The conversation with Ashley Greene was so unimportant that Haley should have forgotten all about it as soon as it was over. But now it was days later and Ashley's words still popped up in Haley's mind with a frequency that was worrying. When she thought of the other woman's words, Haley found herself questioning and the questions were not questions that she would have asked herself without Ashley insinuating that she would have been a better fit for Deacon Roth than Haley was.
Why had the woman thought that? What did she think she had that Haley did not?
In fact, what did Roth have that had Ashley Greene thinking he was much better than Haley? That Haley did not deserve the man. Once the question was asked, Haley could not find it in herself to just sit back and relax without knowing the answer. And so without meaning to, Haley found herself paying more attention to Roth.
