"Spare me, great one! Please spare me!"
A small, childlike phantom hovered before Luo Yu, its hair tied into twin topknots, wearing a green-patterned bellyband. It trembled as it begged for mercy.
Luo Yu wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth—blood drawn from forcibly wielding a spirit treasure beyond his limits. His gaze shifted from the now-still great bell to the strange little spirit before him.
Pointing the Soul-Calming Hammer at it, he said coldly,"Answer whatever I ask. Lie to me, or—"
"I'll tell you! I'll tell you everything!" the little spirit cried in panic.
So it was a coward. Good. That made things easier.
Luo Yu frowned. "Who are you?"
"I—I am the artifact spirit of this ancient bell."
"What bell?"
The little spirit straightened slightly, pride flashing across its face."A super divine artifact—the Soul-Extinguishing Bell."
"Super divine artifact?"
Luo Yu's pupils contracted.
As far as he knew, even in the God Realm, super divine artifacts were exceedingly rare. Only weapons like the Sea God's Trident or the Asura God's Sword qualified. The Abyssal Plane supposedly possessed one as well—the Heaven-Splitting Abyss Halberd wielded by the Abyss Saint Lord.
As for gods like the Rakshasa God or the Angel God, their weapons were merely divine artifacts—one tier lower.
Seeing Luo Yu's doubt, the artifact spirit shouted,"Don't underestimate me! If not for the lack of a master to activate me, the things you're holding wouldn't stand a chance!"
Clang!
The three spirit treasures around Luo Yu flared with light simultaneously, clearly offended.
The artifact spirit shuddered instantly and shrank back.
"If my treasures weren't damaged and reduced in power," Luo Yu said calmly,"you would've been erased with a single strike."
"That's impossible!" the spirit protested. "I'm a super divine artifact! There can't be anything stronger!"
"Enough nonsense," Luo Yu cut in."Where is this place, and why are you here?"
The spirit hesitated, then said,"This is where my master—the God of Death—rests. I remain here to guard him."
Luo Yu sneered."God of Death? Never heard of him. I only know the Rakshasa God and the Asura God."
The spirit erupted in anger."My master isn't comparable to trash like the Rakshasa God! He simply kept to himself in the God Realm, which is why his name wasn't well known!"
Luo Yu nodded thoughtfully."So in the end, still inferior to a God King. Otherwise, why avoid mentioning the Asura God?"
The spirit froze. "How do you know so much about the God Realm?"
"That's not exactly classified information."
The spirit gritted its teeth."My master may not rival the Asura God yet, but once his plan succeeds, even a God King will be insignificant!"
Luo Yu's eyes narrowed."So this isn't a place to select a successor—it's a hiding spot for scheming?"
The spirit's face went pale. It clamped its hands over its mouth, realizing it had said too much.
"I—I said nothing! Don't make wild guesses!"
Luo Yu casually swung the Soul-Calming Hammer."I don't have patience. Speak now, or you'll never return to that bell."
The spirit trembled violently but still clenched its teeth.
"What's stopping you?" Luo Yu asked coldly.
Tears welled in the spirit's eyes."If I tell you everything, my master will refine my soul when he returns. That's worse than annihilation."
"Your master… the God of Death?"
Instead of fear, a faint smile curled at Luo Yu's lips.
"Where is he? Call him out."
The spirit froze.
Luo Yu continued evenly,"He's not here anymore, is he?"
The spirit stared at him in disbelief."H-how did you know?"
Luo Yu relaxed, a calm smile appearing."Just as I suspected."
He had long suspected that the severed connection between the God Realm and the Douluo Continent meant the gods could no longer interfere directly.
And now, it was confirmed.
"You tricked me!" the spirit shouted.
"Hardly," Luo Yu replied."If he were still connected to this place, do you think he'd let me stroll in unhindered?"
The spirit went silent, clearly not the brightest existence.
"Explain everything," Luo Yu ordered.
After hesitating, the spirit said,"My master maintained contact with this place through the divine statue. If anything happened, he could descend here through it. But some time ago, all connection was suddenly severed."
Luo Yu felt a surge of relief.
Good thing that thing wasn't here—otherwise, today might have ended very badly.
"So," Luo Yu pressed,"what was he plotting?"
"Don't insult my master!" the spirit snapped.
Dong!
A golden shockwave rippled outward. The spirit's form became noticeably fainter.
"Spare me!!"
"Then talk."
This time, the spirit behaved."I don't know much. He never told me everything. I only know he was searching for a suitable physical body."
Luo Yu rolled his eyes.
Possession. Obviously.
But possession for what?
After further questioning yielded nothing useful, Luo Yu changed topics.
"How do we leave?"
The spirit hurried to the wall and slapped a protruding stone.
Rumble—
The black wall rotated, revealing a stone stairway leading upward.
"This leads outside!"
Luo Yu studied the spirit."You seem eager for me to leave."
The spirit nearly cried. With its master absent, letting a monster like this roam freely inside was suicidal—especially one who survived all the previous death traps.
Instead of leaving, Luo Yu turned his gaze to the bronze bell suspended by iron chains.
The spirit sensed danger."G-great one… what are you thinking?"
"A super divine artifact," Luo Yu mused."It can change size, right?"
"You can't take me!" the spirit panicked."When my master returns, you'll die!"
Luo Yu pointed at the statue."He needs that to descend, doesn't he?"
The spirit said nothing—but its eyes gave it away.
Without hesitation, Luo Yu hurled the Soul-Calming Hammer.
The statue glowed faintly in defense, but without conscious control, the barrier shattered instantly. The statue's head exploded.
"No!!!" the spirit screamed.
Luo Yu didn't stop.
A second strike obliterated the rest of the statue.
The spirit stood frozen in shock.
"Now," Luo Yu said calmly,"he shouldn't be coming down anytime soon."
"My master will never forgive you!" the spirit shouted weakly.
"That's a problem for the future," Luo Yu replied flatly."And even if I hadn't destroyed it, you'd definitely report me when he returned."
The spirit blinked."That… does make sense."
Luo Yu added quietly,"And if he learns you failed to protect the statue, do you think he'll spare you? Or replace you?"
Fear filled the spirit's eyes.
After a long pause, it flew back into the Soul-Extinguishing Bell.
Dong—
The bell rang, shattering the iron chains. The bronze bell spun in midair, shrinking rapidly until it became palm-sized, floating before Luo Yu.
"What does this mean?" Luo Yu asked.
A voice echoed from within the bell:"You're my master now. We're on the same rope!"
"Teachably quick," Luo Yu nodded.
He grabbed the bell, silently noting how much simpler artifact spirits were compared to humans—less experience, easier to manipulate.
"One more thing," Luo Yu asked."I met a strange woman above. Who was she?"
"A woman? I don't know," the spirit replied nervously."She might've been placed here after I was sealed away."
"You'd better not be lying."
"I swear! And—no—you are my master now. Not him!"
Luo Yu nodded and turned toward the exit.
"Master, wait," the spirit suddenly said."There's more treasure here."
