Chapter 3 - CHAPTER 3 : the sea and chained

The Chained.

The ship creaked like a living thing. Every wave struck its hull with the sound of a closing door. Lyra sat chained among dozens of other captives, the smell of salt and pitch thick around them. Above, the sails groaned as the wind dragged them farther from the only land she had ever known.

For two days she did not speak. Her body moved because it must, but her thoughts were ash and smoke. Each time she closed her eyes she saw the valley burning—her mother's lifeless body, her father's head, the narrow path that led to the river. All gone.

On the third night a storm came, and the sky broke open. Lightning turned the sea white, and rain poured through the cracks in the deck. The guards retreated to shelter, leaving the prisoners to fend for themselves. Lyra wrapped her arms around her knees and whispered to whatever gods still cared to listen.

When dawn came, the world was quiet again. One of the slavers—an older man with a scar down his cheek—walked among the captives, counting. He stopped when he reached her.

"You're still alive," he muttered, almost surprised.

"I do not die easily," she answered.

He looked at her for a long moment, then moved on. That was the first time since the fires that she heard her own voice without shaking. During the period of feeding, they gave the slaves small potion of porridge soup and a slice of bread by looking at the soup it turns stomach Lyra who haven't eaten anything for four days couldn't help herself but draw it in one go. The ship docked in the western empire's harbor under a blood-red sunrise. The slavers spoke of profit as if they carried spices instead of souls. The captives were marched through gates of iron into a fortress whose courtyards echoed with the sound of cheering crowds.

This was the Arena of Veyra, a place where the desperate fought to amuse those who had never known hunger.

Lyra learned quickly what kind of world she had entered. The overseers fed the strongest and left the weak to fade. Every week, the prisoners were forced into contests meant to prove their obedience and endurance. Lyra has been a general daughter but she was peted on her entire life, she have not fought anyone before so how will she survive this.

On the first day two people was pick to go out and fight but only one return later. The second set was a man who looks like he has been fighting since he was born, everyone in that place respected him they called him Hunt, for the two days she has been there he has seen him often bullied others sometimes he forcefully collect there food leaving them with empty stomach. Hunt was chosen and one boy who was shipped the same day with Lyra looking at the boy and the man she knew he won't survive the game as Lyra predicted he didn't make it while Hunt came back as if nothing happened. When it was dinner period everyone was eating expect Lyra who was practicing with wooden sword because she know that she was not chosen today what about tomorrow and she is not planning to die on her first attempt rather she wants to survive.

" You are holding the sword wrong"

Lyra was Stunned for a moment before she turned and looked at person who spoke to her surprise it was hunt standing not far away relaxing his back on edge of the wall munching his bread as if nothing concerns him with the world, she took a a deep breath before she ask

"How am supposed to hold it?

" Don't hold it like you want to cut wood

branches rather hold it like you want to cut the tree itself "

Lyra rehold the sword but it almost the same thing with the first one, hunt looked at her but couldn't help it but to put down his bread to help her, for six months he has been here he never see anyone who had a strong will to survive sometimes what he encounter is people who are depressed and lost focus of life but looking at this little mouse she still want to survive so why don't he give her a little lift. He moved to where the wooden sword are kept pick one and Swinging it around, he moved close to her so she will see how he is holding the sword.

" First gripe the sword and let it balance and bland with your hand then move your right leg front and left leg back to balance your body so when you swing the sword you won't fall front or back like you use to"

Lyra follow the instruction and swing her sword for the first time she swing her sword she didn't fall back or front. They continue to practice until with Wooden weapons at first later, steel. The hunt called it training. Lyra called it survival. On the fifth day Lyra was called unlike other that fight their fellow slave she was called to fight a knight who was known for his ruthless behavior. Lyra was scared at first but when she remember her family and her village she know that she had to do anything Humanly possible to stay alive. Hunt who was standing by the side gave her a nod and little smile but there was uneasy in his eyes but Lyra smiled brightly at him this is the first time he has seen her smile before.

The crowd's excitement is palpable! When Lyra enters the arena, the cheers and chants fill the air. As Sir Edward steps forward, the crowd's enthusiasm reaches a fever pitch. The noise is deafening, with spectators whistling, stomping their feet, and shouting his name.

The energy is electric, and the anticipation is building.Lyra's initial fear gives way to determination as she gazes out at the sea of expectant faces. She takes a deep breath, feeling the weight of her resolve settle in. With a fierce glint in her eye, she squares her shoulders and readies herself for the battle ahead.

The crowd's roar becomes a distant hum as Lyra focuses on her goal: survival. She recalls her training, her strength, and her wits. With a steely resolve, she prepares to face Sir Edward and whatever challenges lie ahead. Although she has been practicing and hunt thought her well but this is her first fight and she needs to survive to avenge her family.

Lyra's skills are put to the test as she faces off against the seasoned knight, Sir Edward. She knows this is her first real fight, and the stakes are high. Survival is her top priority.

The crowd's cheers fade into the background as Lyra focuses on her opponent. She takes in Sir Edward's stance, his sword arm strong and confident. She notes the way he moves, his weight shifting subtly as he prepares to strike.

Lyra's heart pounds in her chest, but she channels her nerves into focus. She recalls her training, her movements becoming fluid and precise. As Sir Edward charges forward, Lyra dodges to the side, her sword flashing in the sunlight.

Lyra continues to dodge Sir Edward's powerful blows, using her agility and quick reflexes to avoid his sword strikes. She weaves and parries, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

As Sir Edward tires slightly from his intense attack, Lyra sees her chance. She spots a small opening and seizes it, landing a swift kick that sends Sir Edward stumbling back.

The crowd erupts in cheers, sensing the tide of the battle shifting. Lyra seizes the momentum, pressing her advantage.

Lyra charges forward, unleashing a rapid series of sword strikes that Sir Edward struggles to parry. As he blocks one blow, she aims for another opening, her sword flashing in the sunlight. With a swift and precise motion, Lyra knocks Sir Edward's sword arm aside and disarms him. The crowd goes wild as Sir Edward stumbles back, momentarily stunned.

Lyra stands over him, her sword raised, ready to deliver the final blow. The crowd holds its collective breath, sensing the end of the battle.Lyra's sword slices through the air, and with a swift motion, she delivers the final blow. Sir Edward's body slumps to the ground, defeated. The crowd erupts in a mix of cheers and gasps, acknowledging Lyra's skill and strength.

As the dust settles, Lyra stands victorious, her chest heaving with exertion. She's alive, and she's won. But at what cost? The arena falls silent, awaiting her next move.

The King of Slaves' surprise turns to shock as he watches Lyra emerge victorious over Sir Edward, a formidable opponent. As Lyra returns, she's met with a mix of applause and curious gazes. But beneath her stoic exterior, Lyra's emotions churn.

The memory of Sir Edward's daughter's anguished cry as Lyra took his life echoes in her mind, stirring up painful memories of her own past. Guilt and regret threaten to overwhelm her, but she pushes them down, focusing on survival.

The King of Slaves approaches her, his expression unreadable his words hang in the air, "I didn't expect you to survive, let alone defeat Sir Edward. You have skills." Lyra's gaze meets his, a mix of wariness and defiance.

The King of Slaves' expression remains inscrutable, but a hint of curiosity flickers in his eyes. "Your skills are... impressive. But this isn't over. You'll face more challenges in the arena. Are you prepared to fight again?"

Lyra's thoughts flash to the battles ahead, the endless cycle of violence, and the weight of her past But she knows that runing won't save her so why don't she fight her way out.

Lyra's eyes flash with a fierce determination, her gaze piercing the King of Slaves like a cold blade. "I'm ready to fight whenever you're ready to pit me against another opponent." Her voice is steady, laced with a hint of challenge.

The King of Slaves' expression remains unreadable, but a subtle nod acknowledges her response. "Very well, Lyra. You'll fight again soon. Prepare yourself."

With that, he turns and exits the arena, leaving Lyra to her thoughts. The crowd's cheers and chants fade into the background as Lyra's mind turns inward, focusing on the battles ahead.

Lyra trudges back to the dungeon, her footsteps heavy with the weight of her emotions. The image of Sir Edward's daughter, her anguished cry, and the memory of taking her father's life continue to haunt Lyra. She can't shake off the feeling of guilt and regret that's been building up inside her. As she enters the dimly lit dungeon, the familiar faces of her fellow fighters and slaves turn towards her. Some nod in respect, while others whisper words of congratulations. But Lyra's not in the mood for any of it. Hunt, who was standing against the well breath a sign of relief, he was happy but he still keeps a calm expression. Although she is not the only person who he had met that went to the arena and never returns but there is a fire he sees in her and because of that he didn't want her to die early. He notices Lyra's somber mood and approaches her.

"Hey, Lyra, you did great out there," he says, his voice soft and understanding. "What's eating you up?"

Lyra's gaze meets Hunt's, and for a moment, they just look at each other. Then, she asks, "What's it like for you, fighting in the arena? Have you ever lost someone close to you in here?"

Hunt's expression turns somber, and he leans in, his voice barely above a whisper. "I've lost count of how many friends I've lost in the arena. It's a different kind of fight every time. You have to be ready to die, or you'll definitely lose."

Lyra nods, her eyes clouding over. Hunt notices the turmoil in her eyes and gently presses, "You okay, Lyra? You're not yourself."

Lyra takes a deep breath and opens up to Hunt about her feelings. "It's just... Sir Edward's daughter... she reminded me of someone. The way she screamed when I... it just brought back memories."

Hunt listens intently, his expression empathetic. "You're not alone, Lyra. We've all been there. We've all lost something or someone in this place. But you did what you had to do to survive."

Lyra looks at Hunt, searching for reassurance.Lyra's expression softens slightly as Hunt's words offer a glimmer of comfort. She nods, feeling a sense of solidarity with him. "You're right. Survival is the only option here. It's just... it's hard to shake off the memories."

Hunt nods understandingly. "I know. It's a weight we carry with us. But for now, let's focus on staying alive and getting through this together, okay?"

Lyra smiles faintly, feeling a small sense of gratitude towards Hunt. "Thanks for listening, Hunt. It helps."

As they share a moment of understanding hunt look at her start to develop something that he have feat before, he wonder what it might be .
