Emily's POV
The email from Victor had been brief and businesslike, arriving at seven in the morning on my phone:
Emily, I need you to check the left drawer of my desk. There's a document, a contract with Meridian Properties. Please photograph it and send it to me as soon as possible. I need it for tomorrow's meeting. Thank you. - V
Simple. Practical. Urgent. Nothing that should have made my heart skip the way it did seeing his name on my screen.
I stood outside his study now, nine days into his absence, my hand hovering over the doorknob. The room had been locked since he left, the key hanging in Jenkins's office. Even the butler had only entered once, to leave the stack of mail that had arrived for Victor.
Entering it without him felt strangely intimate, like stepping into his mind without permission.
He asked you to do this, I reminded myself, turning the handle.
