature inside the vault slowly began to rise as Node 06's ambient heat began to reclaim the subterranean spillways.
"The lower sector perimeter is secure," Maya declared, her terminal showing three solid green lock icons across the Sub-Level 9 diagnostic map. "The Directorate's backdoor into Sector 4 is permanently closed."
Master Oakes walked over, limping slightly, but holding a recovered Directorate data-slate he had pulled from the fallen Phase-Striker's chest core earlier.
"We sealed the back door, Danial," Oakes said, his rough face wearing a dark, triumphant grin. "But take a look at this transmission log we decoded from the cyborg's central drive."
Danial took the slate, his glowing finger scrolling through the decrypted surface communications.

Danial looked up from the screen, his cold gray eyes meeting Oakes's and Maya's.
"They aren't sending another fleet down the main shaft," Danial said softly. "They're using Node 07 in Sector 5 to drain our thermal grid from the side."
"Then we don't wait for them to cut our power," Maya said, her hand resting firmly on her holster.
"No," Danial agreed, turning his back on the sealed valves of Sub-Level 9 as he began the long climb back toward the warmth of Sector 4. "We gather the militia. Tomorrow, we march on Sector 5."
