Elena's POV
The moment I saw her get into that car, someone else opening the door for her and helping her in so gently, it felt like the night swallowed my breath.
I could not see the face of whoever was inside the car. I could not even tell if it was a man or a woman, and that alone made the anger rise sharper in my chest.
But I was very sure it had to be the person she had called moments ago.
My chest tightened, and for a second, it felt like my heart just paused.
It was the kind of pause that hits when reality sinks in, when you realize you were never the one. The kind of pause that creeps in just when you thought something was finally shifting, only to realize that shift might have been nothing more than a detour made by mistake.
So I muttered, fingers dragging over my lips like I could still feel hers there.
That kiss was just a mistake on her side?
The words tasted bitter.
