Chapter 667: The War of the Gods
Diana Meets Her Sister
In the western part of the Plain of White Bones, the ground covered with bone flowers cracked open. Over a dozen tentacles burst out, towering against the sky.
The moment she saw them, Diana instinctively drew her sword. J'onn said in a low voice,
"It's them. The one who messaged me earlier is among them."
"Why are they here?" Clark asked.
"Maybe they're here to help."
Despite the suggestion, Clark remained tense and on high alert.
The Death Gods chasing them stopped in the distance, their expressions grave as they looked at the newcomers. Over a dozen tentacles, with a human figure at the tip of each. The leader was Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt and one of the Twelve Olympians.
There was a statue of Artemis in the temple on Themyscira. Every year on God-day, Diana would visit the temple to worship the Gods. Thus, the sight of Artemis raised a deep sense of bewilderment.
How could this half-bodied woman look exactly like the sculpture?
Artemis writhed her body and stopped in front of Diana. She looked at the Sword of Hephaestus, then the Star-Light Diadem, the Lasso of Truth, and finally fixed her gaze on the Silver Bracelets of Submission.
"Who gave you these artifacts?"
Diana frowned. "You are..."
"Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt of Mount Olympus."
Diana was stunned. The Goddess of the Hunt? This wild-eyed woman, naked from the waist up, was actually Artemis?
"You... weren't you killed?"
"I was resurrected, although the method is somewhat ugly. Tell me, who gave you the Sword of Hephaestus, the Lasso of Truth, and the Silver Bracelets of Submission?"
"Zeus," Diana said with a hint of resignation. "He is my father."
"And your mother is Hippolyta, the Amazon Queen."
Diana nodded awkwardly. Artemis curled her lips, a mixture of mockery, helplessness, and disdain in her expression.
"Hide behind us when the fighting starts. Also, you should call me Sister."
Diana was speechless, filled with a sense of mortification.
Honestly, she didn't like Zeus at all, even feeling repelled by him, but his blood flowed in her veins. By blood relation, Artemis, also Zeus's offspring, was indeed her sister.
Gods Clash
The great battle began.
A jade-green spear appeared in Artemis's left hand, and a massive bow made of tree branches appeared in her right. She used the spear as an arrow, drawing the bowstring.
Bang!
The air shook violently. The spear ripped through the air, carrying a massive green tornado that swept across the land, shooting toward the enemies with devastating ferocity.
At the same time, the ground cracked, and the tentacles waiting in ambush below launched a surprise attack. A Witchcraft God wearing a necklace of bones chanted a curse, then plunged a dagger into their own heart.
Pfft!
Blood spurted out. A Death God, who was on guard, suddenly screamed in agony. A hole appeared in its chest, and black blood gushed out.
"A curse?"
A nearby comrade gave the Witchcraft God below a cold look, then drew a short blade and stabbed himself in the chest as well.
Ah!
The Witchcraft God shrieked, his body shaking violently. Black vertical stripes surfaced on his skin, like countless writhing insects.
"You are not the only one who can cast curses in this world."
Before the words fully registered, a sonic boom exploded. A tangible sound wave assaulted them from below, vast and overwhelming, sweeping across the eight Death Gods present like a flood.
The sonic impact hit every one of them, nearly shattering their internal organs.
Suddenly, a terrifying giant monster, enveloped in black mist, materialized in the air. The beast opened its huge mouth and swallowed all the Death Gods. Its body turned into black mist, pierced through the sound wave attack, and ascended to a higher altitude.
The mist dissipated, reforming into the monster, which then spat out the Death Gods from its belly.
The True Cost of War
The fighting continued in an exaggerated fashion.
Clark and his team, however, lost all desire to join. They stood at the edge of the battlefield, staring blankly ahead, their eyes filled with shock.
Is this what a battle between Gods looks like?
Storms, sonic tides, curses, thunder... at best, they created dust and flying rocks; at worst, they brought about world-ending destruction.
No wonder the God-Demon Battlefield turned out the way it did. The power of the Gods was simply too destructive.
Clark hesitated. "Luke said they turned into tentacles because they want to go back to Earth."
"That's what he said," J'onn confirmed.
Clark fell silent, finally saying after a long moment,
"They shouldn't go back."
Diana remained silent. She agreed with Clark. The problem was that the Gods didn't see it that way. Earth was the home of humanity, but it was also the home of the Gods. They couldn't be stopped from going home merely on the charge of potential danger.
J'onn interjected, "To the current Earth, they are a disaster, a calamity that would engulf the entire civilization."
Diana gave a bitter smile. "This is not something we can stop."
"What about Luke? He must realize this."
Diana shook her head. "I don't know what he's thinking. But he must have made some preparations."
"I hope so!"
J'onn sighed. If there were only a dozen Gods, the four of them could nip the danger in the bud. The problem was that there were over a hundred of them.
Over a hundred Gods, with bizarre and wondrous abilities.
If it came down to a fight, they had no chance of winning.
Dom's Power and Luke's Strategy
The battles at both locations began simultaneously. Without a doubt, the tentacle monsters, who had a numerical advantage and had prepared an ambush, were in a superior position. The only problem was Dom.
Dom, the leader of the Underworld forces during the War of the Gods, a legendary powerhouse with a lifespan of over a million years.
His power was awe-inspiring. Any attack was easily neutralized. Elemental attacks had no effect, physical attacks were even less effective, and the effects of soul and psychic attacks were minimal. Even curses were blocked.
Dom charged through the battlefield like a God of War. Wherever he went, no one dared to meet his edge. Only the Moon God (Hanyue) and the Feathered Serpent King from the Mesoamerican Mayan pantheon could stand against him directly.
After saving Hanyue, Luke retreated to the edge of the battlefield, his eyes scanning the surroundings, carefully observing the situation.
Seventy-eight Human Gods were participating in the fight. They had a clear numerical advantage, but due to the state of their bodies, they couldn't defeat their opponents quickly.
The presence of the tentacles severely restricted their movement; many attacks had to be endured since they couldn't dodge. If the tentacles didn't have self-healing capabilities, the battle would have already become one-sided.
"Human, why are you not fighting?"
A body composed of bones drilled out of the ground. Its empty eye sockets stared fixedly at Luke.
"Use your Soul-Devouring Bow to slay the Evil Gods! Eliminate them, and I will take you back to the mortal world."
Luke ignored the latter part of the statement, raised his long bow, and asked with feigned curiosity, "The Soul-Devouring Bow. You know its origin?"
"Don't change the subject! Pick up your weapon and attack the enemy, or you will be considered an enemy of ours!"
Luke scoffed. "I don't even know who you are. Why should I listen to you?"
"Human, this is your last chance."
With that, the body sank back into the dirt and disappeared.
