Chapter 72 - Chapter 72: Infernal Affairs in New Eridu

The command center for this arrest operation was set up inside a residential area, occupying several rooms in a building directly opposite the anticipated crime transaction site.

More than twenty people were involved in the operation. Aside from Inspector Huang, Zhu Yuan, Qingyi, and Arden, the rest were trusted officers Inspector Liu had brought over from the Throne Quarter Public Security Precinct.

There was also a representative from the Defense Force, since Brother Kun's transaction partner was suspected to be connected to rebel forces.

"Everyone, do your job properly. We must catch them red-handed!"

As the person in charge of the operation, Inspector Huang issued the orders.

More than twenty people immediately sprang into action. Those responsible for equipment began calibrating it, those assigned to tasks moved to execute them, those on surveillance quietly went undercover around the transaction site, and the arrest team stood by inside official vehicles.

The only one relatively idle at the scene was Arden. His task was to identify any potential moles, so all he needed to do was keep an eye on everyone else.

"Consultant Xu... is there something wrong with me?"

Qingyi noticed that Arden had been staring at her—more precisely, staring at her belly button—so she asked curiously.

"Uh... nothing. I was just a bit curious."

Arden awkwardly withdrew his gaze. He really was just curious—curious about the "charging port"—and had no other intentions.

"Oh."

Qingyi didn't pay it much mind, assuming Arden was simply curious about Intelligent Constructs.

Soon, the vehicle carrying Brother Kun and the Axe Gang's core members entered the surveillance range, and the operation officially began.

"Inspector Huang, which channel?"

The technician asked about the intercom frequency.

"45-48-70!"

Inspector Huang thought for a moment before giving the number. Immediately after, all personnel tuned their intercoms to that frequency.

"Attention, all units, attention—the trainee has arrived, the trainee has arrived!"

"Trainee" was Brother Kun's operation codename. The scout saying this meant that the vehicle carrying Brother Kun and the Axe Gang's main members had arrived in front of the transaction building.

Arden looked at the surveillance monitor and saw a short, chubby man with a wide grin stepping out of a black car. He wore a shirt with suspenders and was patting a basketball in his hand.

It was Brother Kun.

The overwhelming sense of déjà vu made the corner of Arden's mouth twitch.

Brother Kun had loved basketball since childhood. Although his height prevented him from becoming a professional player, he treated basketball as a lucky charm. Every time he conducted a deal, the basketball never left his side, and he would casually bounce it now and then.

Following Brother Kun out of the car were other key figures of the Axe Gang, including the undercover Jane Doe.

Thump! Thump!

The rhythmic sound of the basketball echoed as Brother Kun and his group entered the predetermined transaction site.

"Phones out."

With a wave of his hand, Brother Kun pointed at a table.

Naturally cautious by nature, this was a necessary security measure for him.

Those following him took out their phones and tossed them onto the table. Jane Doe did the same.

Then Brother Kun took out a brand-new phone and handed it to the subordinate responsible for receiving the goods. He then looked at Jane Doe and gave his instruction.

"Little Jane, go bring the army guys over."

The so-called "army guys" were the transaction partners this time.

Beep beep—!

At that moment, Brother Kun's phone rang.

He took it out and glanced at the screen. It was a message.

The message contained six digits—45-48-70!

Clearly, a mole within the Public Security forces had already learned the operation's communication frequency and had notified Brother Kun through some means.

"Heh..."

Brother Kun let out a light chuckle, seemingly not taking the officers trying to arrest him seriously at all.

At the operation command center—

"Inspector Liu, have Brother Kun or his subordinates made any calls?"

Inspector Huang asked for an update.

"No!"

Inspector Liu lifted her head from the equipment screen. "They probably switched phones."

She didn't dwell on it. This wasn't her first time participating in Brother Kun's arrest—he replaced his subordinates' phones every time.

"Try randomly scanning outgoing calls in this area," Inspector Huang suggested.

"I'll try..."

Inspector Liu began operating, and results came quickly. "There are over six thousand five hundred active phones in this area right now. Just the East Street base station alone has two hundred sixty-seven calls in use."

Inspector Huang showed a disappointed expression.

With numbers like that, it was nearly impossible to identify which signal belonged to Brother Kun and his people.

Looks like we still have to rely on the undercover agent.

"The basketball is here!"

After a short while, Inspector Huang gave another reminder.

Since Brother Kun's codename was "Trainee," the rebel buyers' codename was naturally "Basketball."

Under the camera surveillance, Jane Doe led a group of people into the transaction building.

Inside the transaction room—

Creak~~

The door was pushed open as Jane Doe brought the group inside.

"Brother Kun, the army guys are here."

As she finished speaking, Jane Doe stepped aside.

"Ahahaha!!"

"Hello!"

Having done business many times before, the burly leader of the army guys was very familiar with Brother Kun. The moment they met, the two enthusiastically embraced.

After a round of pleasantries, it was time for the inspection.

Jane Doe, responsible for checking the goods, took a cigarette, snapped it open, and poured out some violet-blue powder.

Then she lowered her head and inhaled a small amount of the powder through her nose.

At that moment, both sides stopped talking and watched Jane Doe. The surrounding lackeys subconsciously placed their hands on their weapons.

The atmosphere grew tense.

"Hiss~~ ha~~!"

Jane Doe first showed an expression of enjoyment, then looked at Brother Kun and gave her professional evaluation of the batch.

"AA+!"

Just a tiny step below the highest 3A rating—this was an extremely high appraisal.

At the same time, Jane Doe gave Brother Kun a thumbs-up.

"Ahahaha!!"

"Deal."

The two sides embraced again, even more warmly than before.

After some further discussion, Brother Kun made a call, notifying the subordinates responsible for picking up the goods that they could proceed.

The command center received this information as well.

"Inspector Huang, should we dispatch vehicles to tail them?" Inspector Liu asked.

Inspector Huang waved his hand, signaling her not to rush. He closed his eyes, waiting for information from Jane Doe.

About a minute later, Inspector Huang suddenly opened his eyes.

He picked up the intercom.

"Phoenix, Port Elpis, Pier Number Three!"

Phoenix was Zhu Yuan's codename. She and the squad led by Qingyi were responsible for intercepting the goods—this was the core of the entire operation. That was why Inspector Huang entrusted it to the person he trusted most.

However, just as Zhu Yuan received the message and began heading toward Port Elpis Pier Three, Brother Kun also got word.

He first called the subordinate in charge of receiving the goods to warn them that someone was tailing them. Then he scanned the people in the room, as if trying to identify the hidden mole.
