In the middle of the night, when Isabel entered the kitchen to get a drink of water, she saw Nathan and Serene still there. The kitchen was still brightly lit.
"Aren't you sleeping?" asked Isabel. She walked slowly, as usual, toward the table, which was now a mess.
Nathan was still busy carefully spreading chocolate cream on the round cake in front of him.
Serene smiled at Isabel. "Look, Isabel, he's making a cake for Master Roger," she said.
"I just made him a cake I used to make at the orphanage, so he can taste our cake," replied Nathan.
He really hated his birthday, which he had believed in all this time, only to find out it wasn't his real date of birth. But he often made cakes and helped Lara make them for the other children.
For them, birthday celebrations were truly a luxury, and Lara made sure the children got that moment amid their simplicity. Somehow, they always managed to make cakes.
