"The simplest spell is Lumos, a spell that creates a small ball of light to illuminate the surroundings," Cadmus said, moving his hand. A ball of white light floated above his palm. It looked perfectly round, like a pearl, showcasing Cadmus's flawless control.
"Professor, what language is that?" Gaemon raised his hand and asked, his tone filled with curiosity and a thirst for knowledge that made Cadmus smile.
Pulling a book from his bag, Cadmus tossed it to Gaemon, who caught it carefully and delicately. "It's Latin, an extinct language in this world. This language holds great power, which is why it was used to recite incantations."
Gaemon looked at the book's cover and saw the title: The Translation of Latin to the Common Tongue. Cadmus Peverell.
"Study it well; it will be important for you," Cadmus said with a smile. He wasn't lying; Latin really was important. He couldn't understand why there wasn't a Latin class at Hogwarts. This language was what composed the entire magical system of civilization, yet people only memorized the names of spells instead of actually learning the language.
Gaemon nodded and hugged the book, showing how much it meant to him. Looking at Cadmus, he asked with an expectant tone, "Professor, may I try this magic?"
"Of course," Cadmus said, looking at Gaemon with an amused glint in his eyes. Lumos was a beginner's spell for a reason. It was easy to speak and control. Even novice mages who had never touched magic would find it relatively easy to cast.
However, there was a problem with wizards who had never touched magic or even known of its existence. Most didn't believe they could do something extraordinary. As Cadmus had said before, magic is determination, will, and imagination; without those, even magic couldn't become what it was born to be.
Gaemon looked at his own hand and murmured nervously, "Lumos."
...
There was nothing—no light, nothing at all.
Daenerys also looked curiously at Gaemon. From what Cadmus had said, the magic was easy and suitable for beginners.
"Gaemon, I told you that magic is determination, will, and imagination. What were you doing when you tried to cast the spell?" Cadmus asked with a smile.
"I thought it was unlikely to happen," Gaemon replied truthfully. From Cadmus's words, he understood where he had gone wrong.
Gaemon held out his hand and whispered, "Lumos."
A light flickered in Gaemon's hand, blinking like a weak flame as if it might go out at any moment, but the boy had truly cast the spell.
Looking at the light in his hand, Gaemon's face transformed with contagious joy; he stared at that light with a look of wonder and fascination.
Daenerys also looked at the light in Gaemon's hand with a touch of envy. Glancing to the side and seeing that Cadmus was paying attention to Gaemon, she rose from the sofa and walked to the bedroom window.
Opening the window, she looked back, and seeing that no one was paying attention to her, the princess held out her hand and whispered, "Lumos."
In the next moment, she understood exactly why Cadmus hadn't let her cast any spells. As soon as the incantation ended, the massive amount of magic within Daenerys surged forward like an uncontrolled tsunami.
What happened next left Daenerys shocked.
An extremely blinding light appeared in her hand and flew toward the sky.
A second sun appeared above King's Landing.
"Daenerys..." Hearing the voice behind her, Daenerys turned with an innocent and lovely smile. She looked at Cadmus, who had a grim expression, with a cute look on her face.
"Cadmus, you look so handsome today," Daenerys said, maintaining her smile while the second sun above King's Landing caused complete chaos in the city.
Cadmus didn't respond to Daenerys's compliments and transfigured a flower into a paper tube. Without any hesitation, he began to swat the princess's head.
"I said you weren't to cast any spells until you finished your magic control training," Cadmus said in a quite unhappy tone. Looking at the second sun above the city, he was left speechless and swatted Daenerys's head with the paper tube even faster.
"Don't hit me! You're messing up my hair!" Despite Cadmus's relentless attacks, Daenerys felt no pain and spoke in a rather sad tone. The time she had spent combing her hair was significant, but it was all ruined by Cadmus's relentless assault.
Gaemon looked at the weak, flickering light in his hand and then at the second sun above King's Landing, feeling for the first time that the gods had their favorites. His talent, compared to Daenerys's, was an abyss that couldn't be bridged.
He felt like he didn't want to have lessons with his aunt; having someone so brilliant by his side was quite stressful and discouraging.
Looking once more at Daenerys, who didn't seem repentant, Cadmus let out a tired sigh. "Cut off the flow of magical energy, or someone will think the gods have sent divine punishment from the heavens."
Daenerys looked at the giant ball of light above the city and believed Cadmus's words. People were superstitious.
After a while, the ball of light disappeared completely, and Daenerys sighed in relief. She pursed her lips and finally believed Cadmus's words. She was a weapon of destruction who didn't know how to control her own power.
That wouldn't be a bad thing on a battlefield where the enemy was before her, but once she was surrounded by allies...
Seeing that Daenerys understood how powerful she was, Cadmus showed a satisfied expression and looked at Gaemon, who was wearing a discouraged and desolate look.
"Don't worry. Even if you're a bit average in terms of talent, average people can improve," Cadmus said, comforting the young prince.
Daenerys looked at Cadmus with a strange look and then at her nephew's even grimmer face. "You're terrible at comforting people," she whispered into Cadmus's ear.
The mage looked at Gaemon's face but didn't feel anything was wrong with his words. Gaemon was a genius to ordinary people, but in his eyes, he was average. His amount of magic didn't even reach 1% of Daenerys's, let alone Cadmus's.
However, being average wasn't a bad thing in Cadmus's eyes. Only when someone wants to improve can they become a better version of themselves. Facing one's own flaws and correcting them was essential for growth and maturity.
"Don't be sad. Learn and immerse yourself in the knowledge of magic. If there's one thing magic can do, it's perform true miracles," Cadmus said with a smile, looking at Gaemon's face, which was returning to normal and showing a determined expression.
"Thank you, Professor." Gaemon knew that comparing himself to Daenerys was a recipe for discouragement and sadness.
"Let's continue the lesson." Cadmus nodded and began teaching the basics to the young prince. Gaemon listened intently, as if wanting to memorize every word that came out of the court mage's mouth.
After the lesson, Gaemon left the room with an excited expression, full of satisfaction. Magic was more interesting than he had expected.
Cadmus looked at Daenerys and remembered he had to perform the purification ritual on all members of House Targaryen, especially the women.
"Dany, did your mother say anything about the blood ritual?" Cadmus asked in a calm tone.
Daenerys looked at Cadmus with a genuinely confused expression and shook her head. "I don't know what you're talking about."
Honestly, Cadmus hesitated to tell Daenerys the truth. Resentment and hatred were things Daenerys didn't need, especially with the massive amount of magic inside her. Cadmus didn't doubt for a moment that Daenerys, a hormone-filled teenager, might do something crazy in a moment of rage and fury.
However, Cadmus didn't like to lie, especially to his future wife. After hesitating for a moment, the mage decided to tell the truth.
Daenerys's expression shifted from confusion to incredulity, pain, and then fury. Knowing that her mother had suffered so much and that the same poison was running through her own veins at this moment, waiting for the right time to kill her—to say she was furious was an understatement.
With Daenerys's emotions, her magic began to move uncontrollably. The most obvious sign of this was the temperature, which was rising by the moment. This phenomenon wasn't just affecting the room, but the entire castle and a good part of the city as well.
Daenerys finally understood why her brother and mother were attacking the Faith of the Seven, as well as the Maesters. It was vengeance—vengeance for the dead sons and daughters, for all the babies, children, and women of House Targaryen over the centuries.
"I'm going to kill them," Daenerys said in a tone tinged with fury; she was truly enraged. She knew how important children were to her mother. Her mother had suffered for a long time, even crying in secret many nights.
"I know you will, but we have a plan, and we can't just cause too much chaos," Cadmus said in a gentle tone, pulling Daenerys into his arms and delicately stroking the princess's hair.
Daenerys hugged Cadmus, but the white flames in her eyes intensified like never before, looking as if they could burn the entire planet if necessary.
Thirty minutes later,
Feeling that the temperature had settled, Cadmus asked with a smile, "Calmed down?"
Daenerys didn't answer and simply nodded.
"Let's lie down on the bed and get some sleep." Picking Daenerys up in his arms, Cadmus stood and walked to the bed.
Instead of a moment of intimacy, Cadmus simply hugged Daenerys and used her as his personal pillow.
Daenerys looked at her fiancé and couldn't help but think he was cute, trying to help her feel as comfortable as possible. Nevertheless, she closed her eyes and accepted sleep. She truly felt like she had been on the verge of losing control.
