"Mm… don't hit me," Noel murmured again in his sleep.
Summer's heart clenched. She gently brushed her palm over his forehead. "It's okay," she whispered. "No one is hurting you. I'm here. You are safe."
Gradually, his restless murmurs faded, and he sank into a deeper sleep. His temperature started coming down.
Summer breathed a sigh of relief. "The medicine has started showing its effects."
She picked up the empty bowl and stepped out of the room, finally.
Ding-dong.
Summer paused, glancing toward the door. 'Did Gideon come back already?' she wondered.
After setting the bowl on the dining table, she walked over and opened the door. The moment she saw who stood outside, her body went rigid.
Danica.
The bruises on Noel's body flashed through Summer's mind.
"You?" Summer's voice turned cold instantly. "What are you doing here?"
"Who do you think you are to speak to me like that?" Danica snapped. She shoved Summer hard enough to make her stumble backward.
