"It wasn't suicide," Marcus said. "The mastermind just killed him to send a message. He can reach people anywhere, even in your custody."
"We're investigating that possibility," Clarke said. "But Mr. Thorne, I need to ask: did you receive any communication from the mastermind today?"
"Yes. A phone call about thirty minutes ago. He threatened to kill twenty people if Lawrence continues cooperating."
"We need to trace that call," Clarke said. "Send me the exact time and any details you remember about the number."
"It was blocked," Marcus said. "Viktor can send you the metadata, but I guarantee it won't trace to anything useful."
"Send it anyway." Clarke paused. "Mr. Thorne, we're increasing security on all individuals Lawrence identified. We're also requesting protective custody for anyone we think might be at risk. But if the mastermind really can reach people in federal detention, we have a serious problem."
