Emily's POV
Time seemed to slow and speed up simultaneously. I noticed Dr. Griffin's shocked expression, Victor's wide eyes, the way my own heart had stopped beating in my chest.
"Did you hear that?" I gasped out, already moving toward the door.
"Yes," Victor said, his exhaustion forgotten, his face draining of color. "Go. Go now."
I ran.
My feet pounded down the hallway, my breath coming in sharp gasps. I could still hear Mary screaming, the sound getting louder as I approached Mom's room.
Jenkins burst out of a side corridor, nearly colliding with me. His face pale.
"Mrs. Hawthorne..."
I didn't stop, didn't slow down. I shoved past him and flung open Mom's door.
The scene that greeted me would haunt my nightmares forever.
Mom was on the floor beside her bed, her body convulsing violently. Her eyes had rolled back in her head, showing only whites. Foam gathered at the corners of her mouth. Her limbs jerked and spasmed with terrifying force, completely beyond her control.
