When Qian Renyue awoke once more, she found herself sitting inside a swaying carriage. She couldn't understand where she was—wasn't she in the middle of a divine examination?
Qian Renyue raised her hands and looked at them. Although she had practiced swordsmanship for many years, because of the nature of her martial soul—and because her elder sister doted on her and often brought her medicinal herbs and skincare items—her hands had always been fair, tender, and slender. But now, these hands were rough and covered in calluses.
She then looked down at herself. Her original white short skirt and white long boots had turned into an unfamiliar, complicated dress, along with a pair of exquisitely embroidered, delicate cloth shoes.
Qian Renyue touched her head. Her once loose long hair had been piled high, adorned with various gold, silver, and vermilion hairpins.
A sense of unease rose in her heart. Feeling nervous, she spread her hands again. She could not sense the circulation of soul power within her body at all. Her martial soul seemed to have disappeared.
The reality before her made Qian Renyue begin to doubt whether this was truly the third trial of the divine examination—or if she had actually transmigrated. Perhaps her past journey in the Douluo Continent had merely been an illusory dream, while what lay before her now was reality.
Just as Qian Renyue was confused and somewhat frightened, the carriage came to a stop.
A crisp voice rang out, "Your Highness, we've arrived at the Princess's residence. Please disembark."
Qian Renyue lifted the curtain and stood on the carriage step, looking at everything before her. It was all so unfamiliar—yet also seemed strangely familiar, as if she had lived here for a very long time.
Amid her confusion and doubt, Qian Renyue was escorted by the crowd into the Princess's residence.
That night, Qian Renyue had a very, very long dream—one that seemed to concern her entire life.
This place was called the Qianjing Dynasty, and she was the youngest daughter born to the emperor and empress.
Here, men could have three wives and four concubines. Children born of the main wife were called legitimate offspring, while those born of concubines were called illegitimate. And she was the only—and the youngest—legitimate princess of the Qianjing Dynasty.
From childhood, the little princess had been plagued by illness. The emperor and empress cherished her dearly, and though extremely reluctant, for the sake of her health they cruelly sent her to the Medicine King Valley.
After arriving at the Medicine King Valley, the little princess's health rapidly improved. Because of her outstanding talent, the Valley Master of the Medicine King Valley accepted her as a disciple. From then on, she followed the Valley Master in studying medicine.
The empress fell ill with longing for her daughter. Unable to bear his wife's suffering, the emperor adopted an orphan girl as a goddaughter and bestowed upon her the title of princess, letting her take the little princess's place in showing filial piety to the empress, while enjoying everything that originally belonged to the little princess.
The country of the little princess was the Qianjing Dynasty, which was not very powerful. Now, a strong neighboring state sought to marry a princess of Qianjing. Unwilling to part with their daughter again, the emperor and empress thought of the daughter fostered in the Medicine King Valley.
After the little princess was brought back, she was forbidden—under the excuse of proper princess upbringing—from practicing medicine or saving lives. They favored the adopted princess at every turn, and despite Qian Renyue's opposition, insisted on sending her off for a political marriage.
On the journey for the marriage alliance, a plague broke out in a prefecture of the Qianjing Dynasty. The little princess abandoned the marriage procession and went alone into the epidemic area to provide treatment. In the end, she turned the tide and saved the entire prefecture's people.
Out of gratitude for Qian Renyue's lifesaving grace, the people built a Medicine King Bodhisattva Temple to worship her.
However, when this matter reached the capital, the emperor and empress reprimanded the little princess for disregarding the greater situation and abandoning the lives of people in both nations, merely to satisfy herself.
The people she had once saved believed it. They thought the little princess had not truly wanted to save them, but only to escape the marriage alliance. That she saved them today was merely so they could be sent to the battlefield in the future.
Thus, the Medicine King Bodhisattva Temple that had once been erected was torn down by them, and they loudly cursed and condemned the little princess.
In the end, amid her parents' accusations and the people's furious abuse, the little princess died on the road of the marriage alliance.
When Qian Renyue awoke, her memories of the Spirit Hall had already faded greatly. She only remembered that she was now this little princess of the Qianjing Dynasty—Qian Yue'er.
When Qian Renyue woke up again, it was already noon the next day. Having her head suddenly filled with new memories made her feel dizzy.
"Your Highness, today is the day to enter the palace to pay respects to His Majesty and Her Majesty. How can you sleep until now? This is a great disrespect. When we enter the palace later, this servant will definitely report truthfully to Their Majesties."
An elderly woman with a sharp, mean expression stood to the side, chattering endlessly.
Already having a headache, Qian Renyue grew even more irritated and slammed the table, shouting, "Shut up!"
The old woman finally closed her mouth, but her eyes were filled with dissatisfaction, her face clearly unconvinced.
Qian Renyue rubbed her throbbing head, felt hunger in her stomach, and asked, "Where do we eat?"
The old woman curled her lips and said in a mocking tone, "Because Your Highness is to enter the palace to pay respects to Their Majesties, the Princess's residence has not prepared any meals for you today. Please wash and dress properly and enter the palace early to pay your respects."
Qian Renyue sighed helplessly. Since there was no food, she could only do as the old woman said and go meet her biological parents first.
"Then let's go." Qian Renyue stood up directly and strode outside.
Seeing that Qian Renyue neither washed nor changed into court attire, the sharp-tongued old woman sneered in disdain, but did not speak to stop her. In any case, the one who would lose face later would be Qian Renyue herself.
On the way to the palace, Qian Renyue learned from her memories that this society was a feudal one. Although there were no slaves, nobles and servants still existed. The old woman who had spoken sarcastically earlier was called a momo—a senior palace maid assigned to teach her palace rules and etiquette, as well as to take care of her.
After riding in the swaying carriage for quite some time, then walking for a long while, Qian Renyue was finally led by palace maids to the Weiyang Palace, where the imperial family resided.
Qian Renyue stood at the entrance, waiting for a maid to go inside and announce her arrival. Only after the empress summoned her could she enter.
It was noon, the sun blazing overhead. Qian Renyue stood under the scorching sun, waiting for the empress's summons.
For some reason, Qian Renyue's hearing was still very sharp. Standing at the entrance of Weiyang Palace, she clearly heard how the momo embellished her complaints before the empress, and how the empress and the adopted princess, Qian Yao'er, shared a harmonious, mother-and-daughter meal.
She glanced at the sun overhead and touched her stomach—she was truly hungry. Since the empress clearly did not welcome her, Qian Renyue did not intend to indulge her. She turned to leave, planning to return and eat first. If the empress did not want to see her, she could come another day.
Just as Qian Renyue turned to go, a palace maid came to call her. Qian Renyue sighed, thinking that since she had already come, she might as well go in and avoid another trip later, and followed the maid into Weiyang Palace.
