Sophie could no longer speak. She had lost both the strength and the need to say anything…
The past she had so painstakingly tried to bury forever four years ago had now proven to be utterly futile.
"I've always wondered," he said to her, "if I hadn't run into you at that convenience store that day—or if, after you were taken out by security at C&C, you hadn't met my father right at the entrance—would we still have fallen in love?"
Sophie closed her eyes. This time, she wished she never had to open them again.
"If we hadn't fallen in love, would the 'past' still matter so much to us? We might have simply been half-siblings sharing the same father… or perhaps complete strangers with no blood relation at all, just tangled in some strange, complicated connection… I believe the latter is far more likely. But no matter what the relationship really was, we wouldn't have suffered like this."
"What are you trying to say? What else do you know?" she asked.
