Chapter 43 - Chapter 42 - The Burning of Duskendale

Seeing the gigantic pale demonic fire serpent roaring as it burned the entire city, Cadmus could see the smoke rising towards the sky, long and winding trails of smoke. The terrible smell of ashes hung in the air.

Cadmus's expression did not change, and he narrowed his eyes, feeling a faint magical energy within the burning city. A smile appeared on his lips. 'It seems the hidden little mouse finally couldn't contain itself and is spying on what I'm doing.'

'It just remains to be seen where he or she is.' Cadmus's magical senses were extraordinary; he could feel that he was being spied on by something, probably a magical creature focused on espionage and assassination. He was very confident in his senses; a faint murderous intent emanated from the spy.

"Since you want to watch, I'll let you watch the greatest show of your life, little mouse." Cadmus murmured. He looked at the city burning in demonic blue flames with a calm gaze. Even with his exceptional control, the flames still melted about ten percent of the city.

Extending both hands and making them into a ball shape when the fingers touched, Cadmus began to mold the Fiendfyre spell again. With his movements, all the blue flames in the city began to gather above the city, gradually forming a fireball.

Unlike other fire spells, Fiendfyre could not be extinguished normally. It was black magic for a reason; it was uncontrollable for amateur wizards and unquenchable in a normal way. It was a magic that could even damage a Horcrux, which was said to be almost indestructible.

If Cadmus let the demonic fire burn in the city, it would take weeks or even months to gradually extinguish itself.

Seeing the blue fireball grow rapidly, Cadmus began to compress the fireball, and in the next moment, the gigantic fireball, which easily had a diameter of two kilometers, began to shrink.

With each meter shrunk, the core of the fireball changed color slightly, from a sky blue to an increasingly pale and immaculate blue. In the end, the fireball shrank to the size of a baseball, floating above his hand.

The entire fire orb was white, and if one looked closely into the orb, they would see demonic snakes, wolves, serpents, and dragons and griffins floating inside the orb. All roared furiously, full of murderous and destructive intentions.

Looking at the orb floating stably above his hand, Cadmus smiled satisfactorily. He was someone who liked to visit others' homes with a gift; how could he show up empty-handed at someone's house?

Looking at Dun Fort, Cadmus simply jumped off Mitra and began to fall towards the ground with his hair trembling wildly. Just like his hair, the green cape on his shoulders fluttered while making a snapping sound in the air.

Seeing Dun Fort getting closer and closer, the mage smiled gently and made a gun sign with his right hand. Aiming at the castle, he murmured. "Boom!"

In the next moment, the white orb advanced at an extremely high speed in a straight line. If someone looked up, they would see an extremely white beam of light hitting the castle, and in the next moment, a gigantic hole appeared in the castle, piercing it from one side to the other.

The walls that could resist sieges for years in the castle were nothing before such a powerful magical attack.

Cadmus gradually stopped his acceleration and floated above the now ruined castle. On the wall, Mitra perched while cleaning her feathers with her beak, but her gaze was always on Cadmus, watching over him to protect him.

"Did you like my gift, little mouse?" Cadmus asked with an amused smile. "You were watching, and I thought we could have a pleasant fight. Oh, sorry, I thought you might be an interesting punching bag."

Seeing the silence in the ruins, Cadmus's smile grew. "Do you think you can hide and leave when I'm gone? Sorry to disappoint you, but I'll have to destroy this entire castle and bring you in for questioning, little mouse." He said with an interesting look.

Cadmus did not plan to kill the mage immediately; he wanted to know how such a powerful mage could ally with someone as poor as Balon IX Greyjoy. Although they were pirates and had some money, they were pirates; they spent everything they stole from merchant ships.

"It seems you don't want to surrender, but that's more interesting." Cadmus said with a smile. With a wave of his hand, a massive Maximus Protego formed around the castle. It was not a shield to protect against attacks from outside, but to prevent anything from getting out.

Cadmus landed on the ground gracefully and walked towards the castle, which had a huge hole in the middle. Looking at the damage from the spell, he murmured to himself. "Is this a new spell or a Fiendfyre variation? Both options are powerful."

Shaking his head, Cadmus put those thoughts aside and entered the castle with a smile on his lips. The huge wooden gates and the castle moat did not impede his entry at all. He seemed to be walking in his own garden.

The interior of the castle was empty, with no bodies or blood on the site, which was quite bizarre given the absurd number of guards and servants in the castle.

Cadmus touched the wall with his fingertips and narrowed his eyes; he could feel remnants of magic on the walls. Looking at the black particles on his finger, he smiled and murmured. "A shadow mage and necromancer? The little mouse is really a little mouse."

Now he understood why there was no life or bodies in the castle; obviously, the mage devoured all the bodies. Which, honestly, disappointed Cadmus. Devouring bodies might seem normal, but only madmen would do it.

The body is the boat of the soul. Devouring a body meant devouring part of someone's soul. Part of the soul that had memories and feelings. Now imagine devouring thousands of corpses at once, memories and feelings of thousands of people invading your mind, turning you into a schizophrenia patient.

Cadmus could imagine the mental state of the enemy mage, a man or woman hearing voices and seeing unreal things. A hostage within their own mind.

However, the enemy was a genius; Cadmus had no doubts about that. Although the magic system of this world was quite suitable for people with little talent who specialized in only one branch of magic, a genius could still choose multiple branches of magic to train.

The mage he was facing used at least two different types of magic, which made him better than mediocre mages.

Cadmus continued down the castle corridors. The entire place was silent, only his footsteps echoing in the long corridor. From time to time, the sound of falling stones could be heard far away; the hole he had made was starting to take its toll on the castle's structure.

The Royal Mage finally felt a weak wave of magic behind him and smiled. Moving his body to the side, he saw a shadow spear passing a few centimeters from his cheek. Cadmus continued to move his body from side to side as he dodged the enemy's relentless attacks.

Turning around, Cadmus saw the attacker's appearance; it was a monster made of shadows. The features could be faintly discerned, but not much; it looked blurred as if it were a poorly drawn picture by a small child.

"What a cruel method, using a fetus still in development to create a Shadow Child." Cadmus murmured with a look of pity, looking at the shadow before him. He could understand why people had demonic impressions of mages; these methods were truly cruel and inhuman.

At the same time, Cadmus also knew the mage's identity. "A shadowbinder from Asshai."

"However, it's a good assassin against common people and other inexperienced mages, but you chose the wrong opponent." Cadmus raised his hand, and several Lumos spells appeared next to his body. The spell molded itself to Cadmus's will and transformed into blades of light.

With a quick movement of his hand, the blades of light advanced extremely fast and pierced the Shadow Child, impaling it against the wall. The Shadow roared painfully, but before the blades of light, resistance was useless.

"That's the biggest flaw of specializing in only one branch of magic; every element has weaknesses." Cadmus murmured, watching the Shadow Child disappear forever from this world.

"Since you attacked me, it means I'm close." Looking at the corridor before him, Cadmus laughed and started walking again, disappearing into the shadows.
