Maria turned up the volume of the radio, the loud beat of the music filling the space.
"Little Esme doesn't need to hear what comes next," Maria stated.
"Why?" I asked fearlessly. "Why are you doing this?"
This wouldn't be the first time a hitman came for me, but I'm more terrified for Esme's sake. Maria may have claimed she wouldn't hurt her, but I'll be damned if I believe a word she says.
Maria clearly wasn't the jovial slutty mouthed girl I knew all this time.
"Lemme guess, the pay wasn't good enough for you?" I added. "Killing your boss is far-fetched for something like that... there are other ways to get your voice heard."
She scoffed. "Trust me, the pay was decent, and you're possibly the best boss there is…"
"Then, why…? You come into my diner and threaten me for what reason? You're making a mistake."
"Is that a warning? You're in no position to do that…" She raised her knife. "Begging for your life is what I was truly looking forward to."
