Ch 27
The deployment portal to Xylos-9 did not hum; it shrieked like a dying engine.
Dev stepped through the swirling crimson tear into a nightmare of black glass and toxic, ash-choked air. The sky above Xylos-9 was a bruised, violet abyss, pierced only by the jagged silhouette of the Crimson Hand Black-Site—a massive, hexagonal fortress of reinforced titanium and dark obsidian built directly into the side of an active volcanic caldera.
Selina's voice echoed in his mind from the briefing: *"This is a heist. Infiltrate. Retrieve Agent Vex. Do not engage the main garrison."*
Dev stood on the obsidian ridge overlooking the fortress, his long, 6-foot frame silhouetted against the toxic lightning. He ignored the advice completely.
Stealth was for the weak. Stealth was for those who feared consequences.
His [SPI: 39] [Spatial Awareness] expanded in a sweeping, high-fidelity sphere, cutting through three miles of solid rock and thick armor plating. The data flooded his cold, humming mind in a fraction of a second:
[FACILITY: CRIMSON HAND BLACK-SITE PRISON]
[DEFENSES: 14 AUTOMATED ETHER-TURRETS, 80+ GUARDS (LVL 4-6)]
[PRIMARY TARGET: AGENT VEX (STATUS: DETAINED, BLOCK 4)]
[HIGH-VALUE HOSTILE: WARDEN KRAVEN (LEVEL 8 BOSS, SECTOR 1)]
"A heist," Dev whispered, his voice a dead, cold breath lost in the howling ash-wind. "Inconvenient."
He didn't crawl through ventilation shafts. He didn't hack security protocols. He walked straight down the open obsidian causeway toward the massive, blast-shielded outer gates of the prison.
Fifty yards from the entrance, the automated defense grid pinged him. Four massive, shoulder-mounted Ether-Turrets pivoted on magnetic rails, their barrels glowing with superheated plasma.
[WARNING: TARGET LOCKED. INITIATING TERMINATION PROTOCOL.]
Dev didn't even draw his [Ebonguard Initiate's Sword]. He raised his right hand.
He activated [Eternal Bond].
A black-and-gold tear in reality ripped open behind him, twenty feet wide. The air around the causeway turned ice-cold as the four-dimensional void of his [Soul Space] touched the physical world.
"Clear the path," Dev commanded mentally.
Out of the portal surged a tide of absolute violence.
The 32 "Chaff" monsters—Ash Ghouls shrieking with unnatural, jerky speed and Magma Skitterers clicking their lava-carapaces—poured onto the causeway like a river of nightmare. Directly behind them, the ground shuddered as two ten-foot-tall Lava Hulks stepped into the light. The Level 3 golems, glowing with molten core-light, let out a twin roar that shook the very foundation of the volcanic ridge.
The Ether-Turrets fired. Plasma bolts rained down, vaporizing three Ash Ghouls instantly.
It didn't matter. The horde surged forward. The Lava Hulks charged, taking the brunt of the heavy artillery on their thick obsidian armor. One Hulk leaped twenty feet into the air, its massive, two-ton magma-fist crashing directly into the primary turret battery.
CRASH.
Metal twisted, sparks erupted, and the defense grid went dark in a flurry of explosions.
Dev walked through the burning wreckage, his boots clicking softly on the glass-sharp ground. His monsters moved ahead of him, a vanguard of elemental destruction tearing through the outer defenses.
The massive, six-inch-thick titanium blast doors stood between him and the prison interior.
"Break it," Dev ordered.
The two Lava Hulks slammed their fists into the center seam of the blast doors. The metal groaned, buckled, and then violently tore free from its hinges, falling inward with a deafening, metallic thunder that echoed through every corridor of the fortress.
Alarm sirens blared. Red emergency lights bathed the dark, metallic hallways in a rhythmic, blood-red pulse.
[ALERT: BREACH AT SECTOR 0. ALL UNITS DEPLOY.]
Dozens of Crimson Hand guards, clad in heavy, red-and-black powered armor and wielding serrated energy blades, flooded the hallway. They expected a rival Faction strike team. They expected an army.
Instead, they met a nightmare.
Dev's Ash Ghouls leaped onto the front ranks, claws tearing through visor seams and throat guards. Magma Skitterers swarmed up legs, burning through armored boots with raw, melting heat. The narrow corridors became a slaughterhouse. Screams, the smell of burning flesh, and the chaotic discharge of energy rifles filled the air.
Dev moved through the slaughter with effortless, terrifying calm.
His [AGI: 11] and [SPI: 39] made the chaotic firefight look like a frozen tableau. He didn't waste energy fighting low-level trash. When a guard broke through the monster line and lunged at him with an energy spear, Dev simply sidestepped by half an inch, caught the man's armored wrist, and crushed it with a single, casual [STR: 11] squeeze.
CRACK.
The guard shrieked, dropping the weapon. Dev shoved him backward into the maw of an advancing Lava Hulk, not even looking back as the man was pulverized against the steel wall.
He descended deeper into the facility. Sector 1. Sector 2. Sector 3.
Every automated door was shattered by his Hulks. Every guard unit was swallowed by his endless swarm. He was an unstoppable, singular force tearing through a military fortress like paper.
He reached Cell Block 4—the Deep Isolation Core.
The heavy, magic-dampening reinforced door to the isolation chamber was pitted with frost and arcane runes. Dev casually raised his hand, gesturing to his Lava Hulk. The monster smashed the control console, short-circuiting the door's locking mechanism. The heavy steel slid open with a heavy hiss.
Inside, suspended in mid-air by glowing, blue anti-ether chains, was Agent Vex.
She looked exactly like her dossier. Pale skin, sharply pointed ears, and short, jagged white hair. Her skin-tight black-and-silver stealth suit was torn in several places, caked with dried blood. But despite the heavy anti-magic chains binding her arms and legs, her sharp, intelligent eyes were bright, and a bitter, arrogant smirk still rested on her lips.
She looked up as the door shattered, expecting her torturers.
Instead, she saw a 6-foot, broad-shouldered young man in a torn school jacket walking casually into the cell, surrounded by a swirling mist of black-and-gold energy. Beyond the doorway, the hallway was a hellscape of burning bodies, screeching demons, and dripping blood.
Vex blinked, her arrogant smirk faltering for a microsecond.
"What..." she rasped, her voice dry and hoarse from days of detention. "What the hell is this? Where is the extraction team?"
Dev walked up to the central containment pedestal, his cold, [SPI: 39] eyes scanning her.
[TARGET: AGENT VEX]
[STATUS: SEVERELY DRAINED, UNARMED, BOUND]
[THREAT LEVEL: 0 (CURRENTLY)]
"I am the extraction team," Dev said, his voice flat, devoid of any warmth or theatricality.
Vex stared at him, her eyes flicking from his face to the massive Lava Hulk standing guard in the doorway, its molten eyes fixed on the corridor.
"You're... an Initiate?" she whispered, trying to process the impossible visual data. "No... Faction Initiates don't command elemental constructs. Who are you? Did command send a rogue Necromancer?"
"You talk too much," Dev said.
He reached out, grabbing the glowing anti-ether chain binding her right wrist. The arcane runes flared violently, attempting to shock his soul-form with anti-magic feedback.
Dev's [RES: 33] didn't even flicker. The energy hit his hand and fizzled like rain on hot iron. With a casual [STR: 11] flex, he squeezed the reinforced steel link.
SNAP.
The chain shattered into useless, sparkling fragments. Vex dropped slightly, her left arm and legs still bound, her jaw open in pure, unadulterated shock. She was an Infiltrator class—she knew the exact structural density of Faction-grade containment chains. Breaking them required heavy plasma cutters or Level 10 physical stats.
He smashed the remaining three chains with effortless, rhythmic snaps.
Vex collapsed to her knees on the cold metal floor, coughing, her weakened body struggling to adjust to the sudden release of etheric pressure.
"You... you're insane," she breathed, looking up at him through her jagged white bangs. "They have a Level 8 Warden here. Kraven. He has a full squad of elite guards and—"
"I know," Dev interrupted, turning his back on her.
Heavy, booming footsteps echoed down the corridor outside. The temperature in the hallway spiked dramatically.
Slowly, deliberately, a massive figure stepped through the wreckage of the outer doorway, stepping over the crushed body of a Lava Hulk that had been dismantled in the hallway.
It was Warden Kraven.
He was a mountain of a man, over seven feet tall, clad in heavy, spiked red-and-gold battle armor that pulsed with a dark, violent aura. In his massive, gauntleted hands, he carried a double-headed warhammer, its iron heads dripping with liquid plasma. His face was covered by a horned helmet, but his glowing, yellow eyes burned with pure rage through the visor slits.
[WARNING: HIGH-VALUE HOSTILE DETECTED]
[NAME: WARDEN KRAVEN (LEVEL 8 BOSS)]
[STATS: STR 28, CON 25, AGI 14, SPI 12]
Kraven looked at the slaughtered guards littering the floor. He looked at the single remaining Lava Hulk. Finally, his glowing eyes locked onto Dev.
"An Ebonguard dreg," Kraven rumbled, his voice like grinding tectonic plates. "You tore apart my facility... with low-tier summon trash?"
He raised his glowing warhammer, pointing it directly at Dev's chest.
"I will turn your soul into ash, little worm."
Vex scrambled back against the cell wall, her face pale. "Dev—or whatever your name is—get back! Kraven is a pure Strength and Constitution build! His warhammer has an area-of-effect stun—"
Dev didn't move. He didn't draw his sword. He didn't retreat.
He looked at Kraven's stats.
[STR: 28] [CON: 25] [AGI: 14] [SPI: 12]
A blunt instrument. A wall of meat and iron. High physical stats, pathetic spiritual stats. A beast that relied on brute force to crush weaker opponents.
"Annoying," Dev said softly.
Kraven exploded into motion.
For a man of his massive size, his [AGI: 14] carried him across the containment room in a fraction of a second. He raised the massive warhammer high, the plasma heads screaming as they gathered kinetic and etheric energy for a strike meant to shatter the entire floor block.
[SKILL ACTIVATED: EARTH-BREAKER IMPACT]
To Vex, Kraven was a blur of lethal crimson light.
To Dev's [SPI: 39] and [AGI: 11] processing, Kraven was a slow, clumsy equation.
Dev didn't try to block the strike. He didn't test his [CON: 10] against a [STR: 28] blow. That was how fools died.
As the massive warhammer descended, Dev moved. A single, fluid, economical step to the left. The whistling plasma blade missed his shoulder by less than a millimeter, the superheated air singeing the fabric of his jacket.
THOOM!
The warhammer slammed into the reinforced floor. The entire cell block shuddered. A crater of shattered steel and explosive shockwaves radiated outward, blasting Vex against the back wall and sending metal shrapnel flying in every direction.
Kraven's attack was devasting. But it had momentum. It had recovery time.
And Kraven's [SPI: 12] meant his mental reaction speed was pitiful.
Before Kraven could pull the heavy hammer out of the crater he had just created, Dev was already inside his guard.
Dev drew his [Ebonguard Initiate's Sword]—the matte-black, leaf-shaped blade humming with his own dense energy.
He didn't target Kraven's thick chest plate. He didn't strike the heavy neck guard.
His [SPI: 39] [Spatial Awareness] had already identified the structural weak point in Kraven's armor: the joint beneath the left armpit, where the hydraulic servo wires were exposed to allow arm mobility.
SHING.
Dev thrust the black blade straight upward through the servo joint, plunging the steel four inches deep into Kraven's side, right into the gap between his ribs.
Kraven let out a guttural roar of shock and pain, his posture faltering. He instinctively let go of his hammer, bringing his massive, armored fist around in a blinding backhand aimed to crush Dev's head.
Dev didn't dodge back. He let go of his sword hilt, ducked beneath the massive fist, and slammed his own palm directly into Kraven's exposed visor.
He activated his EX-Trait: "Hunger for Strength."
It wasn't a physical punch. It was a psychic spike.
Dev's massive [SPI: 39] mental force erupted directly into Kraven's weak [SPI: 12] mind. The shockwave of pure, predatory willpower hit Kraven's brain like a sledgehammer hitting glass.
Kraven froze. His yellow eyes behind the visor dilated, his mind completely paralyzed by the sudden, overwhelming mental assault.
"My turn," Dev whispered.
Dev reached out, grabbing Kraven's horned helmet with both hands. He planted his boot firmly against Kraven's chest plate.
With every ounce of his 10% Synced [STR: 11] and the momentum of his body, Dev twisted and pulled.
CRUNCH. HYDRAULIC POP.
The heavy neck servos shattered. The reinforced steel neck guard tore free.
With a sickening, metallic tear, Dev ripped Kraven's helmet off, exposing the bloody, dazed face of the Level 8 Commander beneath.
Kraven, his mind still reeling from the mental stun, coughed blood, looking at Dev with sudden, terrifying realization. "What... what are you...?"
Dev grabbed the hilt of his black sword, still buried in Kraven's side, and yanked it sideways, tearing open a massive, gaping wound across Kraven's torso.
Blood spilled onto the cold metal floor. Kraven collapsed to his knees, his massive frame shivering, his life-force draining fast.
Dev stood over him, his sword held low, dripping red. His face was completely devoid of emotion.
"A new master," Dev said.
He drove the black blade straight down through Kraven's collarbone, piercing his heart.
Kraven's eyes went wide, then slowly rolled back into his head. His massive body fell forward, slamming onto the floor with a final, heavy clang.
[KILL CONFIRMED: LEVEL 8 CRIMSON HAND COMMANDER 'WARDEN KRAVEN']
[MASSIVE SOUL-ESSENCE ACQUIRED: +2,200]
[NEXUS SHARDS ACQUIRED: +450]
Silence fell over the cell block. The alarms continued to blare in the distance, but inside Cell Block 4, the only sound was the low sizzle of blood on warm metal and the heavy breathing of Agent Vex.
Vex sat on the floor, her back pressed against the cold wall, staring at the corpse of the Level 8 Boss.
A solo kill. Executed in less than twenty seconds. By an "Initiate."
"You... you killed him," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly, her arrogant facade completely shattered. "You didn't just bypass him... you executed him..."
Dev didn't answer her. He was looking at the fading, spiritual remnant rising from Kraven's corpse.
A familiar black-and-gold prompt flared in his vision:
[...FADING SOUL (LVL 8 COMMANDER) DETECTED...]
[...DO YOU WISH TO 'ENSLAVE'? Y/N]
Dev willed 'Y'.
His "Hunger for Strength" erupted from his core. Black-and-gold energy flared around Kraven's body, wrapping around the floating Level 8 soul like a net of barbed wire. The spirit struggled for a microsecond before it was violently yanked into the air and pulled directly into Dev's palm, disappearing into his [Soul Space].
[SOUL SPACE (TIER 1) UPDATED:]
[...SLAVES (33): LV. 0-2 (CHAFF)]
[...SLAVES (2): LV. 3 (HULK)]
[...SLAVES (1): LV. 8 (WARDEN KRAVEN)]
A Level 8 Boss was now his personal puppet.
Dev turned to look at Vex.
She flinched as his cold, analytical [SPI: 39] eyes pinned her to the wall. For the first time in her life, the arrogant, reckless Infiltrator felt genuine, primal terror. She was looking at a monster disguised in human skin—a being that didn't just kill its enemies, but consumed their very souls to build an army.
"Can you walk?" Dev asked, his voice cold and flat.
Vex swallowed hard, forcing herself to stand on trembling legs, holding onto the wall for support. "I... I can move."
"Good," Dev said, walking past her toward the exit. "We're leaving."
He gave a single, mental command to his legion.
The remaining Ash Ghouls, Magma Skitterers, and the surviving Lava Hulk immediately turned in unison, dissolving into black-and-gold smoke that was sucked back into Dev's shadow. The terrifying horde vanished as if it had never existed, leaving only the blood and destruction behind.
Dev walked down the ruined corridor. Vex followed a few paces behind, keeping her distance, her eyes fixed on his back with a mixture of profound awe and deep, inescapable fear.
He brought up his Faction interface.
[OBJECTIVE: RESCUE AGENT VEX — COMPLETE]
[INITIATING FACTION RECALL PORTAL...]
A brilliant, silver-and-black Ebonguard recall portal tore open in the middle of the burning hallway.
Dev stepped up to the portal's edge and paused, looking back over his shoulder at the ruined fortress of Xylos-9.
His [SPI: 39] mind was already calculating his next move. He had a Level 8 Commander in his legion. He had over 2,000 Soul-Essence ready to allocate. And he had a "day life" in West Delhi that needed his immediate attention.
"Move," Dev ordered Vex without looking back.
Vex hurried forward, stepping into the portal alongside him.
The silver light flashed, consuming them both, leaving the slaughtered Black-Site of Xylos-9 behind in absolute, burning ruin.
