Mira's POV
Ayla what the hell I snapped turning to her fully Are you in trouble
She didn't answer right away
Instead she looked away out the window into the night like if she stared hard enough she could outrun whatever was chasing her
Then in a voice barely louder than a whisper she said
Mira this is bigger than what you think Just drive When we get home we'll talk
That wasn't good enough
Not even close to ease my mind
But I turned back to the road anyway jaw clenched fingers curling tight around the steering wheel
I wanted to speed up
To get us home as fast as possible
To get answers
To pull her closer and shake the truth out of her gently if I could desperately if I had to
To find a solution to whatever had reduced her to this quiet guarded version of herself
No speeding she added sharply
And I obeyed like a scolded child
Because even in chaos her voice still had that kind of grip on me
Still I pushed the car forward with quiet urgency
Not speeding
